Planet in sign

Mars in Aries is Mars in its own sign, and in its first 12 degrees its Moolatrikona. This guide sets out what BPHS, Saravali and Bhrigu Sutras say, how this app's engine decides the dignity by degree, which aspects change the reading, and a fully worked chart.

In short

Mars in Aries is Mars in its own sign, and BPHS makes its first 12 degrees Moolatrikona and the rest simply its own house. Saravali reads the placement as valour and leadership, then changes the verdict according to which planet aspects it. The house Aries occupies, and what Mars rules from your Lagna, decide how that strength is used.

Mars in Aries is Mars at home. Aries is one of the two signs Mars rules, and the classical texts give its first 12 degrees a higher rank still, Moolatrikona. So the placement starts strong by every dignity rule in the corpus. What it does with that strength is a separate question, answered by the house Aries occupies in your chart, the houses Mars rules from your Lagna, and the planets that aspect it.

This page covers only the combination. For Mars as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - start with Mars in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its element, its three nakshatras and what rising Aries means - see Aries, Mesha Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about Mars in Aries specifically, how this app's engine labels it degree by degree, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.

Dignity: Moolatrikona, then own sign

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 states it in one sentence: Mangal has the first 12 degrees of Mesh as Mooltrikon, and the rest of the sign becomes simply his own house. Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24 gives the same boundary, up to 12 degrees of Aries, and the Mars chapter of Bhrigu Sutras repeats it: the first 12 degrees are Mooltrikona, the rest Swakshetra. On this point the three texts agree exactly. The terms have their own entries: Moolatrikona and Swakshetra (own sign).

Aries is not where Mars is exalted. All three texts put its exaltation (uchcha) in Capricorn, deepest at 28 degrees (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50), and its debilitation in Cancer, the 7th sign from Capricorn. Those cases have their own pages: Mars in Capricorn and Mars in Cancer. Mars's other own sign is Scorpio, which has no Moolatrikona band, so Mars in Scorpio is own sign throughout.

How the engine decides

The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the friendship between the planet and the sign's lord. For Mars the Moolatrikona table holds one row, Aries from 0 to 12 degrees. So a Mars at 11.9 degrees of Aries is labelled Moolatrikona and a Mars at 12.0 is labelled Own sign. Because Mars is itself the lord of Aries, the friendship test is never reached here, and no other planet's position can change the label. That makes Mars in Aries one of the few placements whose dignity you can read straight off the degree.

One difference from the text is worth knowing. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 grades the results: exaltation gives the full good effects, Moolatrikona three quarters, own sign half, a friend's sign a quarter. The engine's scoring gives Moolatrikona the same score as exaltation (2) and own sign a score of 1, and gives it a sthana strength of 10 against 7.5 for own sign. The ranking is the same; the gap between the steps is not. When your Kundali page calls a Mars at 5 degrees of Aries and a Mars at 20 degrees of Aries both favourable, that is why.

The three nakshatras Mars can occupy in Aries

Aries holds all four padas of Ashwini, all four of Bharani and the first pada of Krittika. The Moolatrikona band, 0 to 12 degrees, lies wholly inside Ashwini (0 to 13 degrees 20 minutes), so a Moolatrikona Mars is always an Ashwini Mars, and a Bharani or Krittika Mars in Aries is always own sign. The nakshatra pages go further: Ashwini, Bharani and Krittika.

What the texts say about Mars in Aries

Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 1-2

Saravali gives each sign one line for Mars, and the Aries line is one of the most generous in the chapter. In paraphrase: splendour, truthfulness, valour, a taste for war and for adventurous undertakings, leadership - as a king, the chief of an army, the head of a village or of a band - generosity, wealth in cattle and grain, and a fierce temper. The line closes with a remark about many relationships with women, which is the text's statement and is reported here only as that.

The contrast with the very next sign shows how much weight Saravali puts on dignity. Sl. 3-4 gives Mars in Taurus, a Venus sign, little wealth, harsh speech and quarrels with relatives. Same planet, one sign later, near-opposite verdict; see Mars in Taurus for that line in full, and Mars in Pisces for the sign before.

Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 25-30: the aspect lines

Saravali then reads Mars in its own signs, Aries or Scorpio, under the aspect of each other planet. These six lines matter more than the sign line, because they are where the verdict turns:

  • Aspected by the Sun: wealth, a spouse and children, a minister or a judge, fame and generosity.
  • Aspected by the Moon: the text turns harsh - estrangement from one's own people, few friends, jealousy, and a wounded body (what the text says, not medical advice).
  • Aspected by Mercury: dishonesty and strong appetites, in the text's words.
  • Aspected by Jupiter: learned, sweet-spoken, fortunate, dear to parents, very affluent - the best of the six.
  • Aspected by Venus: repeated losses of money on account of women, in the text's words.
  • Aspected by Saturn: able to hold off thieves without being valorous, few supporters.

Two readings follow. First, the sign does not settle the matter on its own: the same Saravali chapter that praises Mars in Aries gives a Moon, Mercury or Venus aspect a poor reading. Second, Jupiter and the Sun - both natural friends of Mars - give the best results, and Mercury, its natural enemy, one of the worst. The pattern follows the friendship table in Bhrigu Sutras' Mars chapter (friends Sun, Moon, Jupiter; enemy Mercury; Venus and Saturn neutral) everywhere except the Moon, which is a friend and still reads badly. The text gives no reason.

BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras

BPHS does not give a sign-by-sign line for Mars. What it does say about Mars in Aries comes through rules. Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2: Mangal in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra from the Lagna forms Ruchaka Yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas. So a Mars in Aries forms Ruchaka only for the four Lagnas that place Aries in a Kendra: Aries (1st), Cancer (10th), Libra (7th) and Capricorn (4th). For the other eight Lagnas the dignity is the same and the yoga is absent.

