In short
Mars in Cancer is Mars in its sign of debilitation: BPHS places Mars's fall in Cancer, deepest at 28 degrees, and this app labels the whole sign Debilitated. Saravali reads the bare placement as hardship, then lifts it under a Jupiter or Saturn aspect. This engine computes no cancellation of debilitation, so the label stays whatever else the chart holds.
Mars in Cancer is the placement every dignity table in the corpus agrees on: it is where Mars falls. BPHS sets Mars's exaltation in Capricorn and its debilitation in the seventh sign from there, which is Cancer, with the deepest point at the same 28 degrees. A fiery, outward-driving graha in a watery sign ruled by the Moon is the classical picture of a planet out of its element.
Debilitation is a measure of how much of a planet's good effects the texts expect it to deliver, not a verdict on a person. The texts themselves go on to qualify it - by aspect, by the house it occupies and by what it rules - and this page sets out exactly where they do, and where this app's engine does and does not follow.
This page covers only the combination. For Mars as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - see Mars in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its element, its nakshatras and what a rising Cancer means - see Cancer, Karka Rashi. This page is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.
Mars in Cancer: dignity, and how this app decides it
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 names Capricorn as Mars's exaltation (uchcha), deepest at 28 degrees, and says each planet's debilitation (neecha) lies in the seventh sign from its exaltation, with the same degree as the deepest fall. For Mars that is Cancer, deepest at 28. The Mars chapter of Bhrigu Sutras gives the same: debilitated in Cancer, lowest point at 28 degrees. The opposite case is on Mars in Capricorn, and Mars's own signs on Mars in Aries and Mars in Scorpio.
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 then grades the effects: full in exaltation, nil in debilitation, and "Inauspicious effects are quite reverse". The general idea is under dignity. Note what the text does not say here: it does not grade the fall degree by degree. The deep point is a single degree; the sign as a whole is the debilitation.
| Degrees of Cancer | Label in this engine (natural relation only) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Debilitated | Nil |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the relation between the planet and the sign's lord. For Mars, Cancer is the debilitation sign in the DIGNITY table, and the test covers the whole sign: every degree from 0 to 30 is labelled Debilitated, with a score of -2 and a sthana strength of 0. Because debilitation is tested before any relation with the sign lord, the Moon's position never changes the label. The 28-degree deep point is in the engine, but in a different place: the planetary-rays score from Saravali Ch. 36 measures distance from it, so a Mars at 28 degrees of Cancer scores the minimum there and one at 2 degrees scores a little more. The dignity label is the same for both.
The nakshatras Mars moves through in Cancer
Cancer holds the last pada of Punarvasu and all four padas of Pushya and of Ashlesha. The deep fall at 28 degrees falls in Ashlesha. Every one of these positions carries the same Debilitated label in this engine. The nakshatra pages go further: Punarvasu, Pushya and Ashlesha.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Cancer | Mars's label there (natural relation) |
|---|---|---|
| Punarvasu | 4 | Debilitated |
| Pushya | 1, 2, 3, 4 | Debilitated |
| Ashlesha | 1, 2, 3, 4 | Debilitated |
What the classical texts say about Mars in Cancer
Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 7-8
Saravali's line for Mars in Cancer is a picture of dependence and unease. In paraphrase: living in and eating at the homes of others, wealth that comes through farming or through water, comfort in childhood, and repeated distress. The line also mentions bodily deformity and illness; those are the text's statements, reported here as such and not as medical advice.
The lines either side differ sharply. Sl. 5-6 gives Mars in Gemini learning and skill; Sl. 9-10 gives Mars in Leo valour and impatience. Cancer, between them, is the only one of the three that the dignity tables call a fall, and Saravali's line matches that. See Mars in Gemini and Mars in Leo.
Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 43-48: the aspect lines
Unlike most signs, Cancer has its own set of aspect lines for Mars in Saravali rather than sharing them with a second sign. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Sun: splendour, valour and a judge's position, with a tendency to bilious complaints in the text's words.
- Aspected by the Moon: illness, mean conduct and misery, in the text's words - the poorest of the six.
- Aspected by Mercury: rejection by one's own people and a low standing, in the text's words.
- Aspected by Jupiter: fame, a minister's post, learning, generosity and wealth, with little taste for sensual pleasure.
- Aspected by Venus: grief, insult and loss of money through women, in the text's words.
- Aspected by Saturn: money through journeys over water, a king-like standing, playfulness and constant brightness.
So the text that gives the bare fall a hard line also names two aspects, Jupiter's and Saturn's, that turn it into wealth and standing. Jupiter is a friend of Mars and is itself exalted in Cancer. Saturn is neutral to Mars by the tables and reads well here too. The Moon, the lord of Cancer and a natural friend of Mars, gives the worst line - another case where the aspect lines do not follow the friendship table.
BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras
Readers often ask about Neecha Bhanga, the cancellation of debilitation. A search of the BPHS and Saravali texts used here finds no such rule, and this app computes none: a Mars in Cancer is reported as Debilitated whatever the rest of the chart holds. Saravali's aspect lines above are the nearest the corpus comes to a qualifying condition, and they qualify the reading, not the label.
Bhrigu Sutras touches the fall twice. In its commentary on Mars in the 4th house, a debilitated Mars joined by malefics or the 8th lord is read adversely for that house's matters. In its commentary on Mars in the 9th house, it lists Mars as Lagna lord in the 9th - which, for a Scorpio Lagna, means Mars in Cancer - among the cases where its adverse reading of Mars in the 9th does not apply. The text's ground is lordship, not dignity.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: Cancer is Mars's debilitation, deepest at 28 degrees (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50; Bhrigu Sutras, Mars chapter).
