In short
Panchadha maitri is the fivefold relationship between two grahas in a chart: great friend, friend, neutral, enemy or great enemy, found by combining their natural friendship with their temporary friendship in that chart. This app uses it to decide whether a planet stands in a friendly, neutral or enemy sign.
What the term means
Panchadha means "fivefold". The fivefold relation is the working friendship between two grahas in a particular chart. It has two inputs: the fixed natural relation (friend, neutral or enemy) and the chart's temporary relation (friend or enemy). Together they give one of five grades.
Where the term comes from
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58 sets out the combination and closes by telling the astrologer to judge the chart accordingly. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 31, "Five Kinds of Considerations of Relationship", gives the same five outcomes.
How this app uses it
| Natural | Temporary | Fivefold result | Dignity step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friend | Friend | Great Friend | Friendly sign |
| Neutral | Friend | Friend | Friendly sign |
| Friend | Enemy | Neutral | Neutral |
| Enemy | Friend | Neutral | Neutral |
| Neutral | Enemy | Enemy | Enemy sign |
| Enemy | Enemy | Great Enemy | Enemy sign |
- The relation is taken between the planet and the lord of the sign it occupies, after the exaltation, Moolatrikona, debilitation and own-sign tests. The two "great" grades are kept apart in the calculation but share a dignity label: Friendly sign, 6.25 of 10 for position, or Enemy sign, 0.
- In a 1985-06-05, 02:29 IST New Delhi chart, Venus is in Aries, Mars's sign. Mars is natural neutral to Venus and sits in the 3rd sign from it, a temporary friend, so Venus reads "Friendly sign".
- In a 1990-05-15, 10:30 IST Mumbai chart, the Moon is in Sagittarius, Jupiter's sign. Jupiter is natural neutral to the Moon but sits in the 7th sign from it, a temporary enemy, so the Moon reads "Enemy sign", scores 0 for position and bands Weak.
- Without a chart there is no temporary half, and the engine does not guess one: the natural relation is used alone. Both planets above would then read "Neutral".

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
