House lords

The lord of the 12th house placed in the 9th: BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 141, the 9th-12th exchange, two Ascendants where one planet owns both houses, the planet for all 12 Ascendants and an engine-computed Pisces chart.

In short

The 12th lord in the 9th house is the ruler of expenditure and loss placed in the trine of fortune, dharma and the father. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 141 reads it as disrespect toward elders, hostility even to friends and pursuit of one's own ends, the text's claim and not a forecast. For Aries and Libra rising one planet owns both the 9th and the 12th and sits in its own sign here.

What the placement means

"The 12th lord in the 9th house" is the lord of expenditure, loss and distant places standing in the house of fortune, the father, teachers and religious merit. The house of outflow carries its affairs into the strongest trikona.

Counted from the 12th, the 9th is the 10th, an angle relative to the house of loss. Counted the other way, the 12th is the 4th from the 9th. Houses are whole-sign from the Ascendant (whole-sign houses).

The two houses involved

The 12th house (Vyaya Bhava) governs expenditure, losses, distant places and release.

The 9th house (Dharma Bhava) governs fortune, the father, the guru and religious merit.

What BPHS says about the 12th lord in the 9th

Ch. 24 Sl. 141: if the lord of Vyaya is in the Dharm Bhava, the native "will dishonour his elders", will be inimical even to his friends, and will be "always intent on achieving his own ends". The bphs-alt text agrees. The verse takes the 9th house's respect for elders and teachers and inverts it: the house of loss, carried into the house of dharma, becomes a loss of regard. This page reports it as the text's claim and does not apply it to anyone.

Sl. 145-148 qualify it: full, half or a quarter by strength, and a planet owning two houses gives both lordships' results, contrary results cancelling. That second rule settles a good deal for this placement, because for two Ascendants the 12th lord is also the 9th lord.

When one planet owns the 9th and the 12th

For Aries rising Jupiter owns Sagittarius (the 9th) and Pisces (the 12th); for Libra rising Mercury owns Gemini (the 9th) and Virgo (the 12th). In both, the 12th lord in the 9th is the 9th lord at home in its own sign. BPHS's verse for the 9th lord in the 9th, Sl. 105, reads as abundant fortune, virtue, beauty and happiness from siblings, the opposite in tone of Sl. 141. Ch. 34 Sl. 7 says the planet owning the more significant house stalls the effects of the lesser, and a trine outranks the 12th; Sl. 145-148 say contrary results cancel. On both counts the 9th lordship is expected to lead in these two rows.

The editor's commentary in this corpus edition of the Bhrigu Sutras, discussing Rahu and Ketu in yogas, adds a caution in the other direction: if the 9th lord also owns the 8th or the 12th, the auspiciousness of the yoga is lost. That is a note about yogas, not about Sl. 141, and it is commentary rather than sutra. Saravali gives no verse on the 12th lord in the 9th.

Aries and Libra rising are the own-sign rows. Two more are exalted: Taurus rising (Mars, owner of the 7th and 12th, in Capricorn) and Aquarius rising (Saturn, the Lagna lord as well as the 12th lord, in Libra). Cancer rising puts Mercury, owner of the 3rd and 12th, debilitated in Pisces. Four rows are enemy signs: the Sun in Taurus (Virgo), Venus in Cancer (Scorpio), Jupiter in Virgo (Capricorn) and Saturn in Scorpio (Pisces). Gemini and Sagittarius rising give friendly signs.

Row by row

Aquarius rising is the case where the two lordships agree most: Saturn owns the 1st and 12th, and an exalted Lagna lord in the 9th has its own Ch. 24 verse (Sl. 9: fortunate, dear to people, skilful, eloquent) to set against Sl. 141. Taurus rising pairs the 12th lordship with the 7th, an angle; Mars exalted in Capricorn gives both fully, and Sl. 81 (the 7th lord in the 9th) applies alongside. For Gemini and Sagittarius rising the second lordship is the 5th: Venus in Aquarius and Mars in Leo, both friendly, with Sl. 57 (the 5th lord in the 9th, one of the chapter's strongest verses) applying too. Those are the rows in which Sl. 141 is most heavily offset.

