House lords

The lord of the 7th house placed in the 3rd: the BPHS verse, how the planet's second lordship changes it Ascendant by Ascendant, the strength rules and an engine-computed chart with Mercury in Taurus.

In short

The 7th lord in the 3rd house moves the ruler of marriage and partnership into the house of siblings, courage and effort. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 75 is unexpected: it speaks not of the spouse but of children, reading difficulty in having a living son and the possibility of a daughter. The text scales that by strength and combines it with the planet's other lordship.

What the placement means

The 7th house lord is the planet ruling the sign opposite the Ascendant. Placed in the 3rd sign, it takes the 7th's business - the spouse, partners, agreements, trade - into the house of younger siblings, courage, initiative, communication and short journeys.

Counted from the 7th, the 3rd is the 9th house: the lord sits in the trine of fortune reckoned from its own house. Counted from the Ascendant, it moves from an angle into an upachaya. The surprise is in the verse itself, which leaves both houses' obvious themes aside and speaks about children.

The two houses involved

The 7th house (Yuvati Bhava) is a kendra: marriage, partnerships and dealings with others, and a maraka house in BPHS Ch. 44.

The 3rd house (Sahaja Bhava) is an upachaya: siblings, valour, effort, messages and servants. It is also, counted from the 5th, the 11th house - the house of gain for the house of children.

What BPHS says: Ch. 24 Sl. 75

Sl. 75 reads: "If Yuvati's Lord is in Sahaj Bhava, the native will face loss of children and sometimes with great difficulty there will exist a living son. There is also the possibility of birth of a daughter." The whole verse concerns children.

It is a harsh verse, and it is the text's statement about a combination, not a forecast about anyone's family; this app does not predict children. BPHS gives no reason why the lord of marriage in the house of siblings should be read for offspring. One possible line of reasoning is that the 3rd is the 11th from the 5th and the 7th lord brings its maraka character there, but that is this page's conjecture and is labelled as such. The verse's last clause, "the possibility of birth of a daughter", reflects the text's own era and framing.

The reverse is mild and unrelated to children. Sl. 31, Sahaj's lord in Yuvati, says the native "will be interested in serving the king", unhappy in boyhood but happy at the end of life. The two directions of the 3rd-7th link do not share a theme, which is itself informative: Ch. 24 is not symmetrical, and each verse must be read on its own.

Lordship and strength

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say benefics owning angles lose benefic force and malefics owning angles lose malefic force; the 7th lord is an angle lord. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale Sl. 75 by strength - full, half, a quarter - and combine both lordships of a two-house planet, contrary results cancelling. The Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras in this project's corpus have no verse for this placement.

Which planet it is, Ascendant by Ascendant

From the engine's lordship table, with the engine's dignity for the planet in the 3rd sign without a chart, and the planet's other house.

The 7th lord and the 3rd-house sign for each Ascendant (whole-sign houses), with the engine's sign-level dignity and the lord's second house.

This is a comfortable placement for most 7th lords: seven rows are friendly by sign. Two are exalted: Leo rising (Saturn, lord of the 6th and 7th, in Libra) and Aquarius rising (the Sun in Aries). One is debilitated: Taurus rising, where Mars, lord of the 7th and 12th, sits in Cancer.

The second lordship adds a second verse from Ch. 24 for a lord in Sahaj, and it varies widely. For Virgo and Pisces rising the planet is also the 4th lord, whose verse (Sl. 39) is bright: valorous, with servants, liberal, virtuous, charitable, with self-earned wealth and free of disease. For Gemini and Sagittarius it is also the 10th lord (Sl. 111: happiness from siblings and servants, valour, eloquence, truthfulness). For Aries and Libra it is the 2nd lord (Sl. 15: valorous and wise if related to a benefic, heterodox if to a malefic). For Taurus and Scorpio it is the 12th lord (Sl. 135: lacking fraternal bliss). For Cancer it is the 8th lord (Sl. 87), for Leo the 6th lord (Sl. 63), both adverse. Sl. 145-148 combine whichever applies with Sl. 75.

