In short

The 9th lord in the 4th house is the ruler of fortune and dharma placed in the angle of home, property, vehicles and the mother. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 100 reads it as houses, conveyances, happiness, all kinds of wealth and devotion to the mother. Because the 4th is a Kendra, a strong 9th lord here meets half of the Lakshmi Yoga rule.

What the placement means

"The 9th lord in the 4th house" is the planet ruling the house of fortune, the father and dharma, standing in the house of home, land, vehicles, the mother and inner contentment. As a house lord it carries the 9th house's affairs into the 4th.

The 4th is a Kendra (angle) and the 9th a trikona (trine), so this is a trine lord in an angle, the textbook link BPHS builds its yoga rules on. Counted from the 9th, though, the 4th is the 8th house, a reminder that the texts read placements from more than one starting point. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) governs fortune, the father, teachers and religious merit.

The 4th house (Sukha Bhava) governs the mother, home, landed property, conveyances and happiness. Its page sets out those significations; here it is the destination.

What BPHS says about the 9th lord in the 4th

Ch. 24 Sl. 100 reads: if the lord of Dharm is in the Bandhu Bhava, the native "will enjoy houses, conveyances and happiness", will have all kinds of wealth and will be devoted to the mother. The bphs-alt wording is identical. Each clause is a 4th-house theme, delivered with the 9th lord's fortune: the text reads the placement as the house of luck furnishing the house of home.

The chapter's closing verses, Sl. 145-148, apply as always: judge the effect by strength (full, half or a quarter), read both lordships of a planet that owns two houses, and let contrary results cancel.

A trine lord in an angle

Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 say that a Kon lord placed in a Kendra, among other links, causes a yoga, and Sl. 13 names a planet a Yog Karak when it is in a Kendra or a Kon or owns both. The 9th lord in the 4th is the placement case directly. This app's detector reads that chapter more narrowly: it reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga only when a Kendra lord and a Kona lord are joined in one house or in mutual aspect, so the 9th lord in the 4th alone is not enough; a Kendra lord beside it is.

Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28 add Lakshmi Yoga: the 9th lord in a Kendra that is its own, moolatrikona or exaltation sign, with the Lagna lord strong. The 4th is a Kendra, and the table below shows three Ascendants where the 9th lord is in its own or exaltation sign in the 4th. The engine does not test Lakshmi Yoga, so those rows have to be checked by hand, including the Lagna lord's strength.

The Bhrigu Sutras have no sutra on this lordship, but the editor's commentary on Jupiter in the 4th notes the Aries-rising case: Jupiter there is "lord of the 9th exalted in the 4th". Saravali is silent.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The 9th lord and the 4th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

Three Ascendants meet Lakshmi Yoga's sign condition by the placement alone: Aries (Jupiter exalted in Cancer), Leo (Mars in its own Scorpio, which is also the 4th sign, so Mars is a yogakaraka in its own Kendra) and Aquarius (Venus in its own Taurus, again owning both the 4th and the 9th). Three put the 9th lord in an enemy sign: Saturn in Leo (Taurus rising), Jupiter in Libra (Cancer) and Mars in Gemini (Pisces). No Ascendant debilitates it here.

Strength changes the reading

The planet's dignity sets how much of Sl. 100 the text expects. For Lakshmi Yoga the Lagna lord's strength is a second, separate test. A 9th lord in the 4th can also be weakened by combustion or by malefic company.

The 4th is also the 8th counted from the 9th. BPHS uses that kind of derived counting elsewhere (Ch. 34 itself explains that the 8th lord is inauspicious because it owns the 12th from the 9th), but Sl. 100 does not draw any negative inference from it: the verse for this placement is wholly favourable. Where a reader meets claims that the 9th lord in the 4th "hides" fortune because it is 8th from its own house, that is a derived argument, not the text of Ch. 24.

Aspect is the last measure. From the 4th, every graha aspects the 10th, the other angle on the same axis; a Mars 9th lord adds the 7th and 11th, a Jupiter the 8th and 12th, a Saturn the 6th and 1st. For Leo rising this means the yogakaraka Mars, from its own Scorpio, looks at the 10th, 7th and 11th at once, three houses tied to work, partners and gains.

The second lordship matters: Jupiter for Aries rising also rules the 12th, Mercury for Libra rising the 12th, Mercury for Capricorn rising the 6th, and Jupiter for Cancer rising the 6th. Ch. 34 Sl. 7 lets the trine lordship stall the dusthana, but Sl. 145-148 still ask for both to be read.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 4th lord in the 9th (Sl. 45), reads as dear to all, devoted to God, virtuous, honourable and happy in every way. Both together form a parivartana between a Kendra and a Kon, the exchange Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 name first among the yoga-causing links. Next door, the 9th lord in the 3rd (Sl. 99) is about siblings and the 9th lord in the 5th (Sl. 101) about children and learning.

Worked example: Sagittarius rising, the Sun in Pisces

The engine's deterministic search returned this chart: 15 March 1985, 02:56 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Sagittarius 23.1. It can be entered in the birth chart calculator as is.

  • With Sagittarius rising the 9th house is Leo, so the 9th lord is the Sun, which owns no other sign.
  • The 4th house is Pisces. The Sun is there at 0.6 degrees, Purva Bhadrapada pada 4, barely inside the sign; dignity "Friendly sign".
  • Mercury (Pisces 18.67, "Debilitated") and Venus (28.63, "Exalted", retrograde) are in the 4th with it.
  • The Lagna lord Jupiter is in Capricorn in the 2nd, "Debilitated".

Lakshmi Yoga does not form: the Sun is in a friendly sign, not Leo or Aries, and the Lagna lord is debilitated, so neither condition holds. The Kendra-Kona link does: Mercury rules the 7th and 10th for Sagittarius rising, both Kendras, and it sits in the same house as the Sun, the 9th lord, so the engine's conjunction test is met. Because Mercury is also the 10th lord, the engine reports Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga as well: the 9th and 10th lords together in a Kendra. The chart shows the two layers BPHS keeps apart: Sl. 100 scaled by a friendly-sign Sun, and a separate yoga rule triggered by company.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 9th lord in the 4th house in 228, or 7.6%. Moments of the sky, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Get your rising sign from the Lagna calculator and the 9th lord from the table.
  2. See whether it stands in the fourth sign in your birth chart.
  3. If it is in its own or exaltation sign, check the Lagna lord's strength for Lakshmi Yoga by hand.
  4. Run the yoga calculator to see whether a Kendra-Kona link is flagged.

Questions about the 9th lord in the 4th

What does BPHS say about the 9th lord in the 4th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 100: houses, conveyances, happiness, all kinds of wealth and devotion to the mother, scaled by strength under Sl. 145-148.
Does the 9th lord in the 4th give Lakshmi Yoga?
Only if the 9th lord is in its own, moolatrikona or exaltation sign there and the Lagna lord is strong (Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28). By sign, that is possible for Aries, Leo and Aquarius rising. The engine does not test this yoga.
Will this placement give me property?
BPHS lists houses and conveyances in the verse, as a classical tendency scaled by strength. This app does not forecast purchases or inheritance from a placement.
Which planet is my 9th lord?
The ruler of the ninth sign from your Ascendant; see the table, or find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
Is the 9th lord in the 4th a Raj Yoga in this app?
Not by itself. The engine reports a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga when a Kendra lord and a Kona lord are joined in one house or in mutual aspect, so it fires here when a Kendra lord shares the 4th with the 9th lord, as in the worked example.
How common is it?
It occurred in 228 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.6%.