Strength changes the reading

Because Sl. 141 is unfavourable, a strong 12th lord gives it more fully unless the second lordship cancels it, which in this placement it often does. Dignity, combustion and company decide the rest.

From the 9th, every graha aspects the 3rd. A Mars 12th lord also aspects the 12th and the 4th, so it looks back at its own house; a Jupiter the 1st and the 5th; a Saturn the 11th and the 6th.

How it sits beside the neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 9th lord in the 12th (Sl. 108), reads as loss of fortune through spending on auspicious acts and guests. Both together are a parivartana between the 9th and 12th lords, as in the worked example below; Ch. 42 Sl. 7 adds a penury rule that involves the 9th lord in the 12th, the other half of that exchange, with further conditions. The 12th lord in the 8th (Sl. 140) is favourable and the 12th lord in the 10th (Sl. 142) speaks of expenditure through authority.

Worked example: Pisces rising, Saturn in Scorpio

The engine's deterministic search found: 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Pisces 23.04. Anyone can re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.

  • With Pisces rising the 12th house is Aquarius and the 12th lord is Saturn, which also owns Capricorn, the 11th.
  • The 9th house is Scorpio. Saturn is there at 2.64 degrees, Vishakha pada 4, "Neutral" in this chart; Ketu shares Scorpio.
  • The 9th lord, Mars, is in Aquarius, the 12th. The engine reports a Parivarthana Yoga between Mars and Saturn.
  • The engine also reports Sarala Yoga (Venus, the 8th lord, in the 12th) and a Kendra-Kona link for Mercury and the Moon in the 10th.

This chart is the 9th-12th exchange exactly: the 12th lord in the 9th and the 9th lord in the 12th. Ch. 42 Sl. 7's further conditions are not met, because the 5th lord, the Moon, is in the 10th, not the 6th. Saturn is the table's enemy-sign row for Pisces, lifted to neutral by the chart, and its second lordship, the 11th, brings Sl. 129 (the 11th lord in the 9th: fortunate, skilful, honoured, affluent), which runs against Sl. 141. From the 9th Saturn aspects the 3rd, the 11th and the 6th.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 12th lord in the 9th house in 272, or 9.1%. That is a count of moments, not people.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Find your Ascendant with the Lagna calculator and the 12th lord from the table.
  2. Check whether it stands in the ninth sign in your birth chart.
  3. Note its second lordship; for Aries and Libra rising it is the 9th lord at home.
  4. Find the 9th lord; if it is in the 12th, the yoga calculator reports the exchange.

Questions about the 12th lord in the 9th

What does BPHS say about the 12th lord in the 9th house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 141: disrespect toward elders, hostility even to friends and pursuit of one's own ends. Sl. 145-148 scale this by strength and the other lordship. It is the text's claim, not a forecast.
What about Aries and Libra rising?
One planet owns both the 9th and the 12th and sits in its own 9th. BPHS Sl. 105 (the 9th lord in the 9th) then applies too, and Ch. 34 Sl. 7 lets the trine lordship lead.
Does it mean bad luck?
The verse speaks of conduct, not luck, and BPHS scales it by strength and the second lordship. This app does not forecast fortune from a placement.
Which Ascendants give an exalted 12th lord here?
Taurus (Mars in Capricorn) and Aquarius (Saturn in Libra). Cancer rising puts Mercury debilitated in Pisces.
What does the reverse placement say?
The 9th lord in the 12th (Sl. 108): loss of fortune through spending on auspicious acts and on guests.
Does a Mars 12th lord in the 9th aspect the 12th?
Yes. Mars aspects the 4th and 8th houses from itself as well as the 7th, and the 12th is the 4th from the 9th. That applies for Taurus rising (Mars exalted in Capricorn) and Sagittarius rising (Mars in Leo).
Is the 12th lord in the 9th always unfavourable?
BPHS Sl. 141 is an unfavourable verse, but for most Ascendants the 12th lord also owns a trine, an angle or the Lagna, whose own verse for the 9th is favourable. Sl. 145-148 say contrary results cancel.
How common is it?
It occurred in 272 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9.1%.
