In short
The 3rd lord in the 5th house moves the ruler of courage, effort and siblings into the trine of children, learning and intelligence. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 29 reads it as sons and a virtuous nature, adding a clause about a formidable spouse when the lord is touched by a malefic. As a 3rd lord in a trine it also meets Ch. 14's condition for happiness through siblings.
What the placement means
The 3rd house lord rules courage, effort, siblings and short journeys. In the 5th house it sits in the house of children, learning, intelligence and authority. Effort is placed in the house of what one produces and passes on: the next generation, and the work of the mind.
The 5th is a trikona, and BPHS Ch. 34 says trine lords give auspicious results and calls the 5th a house "specially for wealth". For a 3rd lord, the trine placement is also one of Ch. 14's favourable conditions for siblings. Against both stands Ch. 34's caution about owning the 3rd.
The two houses involved
The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is valour, servants, siblings, initiatory instruction and journeys in BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4.
The 5th house (Putra Bhava) is amulets, sacred formulae, learning, knowledge, sons, authority and fall from position in Ch. 11 Sl. 6. The house pages develop both.
What BPHS says about the 3rd lord in the 5th
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 29 says that with the 3rd lord in the 5th the native "will have sons and be virtuous". It then adds: if the 3rd lord is joined by or aspected by a malefic, the native will have a "formidable wife". bphs-alt.txt has the same text.
The main clause takes the 5th's signification (sons) and adds a general virtue. The conditional clause is unusual: it moves to the spouse, a 7th-house matter, and makes it depend on malefic contact with the 3rd lord. The text gives no reason for the link. "Formidable" is reported here as the text's word for a strong-willed spouse, without any judgement about anyone's marriage.
BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 reads the same placement for siblings: happiness through them follows if Mars or the 3rd lord is in an angle or a trine, and the 5th is a trine. For children, Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 reads the 5th lord and the Lagna lord rather than the 3rd lord, so Sl. 29's "sons" is the only statement tying the 3rd lord to them. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 keeps its caution that the owner of the 3rd gives evil effects, and Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 says to read both of the planet's lordships and scale by strength. The Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology in the corpus give no separate verse.
Set beside the reverse verse
The reverse, the 5th lord in the 3rd (Ch. 24 Sl. 51), reads: attached to his siblings, a tale-bearer, a miser, and intent on his own work. The two verses share a link to siblings from opposite directions: Sl. 51 makes the native attached to them; Sl. 29 is silent on them while Ch. 14 reads the placement as good for them. Sl. 51 is more critical in tone, Sl. 29 more generous. When both happen at once the two lords have exchanged signs, as in the worked example below.
Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant
The engine's lordship arithmetic and its sign-only dignity for the 3rd lord in the 5th sign:
| Ascendant | 3rd lord | Other house it rules | 5th house sign | Sign-only dignity there |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mercury | 6th (Virgo) | Leo | Friendly sign |
| Taurus | Moon | none | Virgo | Friendly sign |
| Gemini | Sun | none | Libra | Debilitated |
| Cancer | Mercury | 12th (Gemini) | Scorpio | Neutral |
| Leo | Venus | 10th (Taurus) | Sagittarius | Neutral |
| Virgo | Mars | 8th (Aries) | Capricorn | Exalted |
| Libra | Jupiter | 6th (Pisces) | Aquarius | Neutral |
| Scorpio | Saturn | 4th (Aquarius) | Pisces | Neutral |
| Sagittarius | Saturn | 2nd (Capricorn) | Aries | Debilitated |
| Capricorn | Jupiter | 12th (Sagittarius) | Taurus | Enemy sign |
| Aquarius | Mars | 10th (Scorpio) | Gemini | Enemy sign |
| Pisces | Venus | 8th (Libra) | Cancer | Enemy sign |
Virgo rising gives the one exaltation: Mars, lord of the 3rd and 8th, in Capricorn. Two rows give debilitation: Gemini rising (the Sun in Libra) and Sagittarius rising (Saturn, lord of the 2nd and 3rd, in Aries). Three give an enemy's sign (Capricorn: Jupiter in Taurus; Aquarius: Mars in Gemini; Pisces: Venus in Cancer), two a friendly one (Aries, Taurus) and four a neutral one. No Ascendant's 3rd lord also owns the 5th, so the own-sign case does not occur.
