In short

The 4th lord in the 9th house places the ruler of home, mother, land and vehicles in the strongest trine, the house of fortune and religion. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 45 is wholly favourable: dear to all, devout, virtuous, honoured, with every kind of happiness. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 4th lord also owns the 9th and is the chart's yogakaraka, sitting in its own sign there.

What the placement means

The 4th house lord rules home, mother, lands, vehicles and contentment. In the 9th house it sits in the house of fortune, religion, teachers, pilgrimage and, in BPHS, the father. The comforts of home are placed in the house of grace and dharma.

The 4th is a Kendra and the 9th the strongest trikona, so this is an angle lord in a trine, a yoga-forming relation in BPHS Ch. 34. The 9th is also the 6th counted from the 4th; BPHS does not use that counting here, and its verse is entirely favourable.

The two houses involved

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) is conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5.

The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is fortunes, the wife's brother, religion, the brother's wife and visits to shrines in Ch. 11 Sl. 10. The house pages develop both.

What BPHS says about the 4th lord in the 9th

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 45 says that with the 4th lord in the 9th the native "will be dear to one and all, be devoted to God, be virtuous, honourable", and endowed with every kind of happiness. bphs-alt.txt has the same text. (The translation prints "every land of happiness", which reads as a misprint for "kind"; the same slip appears in Sl. 34.)

The verse carries the 9th's religion and fortune and the 4th's happiness, with no qualification. It closely resembles Sl. 41 (the 4th lord in the 5th), the other trine: both read the 4th lord in a trine as popularity, devotion, virtue and honour. The religious clause is reported as part of the text, with no statement about any reader's faith.

BPHS supports it from the lordship side. Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 says an angle lord in a trine causes a yoga and the native becomes famous; Sl. 13 calls a planet owning both an angle and a trine specially a yogakaraka; Sl. 15 says the relation alone does not make a Raja Yoga when the lord also owns an evil house. The 9th-house chapter adds Ch. 20 Sl. 1: the native is fortunate when the 9th lord is in the 9th with strength. For the two Ascendants where the 4th lord also owns the 9th, this placement meets that verse too.

The Bhrigu Sutras in the corpus read a 4th lord that is exalted or in its own sign, in an angle or trine, as giving high-class conveyances; the 9th is a trine, so dignity decides. Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 reads benefic and malefic relations to the 4th lord for vehicles. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 45 by strength. The Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse.

Set beside the reverse verse

The reverse, the 9th lord in the 4th (Ch. 24 Sl. 100), is just as favourable and more concrete: houses, conveyances and happiness, every kind of wealth, and devotion to the mother. Sl. 45 gives the 4th lord the 9th's virtue and devotion; Sl. 100 gives the 9th lord the 4th's houses and vehicles. When both happen at once, the lords have exchanged signs between an angle and a trine, which BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 names among its yoga-forming relations and the engine reports as a favourable Parivartana Yoga.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 4th lord in the 9th sign:

AquariusVenus9th (Libra)LibraMoolatrikona or Own sign by degree
PiscesMercury7th (Virgo)ScorpioNeutral
The 4th lord and the 9th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses). Dignity is the engine's dignityOf() for that planet in that sign at 1, 10, 18 and 28 degrees, with natural relationships only.

Leo and Aquarius rising are the special rows. For Leo rising Mars owns the 4th (Scorpio) and 9th (Aries); for Aquarius rising Venus owns the 4th (Taurus) and 9th (Libra). In each case the yogakaraka sits in its own sign or moolatrikona in the 9th, meeting Ch. 34 Sl. 13, Ch. 20 Sl. 1 and the Bhrigu Sutras' strong-lord clause at once. Cancer rising gives exaltation: Venus, lord of the 4th and 11th, in Pisces.

Four rows give an enemy's sign (Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn), two a friendly one (Libra, Sagittarius) and three a neutral one; there is no debilitation. For Libra rising the yogakaraka Saturn is in Gemini, friendly. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the 4th lord is the Lagna lord too, so Ch. 24 Sl. 9 (the Lagna lord in the 9th, the most favourable of the Lagna-lord verses) applies alongside. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the 4th lord also owns the 11th, and for Scorpio the 3rd, the cases Ch. 34 Sl. 15 qualifies.

Strength changes the reading

Dignity, combustion and company scale Sl. 45. Aspects on the 9th come from the 3rd by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 1st and 5th, Mars from the 6th and 2nd, and Saturn from the 7th and 12th. The 9th lord's condition matters as well, because the 4th lord is its guest and because Ch. 20 reads fortune from it.

Worked example: Taurus rising, the Sun in Capricorn

The engine's deterministic search returned: 28 January 1985, 13:51 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Taurus 20.77. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • Taurus rising makes Leo the 4th, so the Sun is the 4th lord. It owns no other sign.
  • The Sun is in Capricorn at 14.72 degrees, Shravana pada 2: the 9th house. The engine gives "Neutral" in this chart (Enemy sign by sign alone).
  • Mercury (0.16, friendly) and Jupiter (4.22, debilitated and combust) share Capricorn.
  • Saturn, which owns Capricorn (the 9th) and Aquarius (the 10th), is in Scorpio in the 7th and aspects the 9th by its 3rd-house special aspect. The engine reports Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga for Saturn, as lord of both the 9th and 10th.

The angle-lord-in-trine relation is present; the Sun owns no evil house, so Ch. 34 Sl. 15's limit does not apply. The Sun is neutral in this chart, the middle of Sl. 145-148's scale, and not in its own sign or exalted, so the Bhrigu Sutras' strong-lord clause is not met. Its companions are mixed: Mercury, which for Taurus rising owns the 2nd and 5th (a trine), and a debilitated, combust Jupiter. The 9th lord aspects its own house, which BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 counts in the 9th's favour, though from an enemy's sign. No exchange occurs, since the 9th lord is in the 7th rather than the 4th. From the 9th, the Sun casts its seventh-house aspect on the 3rd, the house of effort.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 4th lord in the 9th house in 252, or 8.4%. That describes sampled moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse case is the 9th lord in the 4th house; for angle-trine exchanges see Parivartana Yoga. The adjacent placements are the 4th lord in the 8th and the 4th lord in the 10th; the other trine is the 4th lord in the 5th. For the engine's named yoga see Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga, and for the worked example's planet the Sun in the 9th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Questions about the 4th lord in the 9th house

What does BPHS say about the 4th lord in the 9th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 45: dear to all, devout, virtuous, honoured, with every kind of happiness.
Is it a Raja Yoga?
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 says an angle lord in a trine causes a yoga. Sl. 15 qualifies it when the lord also owns an evil house, and BPHS scales every result by strength.
Which Ascendants give the strongest version?
Leo and Aquarius rising, where the 4th lord also owns the 9th, is the yogakaraka and sits in its own sign there. Cancer rising gives an exalted Venus.
Does it say anything about property?
Sl. 45 does not; its reverse, Sl. 100, speaks of houses and vehicles. The Bhrigu Sutras read a strong 4th lord in a trine as good for conveyances. None of this is a property forecast.
What if the 4th lord is also the Lagna lord?
For Gemini and Sagittarius rising it is (Mercury, Jupiter). Then Ch. 24 Sl. 9, the Lagna lord in the 9th, applies to the same planet, and BPHS reads both lordships together under Sl. 145-148.
How common is it?
252 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.4%) in the engine's sample.
