In short
Mars in Gemini is Mars in the sign of Mercury, the one planet the classical tables make its natural enemy, so by nature it is an enemy's sign. In a real chart this app labels it Enemy sign or, when Mercury sits in a friendly position from Gemini, Neutral. Saravali nonetheless gives the placement one of its kinder lines: learning, skill in the arts and travel.
Mars in Gemini puts the graha of force and quick decision in a mutable air sign ruled by Mercury. Of all the planets, Mercury is the one the classical friendship tables set against Mars, so on the dignity scale Gemini is an enemy's sign for it. That is the starting point, not the conclusion: in a real chart this app weighs where Mercury actually sits, and the one text with a line for Mars in each sign reads Gemini far more generously than its dignity would suggest.
This page covers only the combination. For Mars as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - see Mars in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its element, its nakshatras and what a rising Gemini means - see Gemini, Mithuna Rashi. This page is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.
Mars in Gemini: dignity, and how this app decides it
Gemini is not one of Mars's special signs. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 puts its exaltation in Capricorn and its debilitation in Cancer, the very next sign; Sl. 51-54 gives its Moolatrikona as Aries 0-12; and its own signs (swakshetra) are Aries and Scorpio. Those placements are covered in Mars in Capricorn, Mars in Cancer and Mars in Aries.
So the label turns on Mercury. The Mars chapter of Bhrigu Sutras states it plainly - Mercury is Mars's enemy - and this app's natural-relation table agrees. Without a chart the engine therefore marks every degree of Gemini an Enemy sign, the grade BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 credits with no share of the good effects. The wider idea of graded strength is under dignity.
| Degrees of Gemini | Label in this engine (natural relation only) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Enemy sign | Nil in an enemy's sign |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the relation between the planet and the sign's lord. Gemini is not Mars's exaltation, Moolatrikona, debilitation or own sign, so every degree of it falls through to the last test: the relation between Mars and Mercury, the lord of Gemini. Mars counts Mercury as a natural enemy, so with no chart the answer is Enemy sign across all 30 degrees, with no boundary inside the sign.
Why the label can differ from chart to chart
The table above is the natural relation alone, which is what the engine uses when it has no chart. In a real chart it uses the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58: the natural relation (naisargika maitri) combined with a temporary one (tatkalika maitri). BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 makes two grahas temporary friends when one sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the other, and temporary enemies otherwise. So the question for Mars in Gemini is simply where Mercury sits, counted from Gemini.
| Natural relation, Mars to Mercury | Temporary relation (where Mercury sits from Mars) | Fivefold result (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58) | Label this engine shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enemy | Friend: 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12 | Neutral | Neutral |
| Enemy | Enemy: 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 | Great Enemy | Enemy sign |
Enemy by nature and friend by position cancel into Neutral; enemy both ways deepens into Great Enemy, which the engine shows as Enemy sign. So in a real chart Mars in Gemini reads Neutral when Mercury sits in Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Aquarius, Pisces or Taurus (the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from Gemini), and Enemy sign when Mercury is anywhere else. The engine simply reads where Mercury is in the chart.
The nakshatras Mars moves through in Gemini
Gemini holds the last two padas of Mrigashira, all four of Ardra and the first three of Punarvasu. The dignity of Mars does not change from one to the next; the nakshatra refines the reading rather than the label. The nakshatra pages go further: Mrigashira, Ardra and Punarvasu.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Gemini | Mars's label there (natural relation) |
|---|---|---|
| Mrigashira | 3, 4 | Enemy sign |
| Ardra | 1, 2, 3, 4 | Enemy sign |
| Punarvasu | 1, 2, 3 | Enemy sign |
What the classical texts say about Mars in Gemini
Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 5-6
Saravali's line for Mars in Gemini, in paraphrase: splendour, the ability to endure hardship, deep learning, knowledge of the rules of poetry, skill in many fine arts, a liking for travel to foreign lands, a virtuous disposition, high intelligence, affection for children and friends, and readiness for many kinds of work. There is no harsh clause in it.
