House lords

The lord of the 6th house placed in the 9th: the brief BPHS verse on trade and unsteady fortunes, the planet for each Ascendant, two rows where the 6th lord also owns the 9th, and an engine-computed chart.

In short

The 6th lord in the 9th house brings the ruler of enemies, debt and service into the house of fortune, dharma and the father. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 69 is brief and unusual: trade in wood and stone, and professional fortunes that rise and fall. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the same planet owns both houses, which changes the reading considerably.

What the placement means

The 6th house lord rules the 6th sign from the Ascendant. Placed in the 9th sign, it carries the 6th's themes - effort against opposition, service, illness, debt - into the house of fortune, religion and ethics, the father, teachers and long journeys.

Counted from the 6th, the 9th is the 4th house, an angle from the lord's own sign. Counted from the Ascendant, a dusthana lord has entered the most favoured trine. BPHS's verse for this placement is one of the most concrete in Ch. 24: instead of character traits, it names a trade.

The two houses involved

The 6th house (Ari Bhava) is a dusthana and upachaya: enemies, disease, debt, competition and service.

The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) is a trikona, the house of fortune, dharma, the father and the guru; with the 5th, "specially for wealth" in Ch. 34.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 69

Sl. 69 reads: "If Ari's Lord is in Dharm Bhava, the native will trade in wood and stones ('Pashan' also means poison) and will have fluctuating professional fortunes." The parenthesis is the translator's: the Sanskrit word read as "stones" can also mean poison.

The verse is short and almost entirely about livelihood. "Fluctuating professional fortunes" is the clearer clause: the 9th is fortune, and a 6th lord there makes it unsteady. The trade in wood and stones is the kind of specific occupational reading BPHS gives in a handful of verses (Sl. 84, for the 7th lord in the 12th, ties livelihood to clothes); this page reports it as the text's wording without converting it into a modern career category. BPHS gives no reason for it; this page does not invent one. The alternative reading of "Pashan" as poison is noted by the translator and is not developed further in the text.

The reverse is more pointed. Sl. 102, Dharm's lord in Ari, says the native "will enjoy meagre prosperity", will lack happiness from maternal relatives "and be always troubled by enemies". Between the two directions, BPHS reads the 6th-9th link as a drag on fortune: unsteady in Sl. 69, meagre in Sl. 102.

Lordship, strength and the 9th-house rows

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 call the owner of Ari a giver of evil effects and the lord of a Kon a giver of auspicious ones. For Cancer and Capricorn rising one planet holds both titles - Jupiter and Mercury rule the 6th and the 9th - and the placement is that planet in its own trine. Sl. 15 says a lord of a trine that also owns an evil house does not make a Raj Yog by mere relation. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 combine the two lordships, contrary results cancelling, and scale them by strength. The Bhrigu Sutras, discussing the Sun in the 6th, add that a weak 6th lord brings "destruction of enemies" - a principle that cuts against BPHS's scale for this one lordship. The Saravali has no verse here.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

The 6th lord and the 9th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

Capricorn rising puts Mercury in Virgo, which the engine reads as exalted, moolatrikona or own sign by degree; Cancer rising puts Jupiter in its own sign Pisces. In both, the 6th lord is also the 9th lord at home. Two rows are debilitated: Leo rising (Saturn, lord of the 6th and 7th, in Aries) and Scorpio rising (Mars, the Lagna and 6th lord, in Cancer). Libra and Sagittarius put the lord in an enemy sign.

