In short
The 5th lord in the 5th house is the ruler of children and intelligence sitting in its own sign, so it is always in its own sign or moolatrikona. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 53 is the one Putr verse with a condition: children if the lord is joined by a benefic, none if joined by a malefic, and in either case a virtuous person dear to friends.
What the placement means
A house lord in its own house is the simplest case in the system: the planet that owns the 5th sign is standing in it. The matters of the 5th - children, learning, discernment, mantra and the merit carried from past action - are looked after, in the texts' language, by their own ruler.
Two consequences follow at once. The planet is always in its own sign, and for several Ascendants in moolatrikona or even exaltation; and the house it occupies is a trine, the class of house BPHS treats as auspicious. On those two counts alone it is one of the strongest positions a 5th lord can take. BPHS nonetheless adds a condition, and the condition is the interesting part of this page.
The two houses involved
Here the two houses are one. The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is a trikona with the 1st and 9th. Its page covers its significations: children, intelligence, judgement, devotional practice and speculation among them.
What the placement adds is a second reference point - the 1st house - because the 5th is the 5th from the Lagna, and the lord being there also puts it in trine to the Ascendant. Whole-sign counting (whole-sign houses) means the placement is true whenever the 5th lord is anywhere in its 5th-house sign.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 53
Sl. 53 reads: "If Putr's Lord is in Putr Bhava, the native will have progeny, if related to a benefic; there will be no issues, if malefic is related to Putr's Lord, placed in Putr Bhava. Putr's Lord in Putr Bhava will, however, make one virtuous and dear to friends."
It is the only verse in the Putr series (Sl. 49-60) that makes its main result depend on association. The verse splits into a conditional half about children and an unconditional half about character. Whatever joins the lord, BPHS says the person will be virtuous and liked by friends; only the question of children turns on whether a benefic or a malefic is "related" to the lord.
"Related" is the text's word, and the chapter uses it loosely: elsewhere in Ch. 24 a relation can be a conjunction (yuti) or an aspect (drishti). The verse does not say how strong the malefic must be, or what happens when both a benefic and a malefic are related. Those gaps are real; this page leaves them open rather than fill them. The harsh half is the text's claim about a combination, not a prediction about any reader, and this app does not make predictions about children.
There is also a puzzle the verse does not address: what if the 5th lord is itself a natural malefic - the Sun, Mars or Saturn, as it is for five Ascendants? BPHS's condition speaks of something else being related to the lord, so the plainest reading is that the lord's own nature is not the test. That is a reading of the wording, not a ruling from the text.
A commentary in the Bhrigu Sutras
The commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras in this project's corpus, discussing Mars in the 5th, takes up exactly this placement for Sagittarius rising: Mars is then in Aries as lord of the 5th and 12th, and the commentator says that, being in its own sign in the 5th, "the evil effects of the lord-ship of the 12th will not be felt". That is a commentator's judgement, not Bhrigu's sutra, but it is the only text in the corpus besides BPHS that speaks to the 5th lord in the 5th.
Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 complete the frame: the effect comes in full, half or quarter by strength, and both lordships of a two-house planet act. The Saravali has no verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
Because the lord is in its own sign, the dignity column is always own sign or better; where it depends on degree, the engine's moolatrikona or exaltation range decides it. The last column is the other house the planet owns.
| Ascendant | 5th lord | 5th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Sun | Leo | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | none |
| Taurus | Mercury | Virgo | Exalted, moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 2nd |
| Gemini | Venus | Libra | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 12th |
| Cancer | Mars | Scorpio | Own sign | 10th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Sagittarius | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 8th |
| Virgo | Saturn | Capricorn | Own sign | 6th |
| Libra | Saturn | Aquarius | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 4th |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | Pisces | Own sign | 2nd |
| Sagittarius | Mars | Aries | Moolatrikona or own sign, by degree | 12th |
| Capricorn | Venus | Taurus | Own sign | 10th |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Gemini | Own sign | 8th |
| Pisces | Moon | Cancer | Own sign | none |
The dignity column is uniform, so the useful differences are elsewhere. First, the planet's nature: by Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, Jupiter (Leo, Scorpio) and Venus (Gemini, Capricorn) are benefics; the Sun (Aries), Mars (Cancer, Sagittarius) and Saturn (Virgo, Libra) are malefics; Mercury (Taurus, Aquarius) is neutral and the Moon (Pisces) mediocre. Second, the other house: Cancer, Capricorn and Libra make the lord a yogakaraka, while Leo and Aquarius add the 8th, Virgo the 6th, and Gemini and Sagittarius the 12th. Taurus rising is the only row where the engine can return exaltation, because Virgo is both Mercury's sign of exaltation and its own.