Bhrigu Sutras adds one worked case in its commentary on Mars in the 2nd house. Mars in Aries in the 2nd means a Pisces Lagna, so Mars rules the 2nd and the 9th from its own sign, and the commentator reads that as a strong Dhana Yoga: wealth, name and higher learning. It is a good example of the general point - the sign gives Mars its strength, and the Lagna decides which houses that strength serves.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara was searched for a line on Mars in Aries and none was found, so it is not cited here.

Where the texts agree, and where they part

  • Agreed: Aries is Mars's own sign, and its first 12 degrees are Moolatrikona (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54, Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 21-24, Bhrigu Sutras).
  • Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. BPHS weighs it by the Kendra test for Ruchaka; Saravali by the aspecting planet; Bhrigu Sutras by the Lagna and lordship.
  • Silent: BPHS has no character line for Mars in Aries as such. Saravali is the only text in the corpus that writes one.
  • Different scales: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 puts Moolatrikona a step below exaltation; this engine scores them equally.

What Mars rules from each Lagna, with Mars in Aries

Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, which are always six houses apart from each other counted one way and eight the other. Whole-sign houses make the table mechanical. The house column is where Aries falls; the planned house pages, such as Mars in the 1st house and Mars in the 5th house, take each case further.

Several of these rows also put Mars in a house that the popular Mangal Dosha rule counts. That rule is about the house, not the sign, and many classical cancellations turn on Mars being in its own sign. The essay Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not sets out the rule and its exceptions, and the Mangal Dosha calculator shows exactly what this engine flags for your chart.

How often Mars is in Aries

Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mars was in Aries in 237 of them, 7.9 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. It varies because Mars does not move through the zodiac evenly: when it turns retrograde it can stay in one sign for many months, and in other years it passes through in a few weeks. The Mars reference page covers its transit speed.

Worked example: 15 March 1985, 02:56 IST, New Delhi

An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Sagittarius rises at 23.1 degrees. Mars is at 6.13 degrees of Aries, in Ashwini pada 2, in the 5th house, not retrograde and not combust. At 6.13 degrees it is inside the 0-12 band, so the engine labels it Moolatrikona.

Lordship. For a Sagittarius Lagna, Aries is the 5th house and Scorpio the 12th, so Mars rules the 5th and the 12th and sits in the first of them. The 5th is a trine, not a Kendra, so by BPHS Ch. 75 there is no Ruchaka Yoga despite the Moolatrikona dignity. The 5th is also not among the houses named in BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47-49.

Aspects. Saravali's six aspect lines need a planet whose drishti reaches Aries. Using the aspect rule this engine applies - every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th - none of the seven grahas aspects the 5th here. The Sun in the 4th aspects the 10th; Jupiter in the 2nd aspects the 6th, 8th and 10th; Saturn in the 12th aspects the 2nd, 6th and 9th. So none of the Sl. 25-30 lines applies to this chart, and only the bare sign line of Sl. 1-2 does. That is a common outcome, and it is why checking the aspects comes before quoting the aspect lines.

Company. Rahu shares Aries with Mars, at 27.65 degrees, in Krittika. The two are about 21.5 degrees apart, so they occupy the same sign without being close in longitude. Saravali's Ch. 25 sign and aspect lines do not cover a node in the same sign, and this page does not add a reading the text does not give.

What the engine shows. On this chart's Kundali page the Mars row reads favourable: the dignity is Moolatrikona and the 5th is not a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th). The 12th-house row is read through Mars as that house's lord, so the same well-placed Mars also shapes how the 12th is read. Elsewhere on the same chart, Jupiter and Mercury are debilitated and Venus exalted - a reminder that one strong planet describes one part of a chart.

Checking Mars in Aries in your own chart

  1. Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Mars is in Aries and note its degree: below 12 is Moolatrikona, 12 or above is own sign.
  2. Note the house Aries occupies and the house Scorpio occupies: those are where Mars sits and what it rules.
  3. If Aries is your 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, check the Yogas list for Ruchaka.
  4. List any planet in the 7th from Aries (Libra), Jupiter in Leo or Sagittarius, Saturn in Aquarius or Cancer, and Mars itself cannot aspect its own sign. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 25-30 line into play.
  5. Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Mars Mahadasha page.

What this page does not do

It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.

Is Mars in Aries exalted?
No. Mars is exalted in Capricorn and debilitated in Cancer. In Aries it is in its own sign, and in the first 12 degrees its Moolatrikona, which BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 ranks just below exaltation. See Mars in Capricorn.
Why does the degree of Mars in Aries matter?
Because the Moolatrikona band ends at 12 degrees. Below it the engine labels Mars Moolatrikona, from 12 onward Own sign. BPHS gives the first three quarters of the good effects and the second half.
Does Mars in Aries always give Ruchaka Yoga?
No. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 also needs Mars in a Kendra from the Lagna, which with Mars in Aries happens only for Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn Lagnas.
Is Mars in Aries a sign of Mangal Dosha?
Not by the sign. Mangal Dosha is counted by house, and Aries can be any house. The Mangal Dosha calculator shows what this engine flags for your chart.
Can another planet change the dignity of Mars in Aries?
No. Mars is the lord of Aries, so the engine never reaches the friendship test. Other planets change the reading through aspect and company, as in Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 25-30, but not the label.
How common is Mars in Aries?
In this app's sample it was in Aries in 237 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.9 per cent. Mars's uneven speed makes the share vary from decade to decade.