That is striking set beside its neighbours. Sl. 3-4 gives Mars in Taurus a severe line and Sl. 7-8 gives Mars in Cancer, its debilitation, one of distress and dependence. Between them, in the sign of its natural enemy, Mars gets learning and craft. Saravali does not explain the choice; one plain reading is that the sign line describes Mars taking on Gemini's qualities rather than measuring Mars's strength. See Mars in Taurus and Mars in Cancer for the lines either side.
Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 37-42: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads Mars in either Mercury sign, Gemini or Virgo, under each aspect. The six lines in paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Sun: learning, wealth and courage, a liking for hills, forests and forts, and great strength.
- Aspected by the Moon: happiness, wealth and splendour, with a post in charge of a royal household.
- Aspected by Mercury: skill in writing, mathematics and poetry, much talk and sweet speech, work as a messenger or envoy, with untruthfulness and much hardship in the text's words.
- Aspected by Jupiter: a king's representative, bright and capable, travelling abroad as an envoy, and a leader.
- Aspected by Venus: great good fortune and comfort in food and clothing, with an occupation the text associates with women.
- Aspected by Saturn: wandering in mines, hills and forests, a living from farming, great valour, but poverty and hardship.
Mercury's own aspect - the enemy looking back at Mars in its own sign - gives a mixed line, half craft and half fault, rather than the worst one. The poorest reading here belongs to Saturn, and the Sun, Moon and Jupiter, all friends of Mars, give the best. On this pair of signs the aspect lines track the friendship table more closely than they do for Aries.
BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras
BPHS gives no character line for Mars in Gemini. It supplies the rules that make the label: Mercury's place in Mars's natural relations, the temporary relation of Ch. 3 Sl. 56, and their combination in Sl. 57-58. Its ratio of effects (Sl. 59-60) gives nothing to an enemy's sign and one eighth to an equal's, so the fivefold result makes a real difference to how a Gemini Mars is graded.
Bhrigu Sutras has no case of Mars in Gemini as such. Its commentary on Mars in the 4th house does read Mars joined with Mercury, "his enemy", unfavourably for home and property in that house - a reminder that the enmity is read through company as well as sign.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: Mercury is Mars's natural enemy (Bhrigu Sutras, Mars chapter; this engine's table), so Gemini is an enemy's sign by nature.
- Apart: the dignity scale rates Gemini low; Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 5-6 gives it a favourable character line.
- Agreed in shape: Saravali's aspect lines for Gemini favour the planets that are Mars's friends.
- Silent: BPHS has no sign-by-sign character line for Mars.
How Gemini changes the houses Mars rules and sits in
The Lagna, not the sign, decides which house Gemini is and which two houses Mars rules. Whole-sign houses make the mapping exact:
| Lagna | House of Mars (Gemini) | Mars also rules (Aries) | and (Scorpio) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 3rd | 1st | 8th |
| Taurus | 2nd | 12th | 7th |
| Gemini | 1st | 11th | 6th |
| Cancer | 12th | 10th | 5th |
| Leo | 11th | 9th | 4th |
| Virgo | 10th | 8th | 3rd |
| Libra | 9th | 7th | 2nd |
| Scorpio | 8th | 6th | 1st |
| Sagittarius | 7th | 5th | 12th |
| Capricorn | 6th | 4th | 11th |
| Aquarius | 5th | 3rd | 10th |
| Pisces | 4th | 2nd | 9th |
For a Leo Lagna, Gemini is the 11th, and Mars - lord of the 4th and 9th, which Bhrigu Sutras' commentary calls a yoga karaka for Leo - sits there. For a Virgo Lagna, Gemini is the 10th and Mars rules the 3rd and 8th. For a Pisces Lagna, as in the example below, Mars rules the 2nd and 9th from the 4th; this app's yoga-karaka table (from BPHS Ch. 34) names Mars a yoga karaka for Pisces. The house pages, such as Mars in the 11th house and Mars in the 10th house, go further.

