In short
The 5th lord in the 7th house carries the ruler of children and intelligence into the house of marriage and partnership. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 55 reads it as an honourable, deeply religious person, happy through children and helpful to others. As a trine lord in an angle, it also meets one of the Ch. 34 conditions for a yoga, subject to the planet's other lordship.
What the placement means
The planet ruling the 5th sign from the Ascendant is the 5th house lord. Here it stands in the 7th sign, opposite the Ascendant: the 5th house's matters - intellect, children, devotion, the credit of past action - are brought into the house of the spouse, business partners and anyone a person deals with face to face.
Counted from the 5th, the 7th is the 3rd house. Counted from the Ascendant, the lord has left a trine for an angle, and both of these are among the houses Parashara singles out by name in Ch. 34: the 5th and 9th "specially for wealth", the 7th and 10th "specially for happiness".
The two houses involved
The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is a trikona, read for children, judgement, learning and devotional practice.
The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is a kendra, the house of marriage, partnerships, trade and dealings with others. BPHS Ch. 44 also lists it, with the 2nd, as a maraka house for longevity timing - a separate calculation the 7th-house page explains.
What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 55
Sl. 55 reads: "If Putr's Lord is in Yuvati Bhava, the native will be honourable, very religious, endowed with progenic happiness and be helpful to others." It is wholly favourable and carries no condition.
What is striking is what the verse leaves out. The 7th is the house of the spouse, and many Ch. 24 verses for lords entering the 7th talk about the wife. Sl. 55 does not. Its clauses are the 5th house's own - religion, children, honour - plus a social one, being "helpful to others", which is the closest the verse comes to the 7th's theme of other people. The 5th lord brings its own house's virtues outward rather than turning into a statement about marriage.
The reverse placement is similarly bright. Sl. 77, Yuvati's lord in Putr, gives a person who is honourable, "endowed with all (i.e. seven principal) virtues", always delighted and endowed with all kinds of wealth. Few pairs of houses in Ch. 24 read so favourably in both directions.
A trine lord in an angle
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 count "a Lord of a Kon is in a Kendr" among the relations that cause a yoga. The 5th lord in the 7th is that relation. Sl. 15 withholds it when the planet also owns an evil house. The engine's Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga check is narrower - the angle lord and trine lord conjunct or in mutual aspect - so the placement alone is not flagged. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale everything by strength and combine both lordships of a two-house planet. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse for this placement.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship table, the engine's dignity rule for the planet in the 7th sign with no chart supplied, and the planet's other house.
| Ascendant | 5th lord | 7th house sign | Sign-only dignity there | Other house it rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Sun | Libra | Debilitated | none |
| Taurus | Mercury | Scorpio | Neutral | 2nd |
| Gemini | Venus | Sagittarius | Neutral | 12th |
| Cancer | Mars | Capricorn | Exalted | 10th |
| Leo | Jupiter | Aquarius | Neutral | 8th |
| Virgo | Saturn | Pisces | Neutral | 6th |
| Libra | Saturn | Aries | Debilitated | 4th |
| Scorpio | Jupiter | Taurus | Enemy sign | 2nd |
| Sagittarius | Mars | Gemini | Enemy sign | 12th |
| Capricorn | Venus | Cancer | Enemy sign | 10th |
| Aquarius | Mercury | Leo | Friendly sign | 8th |
| Pisces | Moon | Virgo | Friendly sign | none |
The 7th sign is always the one opposite the Ascendant, so a planet that is strong in the rising sign is often weak here. Aries rising shows it most plainly: the Sun, exalted in Aries, is debilitated in Libra. Libra rising does the same to Saturn, which there is a yogakaraka (4th and 5th) debilitated in Aries. Cancer rising is the reverse case: Mars, yogakaraka as lord of the 5th and 10th, is exalted in Capricorn. Four rows are enemy signs, three neutral and two friendly.
Strength changes the reading
Because Sl. 55 is unconditional, the work of judging it falls entirely on the general rules. The ones that matter most here:
- Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share. With two yogakaraka rows at opposite ends (Cancer exalted, Libra debilitated), the same structural yoga can carry very different weight.
