In short
The 2nd lord in the 5th house places the ruler of wealth and family in the trine of children, intelligence and past merit. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 17 reads it as wealth for the native and sons who are themselves intent on earning. Ch. 13 adds that a 2nd lord in a trine promotes wealth, and Ch. 41 builds several affluence combinations on a planet in its own sign in the 5th.
What the placement means
The 2nd house lord carries wealth, family and speech. In the 5th house it sits in the house of children, learning, intelligence and authority. The placement connects what a family holds to what it passes on.
The 5th is a trikona, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 calls the 5th and 9th the houses "specially for wealth". A wealth lord in a wealth trine is therefore a placement the texts read favourably on more than one count.
The two houses involved
The 2nd house (Dhana Bhava) is wealth, grain, family, metals and precious stones in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3.
The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is learning, knowledge, sons, authority, sacred formulae and fall from position in Ch. 11 Sl. 6. Both house pages expand on these.
What BPHS says about the 2nd lord in the 5th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 17 reads: if the 2nd lord is in the 5th, "the native will be wealthy. Not only the native, but also his sons will be intent on earning wealth." bphs-alt.txt has the same words.
The verse is unusual in reaching past the native to the next generation. It takes the 5th's signification (children) and gives them the 2nd's (wealth): the sons are described by their pursuit of money. There is no fault list and no condition. It is one of the clearest examples in Ch. 24 of a verse built by combining the two houses' meanings directly.
BPHS supports it from three directions. Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 says the 2nd lord in a trine promotes wealth. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 calls the 5th a house "specially for wealth". And Ch. 41, on wealth combinations, opens with a series in which a planet occupies its own sign in the 5th while named planets occupy the 11th: Sl. 3 has Mercury in its own sign in the 5th with the Moon, Mars and Jupiter in the 11th; Sl. 6 has Jupiter in its own sign in the 5th with Mercury in the 11th. Those are full combinations with conditions on the 11th; the 2nd lord in the 5th is the first half of some of them, as the table below shows.
For the children side, Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 reads children from the 5th lord and the Lagna lord, not from the 2nd lord, so Sl. 17's line about sons is the only statement here that ties the 2nd lord to them. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 2nd lord in the 5th sign:
| Ascendant | 2nd lord | Other house it rules | 5th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Venus | 7th (Libra) | Leo | Enemy sign |
| Taurus | Mercury | 5th (Virgo) | Virgo | Exalted or Moolatrikona or Own sign by degree |
| Gemini | Moon | none | Libra | Neutral |
| Cancer | Sun | none | Scorpio | Friendly sign |
| Leo | Mercury | 11th (Gemini) | Sagittarius | Neutral |
| Virgo | Venus | 9th (Taurus) | Capricorn | Friendly sign |
| Libra | Mars | 7th (Aries) | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | 5th (Pisces) | Pisces | Own sign |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | 3rd (Aquarius) | Aries | Debilitated |
| Capricorn | Saturn | 1st (Capricorn) | Taurus | Friendly sign |
| Aquarius | Jupiter | 11th (Sagittarius) | Gemini | Enemy sign |
| Pisces | Mars | 9th (Scorpio) | Cancer | Debilitated |
Two rows stand out because the 2nd lord also owns the 5th. For Taurus rising Mercury owns Gemini (2nd) and Virgo (5th), so in Virgo it is in its own sign and can be exalted or in moolatrikona by degree; that is the first half of Ch. 41 Sl. 3. For Scorpio rising Jupiter owns Sagittarius (2nd) and Pisces (5th), so in Pisces it is in its own sign; that is the first half of Ch. 41 Sl. 6. In both cases the remaining conditions concern planets in the 11th.
Spelled out with whole-sign houses, those remaining conditions are specific. For Taurus rising the 11th is Pisces, so Ch. 41 Sl. 3 asks for the Moon, Mars and Jupiter all in Pisces while Mercury is in Virgo. For Scorpio rising the 11th is Virgo, so Ch. 41 Sl. 6 asks for Mercury in Virgo while Jupiter is in Pisces; that would put Mercury in its own sign and Jupiter in its own sign, each in the other's house of wealth or merit. The engine's yoga detector does test this Ch. 41 family: it reports a "Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence)" when a planet is in its own sign in the 5th and the named planets are all in the 11th, so a chart that meets the full condition will show it in the yoga calculator.
Two rows give debilitation: Sagittarius rising (Saturn in Aries) and Pisces rising (Mars in Cancer). Two give an enemy's sign: Aries rising (Venus in Leo) and Aquarius rising (Jupiter in Gemini). The rest are friendly (Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn) or neutral (Gemini, Leo, Libra).
Strength changes the reading
Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7 is the main warning for any 2nd-lord placement: the 2nd and 11th lords both combust, or both with malefics, signal penury. For Leo and Aquarius rising the 2nd and 11th lords are the same planet, so the test falls on one body. The planet's nature matters too: Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 says a benefic in the 2nd gives wealth and a malefic destroys it, and while that verse is about the 2nd itself, a malefic 2nd lord leaving the 2nd for the 5th takes its nature with it.
The second lordship brings more: the 7th for Aries and Libra rising, the 9th for Virgo and Pisces (two trine-linked lordships in a trine), the 3rd for Sagittarius, the 1st for Capricorn (so the Lagna lord is in the 5th too). Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 reads them together. Aspects on the 5th come from the 11th by the seventh-house aspect, and from Jupiter in the 1st or 9th, Mars in the 2nd or 10th, and Saturn in the 3rd or 8th.
Worked example: Leo rising, Mercury combust in Sagittarius
The engine's deterministic search returned: 18 January 1986, 19:54 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Leo 2.18. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Leo rising makes Virgo the 2nd, so Mercury is the 2nd lord. Mercury also owns Gemini, the 11th.
- Mercury is in Sagittarius at 25.95 degrees, Purva Ashadha pada 4: the 5th house. Not retrograde; the engine marks it combust, with dignity "Friendly sign".
- The Sun is in Capricorn at 4.55 in the 6th, less than nine degrees from Mercury. Venus is also in Capricorn, combust, and Jupiter, the 5th lord, is there too, debilitated.
- Nothing other than the nodes aspects the 5th under the engine's rule.
The trine condition of Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 is met, and Sl. 17 applies. But this chart shows Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7 in its single-planet form: Mercury is both the 2nd and the 11th lord, and it is combust, so "the lords of Dhan and Labh" are combust together. Sl. 145-148 would also reduce a combust planet's share of Sl. 17. The 5th lord, Jupiter, is debilitated in the 6th, which Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 counts against the 5th house's own matters. None of this is a forecast; it is the text's rules applied to the engine's positions.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 2nd lord in the 5th house in 263, or 8.8%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 5th lord in the 2nd house (Sl. 50), speaks of many sons and wealth and a native attached to his spouse. The adjacent placements are the 2nd lord in the 4th and the 2nd lord in the 6th; the other trine is the 2nd lord in the 9th. For wealth combinations generally see dhana yoga, and for the worked example's planet Mercury in the 5th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
