House lords

The lord of the 12th house placed in the 10th: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 142 on expenditure through authority and the father, the planet for all 12 Ascendants and an engine-computed Aquarius chart where the 12th lord is also the Lagna lord.

In short

The 12th lord in the 10th house is the ruler of expenditure placed in the angle of work, rank and public action. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 142 reads it mildly: expenditure through royal persons and only moderate happiness from the father. By sign the table leans weak, with five enemy-sign rows and one debilitated, against two exalted rows.

What the placement means

"The 12th lord in the 10th house" is the lord of expenditure, loss and distant places standing in the house of work, authority and public deeds. The house of outflow carries its affairs into the angle of action.

The 10th is a Kendra. Counted from the 12th, the 10th is the 11th, the house of gains relative to loss. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) governs expenditure, losses, distant places and release.

The 10th house (Karma Bhava) governs work, status and deeds.

What BPHS says about the 12th lord in the 10th

Ch. 24 Sl. 142: if the lord of Vyaya is in the Karm Bhava, the native "will incur expenditure through royal persons" and will enjoy only moderate paternal bliss. The bphs-alt text agrees. It is one of the mildest unfavourable verses in the chapter: authority becomes a channel of expense, and the father, whom BPHS reads from the 10th in several verses, gives moderate rather than full happiness. This page reports it as the text's claim.

The reverse verse, Sl. 120 (the 10th lord in the 12th), says almost the same thing from the other side: spending "through royal abodes", fear from enemies and worry despite skill. BPHS reads the 10th-12th link as a cost attached to authority whichever lord moves. Sl. 145-148 scale both: full, half or a quarter by strength, both lordships read for a planet owning two houses.

A 12th lord in an angle

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 leave the 12th lord to its associations and add that benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic effects while malefics owning them do not stay inauspicious. The 12th lord is itself a Kendra lord for three Ascendants: Taurus and Scorpio rising (the 7th) and Aquarius rising (the 1st). For Aquarius that changes the reading entirely: Saturn is the Lagna lord, and the Lagna lord in the 10th has its own favourable verse, Sl. 10 (paternal happiness, royal honour, fame and self-earned wealth), which contradicts Sl. 142 on the father. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus give no verse on the 12th lord in the 10th.

The 12th lord and the 10th-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity from natural relationships only.

Two rows are exalted: Gemini rising (Venus, owner of the 5th and 12th, in Pisces) and Leo rising (the Moon in Taurus). Aries rising puts Jupiter, owner of the 9th and 12th, debilitated in Capricorn. Five rows are enemy signs: Mercury in Cancer (Libra), Venus in Leo (Scorpio), Mars in Virgo (Sagittarius), Jupiter in Libra (Capricorn) and Saturn in Scorpio (Aquarius). The other four are neutral.

Malavya Yoga and the trine rows

Gemini rising forms Malavya Yoga in this app's sense: Venus exalted in a Kendra. The engine reports it whenever this placement occurs for that Ascendant, because the yoga comes from sign and house, not lordship. Venus there also owns the 5th, so Sl. 58 (the 5th lord in the 10th: "the native will enjoy a Raj Yog") applies alongside Sl. 142, and at full strength.

The other trine rows are weaker. For Aries rising Jupiter owns the 9th as well and is debilitated in Capricorn, so the 9th lord's royal verse for the 10th (Sl. 106) comes through at about a quarter with Sl. 142. For Libra rising Mercury holds the same two lordships in Cancer, an enemy sign. For Sagittarius rising Mars owns the 5th and 12th and is in Virgo, an enemy sign.

The angle and luminary rows

For Taurus rising Mars owns the 7th and 12th and stands in Aquarius, neutral; the 7th lord's verse for the 10th (Sl. 82: religious, with wealth and children, and a spouse who does not defer) applies alongside Sl. 142. For Scorpio rising Venus owns the same pair and stands in Leo, an enemy sign. For Cancer rising Mercury owns the 3rd and 12th, in Aries, neutral, and for Capricorn rising Jupiter owns them, in Libra, an enemy sign; the 3rd lord's verse for the 10th (Sl. 34) applies there. For Pisces rising Saturn owns the 11th and 12th and stands in Sagittarius, neutral, with Sl. 130 (the 11th lord in the 10th: honoured by the king, virtuous, truthful) alongside.

The luminary rows have nothing else to weigh. For Leo rising the Moon, exalted in Taurus, gives Sl. 142 fully; for Virgo rising the Sun, neutral in Gemini, gives it at a middle share. Because the verse is mild, those are the two rows in which the 12th lord in the 10th is read most nearly as the verse states it.

Strength changes the reading

Because Sl. 142 is mild and the second lordships are often favourable, strength under Sl. 145-148 mostly scales the offsetting verse. Dignity, combustion and company decide.

From the 10th, every graha aspects the 4th. A Mars 12th lord also aspects the 1st and the 5th; a Jupiter the 2nd and the 6th; a Saturn the 12th and the 7th, so a Saturn 12th lord in the 10th looks back at its own house.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 10th lord in the 12th (Sl. 120), reads as spending through royal abodes, fear from enemies and worry despite skill. Together the two are a parivartana between an angle and a dusthana. The 12th lord in the 9th (Sl. 141) concerns elders and the 12th lord in the 11th (Sl. 143) losses and dependence on others.

Worked example: Aquarius rising, Saturn in Scorpio

The engine's deterministic search found: 24 March 1985, 05:33 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Aquarius 21.28. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Aquarius rising the 12th house is Capricorn and the 12th lord is Saturn, which is also the Lagna lord (Aquarius).
  • The 10th house is Scorpio. Saturn is there at 4.24 degrees, Anuradha pada 1, "Enemy sign", and retrograde.
  • The 2nd house, Pisces, holds an exalted Venus, a debilitated Mercury and the Sun; the engine reports Raja Yoga and Kendra-Kona links there.
  • Jupiter, the 2nd and 11th lord, is debilitated in Capricorn, the 12th.

Here the 12th lord is the Lagna lord, so two Ch. 24 verses apply to one enemy-sign planet: Sl. 142 for the 12th lordship and Sl. 10 for the Lagna lordship. Both mention the father, one moderate and one favourable, and Sl. 145-148 say contrary results cancel. Saturn's aspects from the 10th fall on the 4th (its 7th), the 12th (its 3rd) and the 7th (its 10th), so it watches its own house of loss, where Jupiter is debilitated. On the chapter's scale an enemy-sign Saturn gives both verses at a reduced share.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 12th lord in the 10th house in 265, or 8.8%. That is a count of moments, not people.