Strength changes the reading
Dignity is settled here, so the weight falls on the two things Sl. 53 and Sl. 145-148 name:
- Association. Which planets join the lord in the 5th, and which aspect the 5th - from the 11th by the 7th aspect, and by the special aspects of Mars (from the 2nd or 10th), Jupiter (from the 1st or 9th) and Saturn (from the 3rd or 8th). This is Sl. 53's own test.
- The nodes. Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says Rahu and Ketu give results according to the lord they join or the house they occupy. A node beside the 5th lord therefore takes colour from it; whether that counts as a "malefic related" for Sl. 53 is not stated.
- The second lordship, and combustion or retrograde motion, which the engine reports for each planet.
Worked example: Sagittarius rising, Mars in Aries
The engine's deterministic search produced this chart: 15 March 1985, 02:56 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Sagittarius 23.1. It is the very case the Bhrigu Sutras commentary discusses.
- With Sagittarius rising, the 5th house is Aries, ruled by Mars, which also rules Scorpio, the 12th.
- Mars is in Aries at 6.13 degrees, Ashwini pada 2, in the 5th. The engine marks it Moolatrikona; it is not retrograde or combust.
- Rahu is also in Aries, at 27.65 - a node beside the 5th lord.
- No planet aspects the 5th by the engine's whole-sign aspect rule.
Lordship and dignity both point one way here: Ch. 34 Sl. 37-38 names Mars and the Sun as auspicious for Dhanu Lagn, Mars is at moolatrikona strength, and the commentator quoted above says its 12th-house lordship is not felt in this position. Sl. 53's condition is the open question: Mars has no benefic beside it and Rahu does sit with it. The text gives no rule for a node, so the chart illustrates the gap in the verse rather than resolving it. The engine's yoga detector finds Malavya Yoga and a Dharma-Karmadhipati link between the Sun and Mercury in this chart; none of its flags concerns Mars. For the planet-level reading see Mars in the 5th house.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 5th lord in the 5th house in 247, or 8.2%. That is a property of the clock and the sky, not a count of people.
Neighbouring placements
There is no reverse placement, since the lord is home. The neighbours are the 5th lord in the 4th (Sl. 52: happiness, intelligence, a king, minister or preceptor) and the 5th lord in the 6th (Sl. 54: children who become like enemies, are lost, or are adopted). The other trine placements are the 5th lord in the 1st and in the 9th. When the 9th lord joins the 5th lord in the 5th, the engine's Raja Yoga of the 5th and 9th lords fires.
- Find the rising sign with the Lagna calculator.
- Open the birth chart calculator and see whether the 5th lord is in the 5th sign.
- List every planet joining it or aspecting the 5th, and note which are benefics and which malefics by Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10.
Questions about the 5th lord in the 5th
- What does BPHS say about the 5th lord in the 5th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 53: children if a benefic is related to the lord, none if a malefic is, and in either case a virtuous person dear to friends.
- Does a malefic with my 5th lord mean no children?
- That is the text's conditional claim about a combination, and it leaves "related", strength and mixed cases unstated. This app does not predict children, and no single verse is read alone in BPHS: Sl. 145-148 scale every result by strength.
- Is the 5th lord always strong in the 5th?
- By sign, yes: it is always in its own sign, moolatrikona or (for Taurus rising) possibly exalted. Combustion, retrograde motion and association can still qualify it.
- What if the 5th lord is itself a malefic, like Mars or Saturn?
- Sl. 53 speaks of a malefic related to the lord, not of the lord's own nature. The verse does not address the case directly.
- How common is it?
- 247 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.2%.
