In short
The 3rd lord in the 10th house places the ruler of courage, effort and siblings in the angle of profession, authority and honour. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 34 reads it as every kind of happiness and self-made wealth, with a moralising clause about the native's associations that belongs to the text. BPHS Ch. 11 names a lord in the 10th as a sign of its own house's well-being, and Ch. 14 counts a 3rd lord in an angle as good for siblings.
What the placement means
The 3rd house lord rules courage, effort, siblings and attendants. In the 10th house it sits at the top of the chart, in the angle of work, rank, honour and public action. The planet of personal initiative stands in the house where initiative becomes visible.
The 10th is a Kendra and, like the 3rd, an upachaya, a house that grows with effort. It is also the 8th house counted from the 3rd. BPHS does not cite that counting for this placement; it reads the 3rd lord in the 10th through the 10th's own strength as a house.
The two houses involved
The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is valour, servants, siblings, initiatory instruction and journeys in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4.
The 10th house (Karma Bhava) is authority, place, livelihood, honour, the father, living abroad and debts in Ch. 11 Sl. 11. The house pages develop both.
What BPHS says about the 3rd lord in the 10th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 34 says that with the 3rd lord in the 10th the native will have every kind of happiness "and self-made wealth" (the translation prints "all lands of happiness", which reads as a misprint for "kinds"). It adds a moralising clause about the company of disreputable women, which this page reports only in summary as the text's idiom. bphs-alt.txt has the same words.
"Self-made wealth" is the key phrase, and it echoes Sl. 25 for the 3rd lord in the 1st and Sl. 10 for the Lagna lord in the 10th: wherever effort (the 3rd) or the self (the 1st) meets the 10th, Ch. 24 speaks of wealth earned by one's own work. "All kinds of happiness" is general. The moral clause is reported without application to anyone.
Two other BPHS rules support the favourable side. Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 says that when a house's lord is "in Karm Bhava", the house's "well-being is indicated", which, applied here, points to the 3rd house prospering. And Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 says happiness through siblings comes when the 3rd lord is in an angle, and the 10th is an angle. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 keeps its caution about owning the 3rd. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scales Sl. 34 by strength and reads both lordships. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse for this placement.
Set beside the reverse verse
The reverse, the 10th lord in the 3rd (Ch. 24 Sl. 111), is entirely favourable: happiness from brothers and servants, valour, virtue, eloquence and truthfulness. Sl. 111 gives the 3rd house's significations to the 10th lord; Sl. 34 gives the 10th's self-earned wealth to the 3rd lord. Here the two directions agree in tone, which is not true of every pair in the chapter. When both happen together the lords have exchanged signs, and the engine reports a Parivartana Yoga.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 3rd lord in the 10th sign:
| Ascendant | 3rd lord | Other house it rules | 10th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mercury | 6th (Virgo) | Capricorn | Neutral |
| Taurus | Moon | none | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Gemini | Sun | none | Pisces | Friendly sign |
| Cancer | Mercury | 12th (Gemini) | Aries | Neutral |
| Leo | Venus | 10th (Taurus) | Taurus | Own sign |
| Virgo | Mars | 8th (Aries) | Gemini | Enemy sign |
| Libra | Jupiter | 6th (Pisces) | Cancer | Exalted |
| Scorpio | Saturn | 4th (Aquarius) | Leo | Enemy sign |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | 2nd (Capricorn) | Virgo | Friendly sign |
| Capricorn | Jupiter | 12th (Sagittarius) | Libra | Enemy sign |
| Aquarius | Mars | 10th (Scorpio) | Scorpio | Own sign |
| Pisces | Venus | 8th (Libra) | Sagittarius | Neutral |
Leo and Aquarius rising are the special rows: the 3rd lord also owns the 10th (Venus for Leo, Mars for Aquarius), so it sits in its own sign in the 10th. Libra rising gives exaltation: Jupiter, lord of the 3rd and 6th, in Cancer. Three rows give an enemy's sign (Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn), two a friendly one (Gemini, Sagittarius) and four a neutral one. There is no debilitation in this table.
For Leo and Aquarius rising, BPHS's angle rule meets its ownership caution in one planet: Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says benefics owning angles lose benefic force and malefics owning them lose malefic force, and that the owner of the 3rd gives evil effects. Venus (Leo rising) is a benefic owning an angle and the 3rd; Mars (Aquarius rising) is a malefic owning an angle and the 3rd. Sl. 145-148 asks for both lordships to be read and contrary indications to cancel.
Each second lordship brings its own Ch. 24 verse for the 10th into play beside Sl. 34. In summary: for Leo and Aquarius rising, Sl. 118 (the 10th lord in the 10th) reads skill in all work, valour, truthfulness and devotion to elders. For Scorpio, Sl. 46 (the 4th lord in the 10th) reads royal honours, pleasures and mastery of the senses. For Aries and Libra, Sl. 70 (the 6th lord in the 10th) reads renown among one's people, a strained relation with the father, happiness abroad and a gift for speech. For Virgo and Pisces, Sl. 94 (the 8th lord in the 10th) reads difficulties of livelihood and with the father, but adds that a benefic aspect stops those evils from maturing. For Cancer and Capricorn, Sl. 142 (the 12th lord in the 10th) reads expenditure through people in power. For Sagittarius, Sl. 22 (the 2nd lord in the 10th). These are the text's statements, summarised and not applied to anyone; they show how much the Ascendant changes what this placement carries.
Strength changes the reading
Dignity, combustion and company scale Sl. 34. Aspects on the 10th come from the 4th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 2nd and 6th, Mars from the 7th and 3rd, and Saturn from the 8th and 1st. BPHS Ch. 7 assigns "power (and position)" to the Dashamsa, so a reader following the classical method checks the 3rd lord there too.
Worked example: Gemini rising, the Sun in Pisces
The engine's deterministic search returned: 11 April 1985, 10:47 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Gemini 14.92. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Gemini rising makes Leo the 3rd, so the Sun is the 3rd lord. It owns no other sign.
- The Sun is in Pisces at 27.62 degrees, Revati pada 4: the 10th house. The engine gives "Friendly sign".
- Pisces also holds Mercury, the Lagna lord (14.64, debilitated and retrograde), and Venus (16.11, exalted and retrograde).
- The 10th lord, Jupiter, is debilitated in Capricorn in the 8th. Nothing other than the nodes aspects the 10th.
The Sun is a friendly 3rd lord in an angle, the condition of Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6, and as a luminary it brings no second lordship to weigh. The 10th is crowded: the Lagna lord is there too, so Ch. 24 Sl. 10 (the Lagna lord in the 10th) applies to Mercury, though debilitated. The engine's yoga detector reports Malavya Yoga for exalted Venus in an angle, and Sarala Yoga for Saturn, which owns the 8th and sits in the 6th. The 10th lord itself is weak, debilitated in a dusthana, which BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 would count against the 10th as a house. As always on these pages, the rules are set side by side and no verdict about any person is drawn.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 3rd lord in the 10th house in 280, or 9.3%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case is the 10th lord in the 3rd house. The adjacent placements are the 3rd lord in the 9th and the 3rd lord in the 11th; the other angles are covered by the 4th and the 7th. The Dashamsa calculator computes the tenth division. For the worked example's planet see the Sun in the 10th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