An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Pisces rises at 27.77 degrees. Mars is at 3.31 degrees of Gemini, in Mrigashira pada 3, in the 4th house. It is flagged combust and not retrograde. The engine labels it Neutral - not Enemy sign - for the reason below.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Taurus 20.51 | Rohini (4) | 3 | Neutral |
| Moon | Sagittarius 13.77 | Purva Ashadha (1) | 10 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Gemini 3.31, combust | Mrigashira (3) | 4 | Neutral |
| Mercury | Taurus 17.17, combust | Rohini (3) | 3 | Friendly sign |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 23.36 | Dhanishta (1) | 11 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Aries 5.02 | Ashwini (2) | 2 | Friendly sign |
| Saturn | Libra 29.71, retrograde | Vishakha (3) | 8 | Exalted |
| Rahu | Aries 23.3 | Bharani (3) | 2 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 23.3 | Vishakha (1) | 8 | Neutral |
Dignity. Mercury, the lord of Gemini, is at 17.17 degrees of Taurus. Counted from Gemini, Taurus is the 12th sign, a temporary-friend position under BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56. Enemy by nature plus friend by position gives Neutral under Sl. 57-58. Had Mercury been in Gemini with Mars, the 1st from it, the label would have been Enemy sign.
Combustion. The Sun is at 20.51 degrees of Taurus, close enough that the engine flags Mars combust. dignityOf does not take combustion into account, so the label stays Neutral; combustion is reported alongside it, not folded into it.
Lordship. For a Pisces Lagna, Aries is the 2nd and Scorpio the 9th, so Mars rules the 2nd and 9th and sits in the 4th, a Kendra. Ruchaka does not arise: BPHS requires Mars in its own or exaltation sign for that.
Aspects. Using this engine's aspect rule, one graha reaches the 4th: the Moon, at 13.77 degrees of Sagittarius in the 10th, casts its 7th-house aspect onto Gemini. So Saravali's Moon line from Sl. 37-42 applies - happiness, wealth, a post in a royal household. Jupiter in the 11th aspects the 3rd, 5th and 7th; Saturn in the 8th aspects the 10th, 2nd and 5th; neither reaches the 4th.
How often Mars is in Gemini
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mars was in Gemini in 283 of them, 9.4 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The figure varies with the sample because Mars moves unevenly: a retrograde loop can hold it in one sign for months, and in other years it crosses a sign in weeks.
Checking Mars in Gemini in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Mars is in Gemini and read the dignity label in its row.
- Note where Mercury sits, counted from Gemini. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign makes the label Neutral; any other makes it Enemy sign.
- Note whether Mars is flagged combust. It does not change the dignity label in this engine.
- List any planet in Sagittarius (the 7th from Gemini), Jupiter in Aquarius or Libra, and Saturn in Aries or Virgo. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 37-42 aspect line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Mars Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Mars debilitated in Gemini?
- No. Mars is debilitated in Cancer, the next sign. Gemini is Mercury's sign, an enemy's sign for Mars by nature, which is a different and milder grade.
- Why does my chart show Mars in Gemini as Neutral?
- Because the engine uses the fivefold relation. If Mercury sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Gemini, it is a temporary friend, and natural enmity plus temporary friendship gives Neutral (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58).
- Does Saravali read Mars in Gemini badly?
- No. Ch. 25 Sl. 5-6 gives learning, skill in poetry and the arts, intelligence and travel. The dignity scale and the character line point in different directions here.
- Does combustion change the label of Mars in Gemini?
- Not in this engine. dignityOf decides the label from sign, degree and relations; combustion is a separate flag shown beside it.
- How common is Mars in Gemini?
- In this app's sample Mars was in Gemini in 283 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9.4 per cent.
