In short

Trika is BPHS's group name for the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, the same three it also calls Dusthana. This app has one list for them and uses it two ways: a planet there is not graded favourable in house and dasha readings, and a Trika lord placed in a Trika house forms Harsha, Sarala or Vimala Yoga.

What the term means

Trika means "a group of three". In house terms it is the trio of the 6th, 8th and 12th bhavas from the Ascendant. It is not a different set from the Dusthanas: the two words name the same three houses, and pages on this site use them interchangeably. "Trika lord" means the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th, which depends on the rising sign.

Where the term comes from

BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 gives the three houses three names at once: "Ari, Randhr and Vyaya are Trikas, Dusthan, or malefic Bhavas". The same passage says association with the Trikas brings harm, which is the text's claim about the houses, not a reading of any one chart. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 treats their lords unevenly: the effects of the 8th and 12th lords "will depend on their association", while the 6th lord is listed with the 3rd and 11th lords as giving evil effects.

How this app uses it

The engine keeps one constant for these houses, under the name Dusthana, so everything the Dusthana page describes applies here: the strength table's "dusthana house" label, and the rule that a planet in the 6th, 8th or 12th is not graded favourable in planet-in-house and Mahadasha readings.

The word Trika appears in the code in one place, the Vipareeta Raja Yoga test. For each of the three houses the engine finds its lord and checks whether that lord sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th. If the 6th lord does, it reports Harsha Yoga; the 8th lord, Sarala Yoga; the 12th lord, Vimala Yoga. The engine's comment records that it takes this rule from the case studies in Advanced Predictive Astrology, Vol. 1, which name the yoga for a Trika lord in another Trika house, rather than from a single sloka. The yoga is read as a difficult house's matters turning into resilience; it is a condition the chart meets, not a promise.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