- Second lordship: the 8th (Leo, Aquarius), 6th (Virgo) or 12th (Gemini, Sagittarius) brings Ch. 34 Sl. 15 into play; the 10th or 4th makes the planet a yogakaraka.
- Association: the 7th receives the 7th aspect from the 1st, and special aspects from Mars (4th, 12th), Jupiter (3rd, 11th) and Saturn (5th, 10th) - see drishti.
The planet's own nature is a third layer. Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 call Jupiter and Venus benefics, the Sun, Mars and Saturn malefics, and Mercury neutral, taking the colour of its company. For Leo and Scorpio rising the planet bringing Sl. 55 into the 7th is Jupiter; for Virgo and Libra it is Saturn; for Aries the Sun; for Pisces the Moon. The lordship is identical in each case - a trine lord in an angle - but the planet-in-house pages describe the 7th very differently under each of them, and a reader weighing this placement usually reads both.
A debilitated lord raises a question the texts treat separately: whether the debilitation is cancelled by other factors. That is a distinct rule (see neecha bhanga), not part of Ch. 24, and this page does not apply it.
Worked example: Aries rising, the Sun debilitated in Libra
This chart came from the engine's deterministic search and can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 19 October 1985, 17:44 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Aries 2.43.
- With Aries rising, the 5th house is Leo, ruled by the Sun, which rules nothing else. The 7th is Libra.
- The Sun is in Libra at 2.4 degrees, Chitra pada 3, in the 7th. The engine marks it Debilitated; it is not retrograde.
- Mercury (Libra 19.55, Friendly sign) and Ketu (Libra 16.06) share the 7th. For Aries rising Mercury rules the 3rd and 6th.
- The 7th lord, Venus, is in Virgo in the 6th, also Debilitated - and Mercury and Venus occupy each other's signs.
Ch. 34 Sl. 19-22 names Jupiter and the Sun as the auspicious planets for Mesh Lagn, so the lordship side favours this 5th lord. The carrier is weak, though: a debilitated Sun, which Sl. 145-148 put at the "quarter" end, beside the 3rd-and-6th lord. The engine's yoga detector reports a Parivarthana Yoga between Mercury and Venus (the exchange just described), Sarala Yoga for Mars, and a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga between Venus and Mars; none of those is the Sun's. For the Sun's own reading in this house see Sun in the 7th house.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 5th lord in the 7th house in 254, or 8.5% - moments in time, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse, the 7th lord in the 5th, is Sl. 77; when both lords occupy each other's signs the exchange (parivartana) is itself on Ch. 34's list of yoga-forming relations. One house earlier, the 5th lord in the 6th (Sl. 54) is among the harshest Putr verses; one house later, the 5th lord in the 8th (Sl. 56) also reads restrictively. The 7th sits as a favourable angle between two dusthanas. The other angle placements, especially the 5th lord in the 10th, are the closest parallels.

Questions about the 5th lord in the 7th
- What does BPHS say about the 5th lord in the 7th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 55: honourable, very religious, happy through children and helpful to others. It is scaled by the lord's strength (Sl. 145-148).
- Does it say anything about marriage?
- No. Sl. 55 does not mention the spouse. Its themes are the 5th house's own - children, religion, honour - plus helpfulness to others.
- Is it a Raja Yoga?
- Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 count a trine lord in an angle as yoga-forming, unless the planet also owns an evil house (Sl. 15). This app's Kendra-Kona check needs conjunction or mutual aspect between the lords.
- Why is the 5th lord often weak in the 7th?
- Because the 7th sign is opposite the rising sign. For Aries and Libra rising the 5th lord is debilitated there; for Cancer rising it is exalted.
- The 7th is a maraka house. Does that change Sl. 55?
- Ch. 44 names the 7th a maraka house in the context of timing longevity, a separate calculation with its own rules. Sl. 55 contains nothing adverse, and this app does not make longevity predictions from a placement.
- How common is it?
- 254 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.5%. That counts moments in the engine's sample, not people.