The two own-house rows deserve a second look, because there Sl. 145-148 bring in a much brighter verse. For Cancer and Capricorn rising the planet in the 9th is also the 9th lord in its own house, which Ch. 24 Sl. 105 reads as "abundant fortunes, virtues and beauty" and much happiness from siblings. Sl. 69's "fluctuating professional fortunes" and Sl. 105's "abundant fortunes" are contrary on the same subject, so by the chapter's own rule they cancel, while the remaining clauses of each stand. That is the clearest case on this page of a second lordship changing what the placement means.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label sets the Sl. 145-148 share; the Bhrigu Sutras principle reads a weak 6th lord as the kinder case.
  • The other house: the 9th itself (Cancer, Capricorn), the Lagna (Taurus, Scorpio), the 5th (Virgo), the 7th (Leo) or an upachaya (the 3rd or 11th). Each has its own Ch. 24 verse for a lord in the 9th.
  • Association: the 9th is aspected from the 3rd, and specially by Mars (6th, 2nd), Jupiter (5th, 1st) and Saturn (7th, 12th) - see drishti.

The planet's nature also matters, because the 9th is the father's house and the texts describe each planet there in its own way. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary on Mars in the 9th is a good example: it reports a harsh sutra about the father and then lists exceptions, the first being Mars in the 9th as Lagna lord for Aries or Scorpio rising. That second case is exactly the 6th lord in the 9th for Scorpio rising, where Mars owns both the 1st and the 6th.

Worked example: Scorpio rising, Mars in Cancer

This chart was produced by the engine's deterministic search and can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 20 July 1985, 15:34 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Scorpio 12.3.

  • With Scorpio rising, Mars rules the 1st (Scorpio) and the 6th (Aries). The 9th is Cancer.
  • Mars is in Cancer at 3.29 degrees, Punarvasu pada 4, in the 9th. The engine marks it Debilitated and combust.
  • The Sun (Cancer 3.98, ruler of the 10th) and Mercury (Cancer 29.37, ruler of the 8th and 11th) share the 9th; Jupiter from the 3rd and Saturn from the 12th aspect it.
  • The 9th lord, the Moon, is in Leo in the 10th - and the Sun, 10th lord, is in Cancer: the 9th and 10th lords have exchanged signs.

Two verses apply to this Mars. As 6th lord in Dharm, Sl. 69. As Lagna lord in Dharm, Sl. 9: "fortunate, dear to people", skilful, eloquent, with wife, sons and wealth. On fortune the two are contrary and Sl. 145-148 say they cancel. Ch. 34 Sl. 35-36 call Mars neutral for Vrischik Lagn. The carrier is debilitated and combust - the "quarter" end of BPHS's scale, and the weak 6th lord the Bhrigu Sutras read kindly. The chart's strongest feature lies beside the placement rather than in it: the exchange of the 9th and 10th lords, which the engine reports as Parivarthana Yoga for the Sun and Moon, alongside a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga that includes Mars.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 6th lord in the 9th house in 240, or 8%. That counts moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 9th lord in the 6th (Sl. 102), is quoted above; together they form an exchange (parivartana) between a trine lord and a dusthana lord. One house earlier, the 6th lord in the 8th is both a harsh verse and Harsha Yoga; one house later, the 6th lord in the 10th (Sl. 70) gives fame among one's people, strain with the father and happiness abroad. The other trine placement is the 6th lord in the 5th.

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator.
  2. Check the birth chart for the 6th lord in the 9th sign, with its dignity.
  3. If you are Cancer or Capricorn rising, read the 9th lord in its own house first; the 6th lordship is the second strand.

Questions about the 6th lord in the 9th

What does BPHS say about the 6th lord in the 9th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 69: trade in wood and stones (or poison, per the translator's note) and fluctuating professional fortunes. Sl. 145-148 scale it by strength.
Should I take "trade in wood and stones" literally?
It is the verse's wording, and BPHS gives no explanation. This app does not turn it into a career prediction.
Which Ascendants make the 6th lord also the 9th lord?
Cancer (Jupiter) and Capricorn (Mercury). In both, the placement is the planet in its own 9th-house sign, strong by dignity, with a trine and a dusthana lordship combined.
Does the placement affect the father?
Sl. 69 does not mention the father. Planet-level texts sometimes do - the Bhrigu Sutras on Mars in the 9th, for example - with their own exceptions.
How common is it?
240 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8%.