Because Sl. 29's conditional clause depends on malefic contact, the planet's own nature matters for how often it is likely to be in malefic company, but the verse speaks of a malefic joining or aspecting the 3rd lord, not of the 3rd lord being a malefic. For Gemini, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Aquarius rising the 3rd lord is itself a natural malefic (the Sun, Mars or Saturn); the verse does not say whether that counts.
Three Ascendants bring an angle lordship into the 5th along with the 3rd: Leo rising (Venus, lord of the 3rd and 10th), Aquarius rising (Mars, also lord of the 3rd and 10th) and Scorpio rising (Saturn, lord of the 3rd and 4th). An angle lord in a trine is one of the relationships BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 says produces a yoga. But Ch. 34 Sl. 15 adds a limit: if the lord of an angle or trine also owns an evil house, the relationships of Sl. 11-12 do not create a Raja Yoga by themselves, and Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 counts the 3rd among the houses whose ownership gives evil effects. So for these three Ascendants BPHS sets up the yoga and then qualifies it in the same chapter.
Strength changes the reading
The first check is the one Sl. 29 names: is a malefic conjunct with, or aspecting, the 3rd lord? Aspects on the 5th come from the 11th by the seventh-house aspect, Jupiter from the 1st and 9th, Mars from the 2nd and 10th, and Saturn from the 3rd and 8th. The second is dignity and combustion, which Sl. 145-148 uses to scale everything. The third is the second lordship: the 6th for Aries and Libra rising, the 10th for Leo and Aquarius, the 8th for Virgo and Pisces, the 12th for Cancer and Capricorn, the 4th for Scorpio, the 2nd for Sagittarius.
Worked example: Cancer rising, Mercury in Scorpio
The engine's deterministic search returned: 6 November 1985, 22:58 IST, New Delhi, Ascendant Cancer 10.13. Re-enter it in the birth chart calculator.
- Cancer rising makes Virgo the 3rd, so Mercury is the 3rd lord; it also owns Gemini, the 12th.
- Mercury is in Scorpio at 13.52 degrees, Anuradha pada 4: the 5th house. Not retrograde, not combust; the engine gives "Friendly sign".
- Saturn shares the 5th, at Scorpio 5.12, and is combust.
- The 5th lord, Mars, is in Virgo at 12.68 in the 3rd. Mercury is in Mars's sign and Mars in Mercury's: the two lords have exchanged signs, and the engine reports Parivartana Yoga.
Against Sl. 29 the chart meets the conditional clause: Saturn, a natural malefic, is joined with Mercury. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 adds that Mercury takes on the nature of its company, so here it leans malefic. The 3rd-5th exchange joins Sl. 29 and Sl. 51 in one chart. Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6's trine condition for siblings is met. Mercury also owns the 12th, so a 12th-house lordship travels into the 5th alongside the 3rd. Because Mercury owns the 3rd and 12th and Mars the 5th and 10th, only one side of the exchange owns an angle or trine, so the engine frames this Parivartana as mixed rather than favourable.
How often the placement occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 3rd lord in the 5th house in 267, or 8.9%. That describes sampled moments, not people.
Neighbouring placements
The reverse case is the 5th lord in the 3rd house; exchanges are covered under Parivartana Yoga. The adjacent placements are the 3rd lord in the 4th and the 3rd lord in the 6th; the other trine is the 3rd lord in the 9th. For the worked example's planet see Mercury in the 5th house. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.
Questions about the 3rd lord in the 5th house
- What does BPHS say about the 3rd lord in the 5th house?
- Ch. 24 Sl. 29: sons and a virtuous nature; if a malefic joins or aspects the 3rd lord, a formidable spouse.
- Is it good for siblings?
- BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 says a 3rd lord in a trine gives happiness through siblings, and the 5th is a trine.
- Does it say anything about children?
- Sl. 29 says "sons". BPHS reads children mainly from the 5th lord and Lagna lord (Ch. 16). This app does not forecast children.
- Which Ascendant gives the strongest version?
- Virgo rising, where Mars is exalted in Capricorn. Gemini and Sagittarius rising give debilitated 3rd lords.
- What if the 5th lord is in the 3rd at the same time?
- Then the 3rd and 5th lords have exchanged signs, as in this page's worked example. The engine reports Parivartana Yoga and frames it as favourable only when both planets also own an angle or trine.
- How common is it?
- 267 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.9%) in the engine's sample.