- Agreed: the fall is not the whole reading - Saravali qualifies it by aspect, Bhrigu Sutras by lordship.
- Silent: neither BPHS nor Saravali, as searched, gives a cancellation-of-debilitation rule; this engine applies none.
- Different scales: BPHS grades the sign as a whole; this engine uses the 28-degree point only in its planetary-rays score.
How Cancer changes the houses Mars rules and sits in
The Lagna decides which house Cancer is and which two houses Mars rules from there. Whole-sign houses make the mapping exact:
| Lagna | House of Mars (Cancer) | Mars also rules (Aries) | and (Scorpio) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 4th | 1st | 8th |
| Taurus | 3rd | 12th | 7th |
| Gemini | 2nd | 11th | 6th |
| Cancer | 1st | 10th | 5th |
| Leo | 12th | 9th | 4th |
| Virgo | 11th | 8th | 3rd |
| Libra | 10th | 7th | 2nd |
| Scorpio | 9th | 6th | 1st |
| Sagittarius | 8th | 5th | 12th |
| Capricorn | 7th | 4th | 11th |
| Aquarius | 6th | 3rd | 10th |
| Pisces | 5th | 2nd | 9th |
Two rows stand out. For a Cancer Lagna, Mars sits debilitated in the 1st as lord of the 5th and 10th; this app's yoga-karaka table (from BPHS Ch. 34) names Mars the yoga karaka for exactly that Lagna, so the planet's role and its dignity point different ways. For a Scorpio Lagna, Mars is the Lagna lord in the 9th - the Bhrigu Sutras case above. The house pages, such as Mars in the 1st house, take each case further.
Worked example: 20 July 1985, 15:34 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Scorpio rises at 12.3 degrees. Mars is at 3.29 degrees of Cancer, in Punarvasu pada 4, in the 9th house. It is flagged combust and not retrograde. The engine labels it Debilitated, as it would at any degree of Cancer.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Cancer 3.98 | Pushya (1) | 9 | Friendly sign |
| Moon | Leo 4.37 | Magha (2) | 10 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Cancer 3.29, combust | Punarvasu (4) | 9 | Debilitated |
| Mercury | Cancer 29.37 | Ashlesha (4) | 9 | Neutral |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 20.33, retrograde | Shravana (4) | 3 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Taurus 21.75 | Rohini (4) | 7 | Own sign |
| Saturn | Libra 27.82, retrograde | Vishakha (3) | 12 | Exalted |
| Rahu | Aries 20.89 | Bharani (3) | 6 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 20.89 | Vishakha (1) | 12 | Neutral |
Company. The Sun (3.98 degrees) and Mercury (29.37 degrees) share Cancer with Mars, so all three sit in the 9th. The Sun is less than a degree from Mars, which is why the engine flags Mars combust; dignityOf does not use that flag, so the label is unaffected. Saravali's Sl. 43-48 lines are for aspects, not conjunctions, so the Sun's line does not apply to a Sun in the same sign.
Lordship. For a Scorpio Lagna, Mars rules the 1st (Scorpio) and the 6th (Aries) and sits in the 9th - the very case Bhrigu Sutras lists as an exception to its adverse reading of Mars in the 9th.
Aspects. Using this engine's aspect rule, two grahas reach the 9th. Jupiter, at 20.33 degrees of Capricorn in the 3rd, casts its 7th-house aspect onto Cancer; Saturn, at 27.82 degrees of Libra in the 12th, casts its 10th-house aspect there. So both of Saravali's favourable aspect lines apply to this chart: Jupiter's (fame, learning, wealth) and Saturn's (money through water journeys, a high standing).
A symmetry worth noticing. Jupiter here is debilitated in Capricorn, the sign where Mars is exalted, while Mars is debilitated in Cancer, the sign where Jupiter is exalted. Each sits in the other's exaltation sign and they aspect each other. The engine labels both Debilitated and computes no exchange or cancellation from this; it is noted, not scored.
How often Mars is in Cancer
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mars was in Cancer in 304 of them, 10.1 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The share differs from sign to sign because Mars moves unevenly: a retrograde loop can hold it in one sign for months, and the sample years decide where those loops fall. Nothing in the sample says anything about the sign itself.
Checking Mars in Cancer in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Mars is in Cancer and read the dignity label in its row.
- Note the degree: the label is Debilitated at every degree, and only the planetary-rays score uses the distance from 28.
- List any planet in Capricorn (the 7th from Cancer), Jupiter in Scorpio or Pisces, and Saturn in Taurus or Libra. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 43-48 line into play.
- Note what Mars rules from your Lagna; for Cancer and Scorpio Lagnas especially, lordship pulls against the dignity.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Mars Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Mars debilitated in Cancer?
- Yes. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 places Mars's debilitation in Cancer, deepest at 28 degrees, and this app labels every degree of Cancer Debilitated for Mars.
- Does this app apply Neecha Bhanga to Mars in Cancer?
- No. The BPHS and Saravali texts used here give no cancellation rule, and the engine computes none. See Neecha Bhanga.
- Is a Mars at 28 degrees of Cancer worse than one at 2 degrees?
- The dignity label is the same. Only the planetary-rays score, from Saravali Ch. 36, measures distance from the 28-degree deep point.
- Which aspects improve Mars in Cancer in Saravali?
- Jupiter's and Saturn's. Ch. 25 Sl. 43-48 reads a Jupiter aspect as fame, learning and wealth, and a Saturn aspect as money through water journeys and high standing.
- Is Mars in Cancer the same as Mangal Dosha?
- No. Mangal Dosha is counted by house, not sign. The Mangal Dosha calculator shows what this engine flags.
- How common is Mars in Cancer?
- In this app's sample Mars was in Cancer in 304 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 10.1 per cent.