Strength changes the reading

  • Dignity: the engine's dignity label for the share of Sl. 75.
  • Nature: by Ch. 34, a benefic 7th lord (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury) is weakened in benefic quality by owning an angle, a malefic one (Mars, Saturn, the Sun) softened.
  • Association: the 3rd is aspected from the 9th, and specially by Mars (12th, 8th), Jupiter (11th, 7th) and Saturn (1st, 6th) - see drishti.

For a verse about children, a reader would also look at the 5th house and its lord, which Sl. 75 does not mention; and for anything about the spouse, BPHS Ch. 7 points to the Navamsa. The planet-in-house pages - Mercury in the 3rd, Saturn in the 3rd - describe the planet in the house without lordship.

It is also worth being clear about what Sl. 75 does not do. It does not name a condition - no benefic or malefic clause, no exception for exaltation - so it cannot be switched off by any single feature of a chart. Everything that qualifies it comes from outside the verse: the chapter's closing rule on strength, the second lordship, the planet's nature under Ch. 34, and the rest of the chart. That is the general shape of Ch. 24, and this verse shows it clearly because its subject is so far from either house's usual meaning.

Worked example: Pisces rising, Mercury in Taurus

This chart came from the engine's deterministic search and can be re-entered in the birth chart calculator: 5 June 1985, 02:29 IST, New Delhi. The Ascendant is Pisces 27.77.

  • With Pisces rising, the 7th house is Virgo and the 4th is Gemini; Mercury rules both - two angles.
  • Mercury is in Taurus at 17.17 degrees, Rohini pada 3, in the 3rd. The engine marks it Friendly sign and combust.
  • The Sun, lord of the 6th for Pisces rising, sits beside it at Taurus 20.51.
  • Jupiter, the Lagna lord, is in Capricorn in the 11th and aspects the 3rd by its special 5th-house aspect. The 3rd lord, Venus, is in Aries in the 2nd.

Mercury carries two verses: Sl. 75 for the 7th lord in Sahaj and Sl. 39 for the 4th lord in Sahaj. They speak of different subjects - children on one side, valour, servants and wealth on the other - so Sl. 145-148's rule for "varied" results applies: both stand, each at Mercury's strength. Ch. 34 Sl. 43-44 list Mercury among the malefics and "killers" for Meen Lagn, which reflects its ownership of two angles (and the 7th's maraka role). Mercury is combust beside the 6th lord, and the Lagna lord aspects the house. The engine's yoga detector reports Vimala Yoga for Saturn and several Moon-based yogas, none naming Mercury.

How often the placement occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine found the 7th lord in the 3rd house in 232, or 7.7%. That counts moments, not people.

Neighbouring placements

The reverse, the 3rd lord in the 7th (Sl. 31), is summarised above; both at once would be an exchange (parivartana). One house back, the 7th lord in the 2nd (Sl. 74) brings wealth through the spouse; one house on, the 7th lord in the 4th (Sl. 76) speaks of a spouse not under the native's control. The 7th lord's other children-related verse is the 7th lord in the 11th (Sl. 83).

Questions about the 7th lord in the 3rd

What does BPHS say about the 7th lord in the 3rd house?
Ch. 24 Sl. 75: loss of children, a living son only with difficulty, and the possibility of a daughter. It is the text's statement about a combination, scaled by strength; this app does not predict children.
Why does a 7th-lord verse talk about children?
BPHS does not say. This page notes that the 3rd is the 11th from the 5th, but that is a conjecture, not the text's explanation.
Does the verse say anything about marriage?
No. For the spouse, BPHS also points to the Navamsa (Ch. 7), and other 7th-lord verses speak of marriage directly.
Which Ascendants give the strongest lord here?
Leo (Saturn exalted in Libra) and Aquarius (the Sun exalted in Aries). Taurus gives Mars debilitated in Cancer.
Can the second lordship outweigh Sl. 75?
BPHS Sl. 145-148 say contrary results cancel and varied results both occur. The second verse for a lord in the 3rd (for example Sl. 39 for a 4th lord, or Sl. 111 for a 10th lord) mostly concerns other subjects, so it sits beside Sl. 75 rather than cancelling it.
How common is it?
232 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.7%. That counts moments in the engine's sample, not people.
