House lords

The lord of the 5th house placed in the 6th: what BPHS says, how a second lordship can reverse it, the planet for each Ascendant and an engine-computed chart that also forms Sarala Yoga.

In short

The 5th lord in the 6th house places the ruler of children and intelligence in the house of enemies, debts and illness. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 54 reads it harshly for children: offspring who become like adversaries, loss, or an adopted child. The text scales that by strength, and where the same planet also rules the 8th or 12th, other rules come into play.

What the placement means

The 5th house lord is the planet ruling the 5th sign from the Ascendant. When it stands in the 6th sign, the 5th house's concerns - children, learning, discernment - are carried into the house the texts read for opponents, disputes, debt, service and disease.

Counted from the 5th, the 6th is the 2nd house: the lord has moved only one sign forward. Counted from the Ascendant, it has moved from a trine, the most favoured class of house, into a dusthana, the least favoured. That drop is what Sl. 54 describes.

The two houses involved

The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is a trikona, read for children, intellect and merit. Its page has the full list of significations.

The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is one of the three dusthanas (6th, 8th, 12th) and also an upachaya, a house where planets are classically expected to improve with time. It covers enemies, competition, illness, debts and service.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 54

Sl. 54 reads: "If Putr's Lord is in Ari Bhava, the native will obtain such sons, who will be equal to his enemies, or will lose them, or will acquire an adopted, or purchased son." It is entirely about children, and it offers three alternatives rather than one outcome.

The verse is harsh, and it should be read as what it is: a classical text's statement about a combination, written in a world where adoption and the purchase of an heir were institutions. It is not a prediction about anyone's family, and this app does not make such predictions. What the verse does show clearly is the logic of Ch. 24: the significations of the 5th (children) are pulled toward the significations of the 6th (enmity, loss).

The reverse placement shares the theme. Sl. 65, Ari's lord in Putr, gives "fluctuating finances", enmity with sons and friends, and yet a person who is happy, selfish and kind. Whichever way the two lords move, BPHS ties the 5th and 6th together through strained relations with children.

Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 then do two important things. They scale the verse by the lord's strength (full, half, a quarter). And they say that a planet ruling two houses gives the results of both, with contrary results cancelling. For this placement that second rule matters more than usual, because for several Ascendants the 5th lord also rules a dusthana - and a dusthana lord in a dusthana is read differently.

When the 5th lord also rules the 8th or 12th

The commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus quotes Uttara Kalamrita: the 8th lord in the 6th or 12th, the 6th lord in the 8th or 12th, and the 12th lord in the 8th or 6th are conditions of Vipareeta Raja Yoga, said there to confer fame and wealth. This app's engine flags the 8th-lord version as Sarala Yoga and the 12th-lord version as Vimala Yoga. When the 5th lord also rules the 8th (Leo and Aquarius rising) or the 12th (Gemini and Sagittarius rising), the 5th lord in the 6th is therefore also one of those yogas, and Sl. 145-148's cancellation rule is in play. The Saravali has no verse on the placement itself.

The 5th lord and the 6th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

Virgo rising is a special row: Saturn rules the 5th and the 6th, so it is in its own sign Aquarius (moolatrikona for most of it) and its own house. Leo rising is the opposite extreme for dignity: Jupiter, lord of the 5th and 8th, is debilitated in Capricorn - yet it is also the 8th lord in the 6th. Aquarius rising puts Mercury, also lord of the 8th, in an enemy sign. Cancer and Capricorn rising put a yogakaraka (Mars or Venus, ruler of the 5th and 10th) in the 6th, in friendly signs.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity. Sl. 145-148 tie the share of Sl. 54's effect to strength; the engine's dignity label is the first input.
  • Second lordship. The 8th or 12th (vipareeta conditions), the 6th itself (Virgo), the 10th or 4th (yogakaraka rows), the 2nd (Taurus, Scorpio) - each brings its own results, which the text says combine or cancel.
  • Association. The 6th is aspected from the 12th, and by Mars from the 3rd or 11th, Jupiter from the 2nd or 10th, Saturn from the 4th or 9th (drishti). The Uttara Kalamrita condition quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary asks that the dusthana lords be free of such relations with other planets.

Note what strength does in a dusthana. In a good house, a strong lord gives more of a good verse; here, read literally, a strong lord gives more of Sl. 54. BPHS does not soften this anywhere in Ch. 24. The softening, where it comes, comes from the second lordship and the vipareeta rule, not from the placement.

Worked example: Leo rising, Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn

The engine's deterministic search produced this chart, which anyone can re-enter in the birth chart calculator: 15 February 1985, 19:05 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Leo 15.68.

  • With Leo rising, the 5th house is Sagittarius and the 8th is Pisces, both ruled by Jupiter. The 6th is Capricorn.
  • Jupiter is in Capricorn at 8.4 degrees, Uttara Ashadha pada 4, in the 6th. The engine marks it Debilitated; it is neither retrograde nor combust.
  • Saturn, the 6th lord, is in Scorpio in the 4th and aspects the 6th by its special 3rd-house aspect. No planet shares the 6th with Jupiter.
  • The engine's yoga detector reports Sarala Yoga for Jupiter: the 8th lord in a dusthana.

This chart shows Sl. 145-148 at work. As 5th lord in the 6th, Jupiter carries Sl. 54. As 8th lord in the 6th, it carries Sl. 90 - Randhr's lord in Ari: the native "will win over his enemies", with illness and early dangers - and it meets the vipareeta condition. Ch. 34 Sl. 29-30 adds that Jupiter is auspicious for Simh Lagn. All of this passes through a debilitated planet, which the strength rule puts at the "quarter" end. BPHS gives no arithmetic for netting these out; it says only that contrary results cancel. For Jupiter's planet-level reading here, see Jupiter in the 6th house.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 5th lord in the 6th house in 261, or 8.7%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 6th lord in the 5th (Sl. 65), is summarised above; both together are an exchange of signs (parivartana) between a trine lord and a dusthana lord. The 5th lord one house back, in its own 5th, makes children conditional on association (Sl. 53); one house on, in the 7th (Sl. 55), gives honour, religion and happiness through children. The other two dusthana placements, the 5th lord in the 8th and in the 12th, carry similarly restrained verses.

  1. Find the Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and read the 5th lord from the table.
  2. Check the birth chart for that planet in the 6th sign, and note its dignity.
  3. If it also rules the 8th or 12th, see whether the yoga calculator lists Sarala or Vimala Yoga for it.

Questions about the 5th lord in the 6th

What does BPHS say about the 5th lord in the 6th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 54: sons who are like one's enemies, or their loss, or an adopted or purchased son. It is the text's statement about a combination, scaled by the lord's strength; this app does not predict anything about children.
Can the placement be good?
When the 5th lord also rules the 8th or 12th, it is a dusthana lord in a dusthana, which the Uttara Kalamrita verse quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary counts as Vipareeta Raja Yoga. BPHS Sl. 145-148 say the two lordships combine, and contrary results cancel.
Does a strong 5th lord in the 6th help?
Read literally, a stronger lord gives more of the verse it carries. BPHS does not say strength in a dusthana reverses the result; the second lordship and associations are what modify it.
Which Ascendant makes the 5th lord also the 6th lord?
Virgo rising: Saturn rules Capricorn (5th) and Aquarius (6th), so here it is simply in its own sign and own house.
How common is it?
261 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.7%.
