In short

Mars in Capricorn is Mars exalted: BPHS places Mars's exaltation in Capricorn, deepest at 28 degrees, and this app labels the whole sign Exalted. Saravali gives it one of the most favourable lines in its Mars chapter, and BPHS adds Ruchaka Yoga when Capricorn is a Kendra. The house it falls in and what Mars rules from the Lagna still decide how the strength is used.

Mars in Capricorn is Mars exalted. The cardinal earth sign of Saturn is, by every dignity table in the corpus, where Mars is at its strongest, with the deepest point at 28 degrees. It is the mirror of Cancer, seven signs away, where Mars falls.

Exaltation is the top of the dignity scale, not a guarantee. The texts themselves keep asking further questions - which planets aspect Mars, whether Capricorn is a Kendra, and what Mars rules from the Lagna - and one classical commentator explicitly doubts that an exalted Mars helps every Lagna. This page sets those questions out in order.

This page covers only the combination. For Mars as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - see Mars in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its element, its nakshatras and what a rising Capricorn means - see Capricorn, Makara Rashi. This page is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.

Mars in Capricorn: dignity, and how this app decides it

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 lists the exaltation signs of the seven grahas from the Sun onward, Mars's being Makar (Capricorn), with the deepest exaltation at 28 degrees, and places each planet's debilitation in the seventh sign, at the same degree. Bhrigu Sutras' Mars chapter agrees: exalted in Capricorn, highest point 28 degrees. The fall is covered on Mars in Cancer; Mars's Moolatrikona and own signs on Mars in Aries and Mars in Scorpio.

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 then gives the scale: exaltation fully good, Moolatrikona short of that by a quarter, own sign half, friend's sign a quarter. Exaltation is the only step with the full share. The general idea is under dignity.

How the engine decides

The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the relation between the planet and the sign's lord. Exaltation is the first test, and for Mars it covers the whole of Capricorn: every degree from 0 to 30 is labelled Exalted, with a score of 2 and a sthana strength of 10. Saturn, the lord of Capricorn, never enters into it, because the relation test comes last. The 28-degree point is used elsewhere: the planetary-rays score from Saravali Ch. 36 measures distance from Mars's deep debilitation at 28 degrees of Cancer, so it peaks exactly at 28 degrees of Capricorn. A Mars at 2 degrees and one at 28 degrees carry the same Exalted label but different ray scores.

The nakshatras Mars moves through in Capricorn

Capricorn holds the last three padas of Uttara Ashadha, all four of Shravana and the first two of Dhanishta. Each pada spans 3 degrees 20 minutes, so the last two padas cover the final 6 degrees 40 minutes of the sign, and the deep exaltation point at 28 degrees therefore falls in Dhanishta. The label is Exalted in every one of them. The nakshatra pages go further: Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Dhanishta.

What the classical texts say about Mars in Capricorn

Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 19-20

Saravali's line for Mars in Capricorn is among the most generous in the chapter. In paraphrase: wealth and comfort, an excellent disposition, fame, the command of an army or a throne, a good spouse, success in conflict, independence, a life in one's own country, the role of a protector, and virtue. There is no harsh clause in it.

It stands out from both neighbours. Sl. 17-18 gives Mars in Sagittarius a soldier's life with wounds and anger; Sl. 21-22 gives Mars in Aquarius one of the bleakest lines in the chapter. Here, unlike Scorpio, the character line and the dignity agree. See Mars in Sagittarius and Mars in Aquarius.

Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 61-66: the aspect lines

Saravali reads Mars in either Saturn sign, Capricorn or Aquarius, under each aspect. In paraphrase:

  • Aspected by the Sun: courage and sharpness, a large family and abundant wealth.
  • Aspected by the Moon: wealth and generosity with a fickle mind and unsteady friendships.
  • Aspected by Mercury: little wealth, strength or occupation, in the text's words - the weakest of the six.
  • Aspected by Jupiter: good looks, a regal manner, success in undertakings, long life and many relatives.
  • Aspected by Venus: many pleasures, a protective role towards women, and a combative streak.
  • Aspected by Saturn: a ruler's standing, great wealth, many children and learning, with little happiness and timidity in battle in the text's words.

Saturn, the lord of Capricorn, gives a line of high status shaded by unhappiness; Mercury, Mars's natural enemy, gives the weakest; Jupiter and the Sun give the most favourable. Even an exalted Mars, in Saravali's reading, takes much of its character from the planet that aspects it.

BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras

BPHS adds the yoga. Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2: Mars in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra from the Lagna forms Ruchaka Yoga. An exalted Mars therefore forms Ruchaka only for the four Lagnas that make Capricorn a Kendra: Capricorn (1st), Libra (4th), Cancer (7th) and Aries (10th).

Bhrigu Sutras' commentary weighs the exaltation house by house, by lordship. In the 2nd it means a Sagittarius Lagna, with the 5th lord exalted there, read as a strong Dhanayoga. In the 4th it means a Libra Lagna, Mars ruling the 2nd and 7th, read as a Dhana Yoga with Ruchaka. In the 11th it means a Pisces Lagna, Mars ruling the 2nd and 9th, read as a very powerful Dhanayoga. But in the 5th - a Virgo Lagna - the commentator says plainly that he does not agree an exalted Mars is good there, because it rules two bad houses, the 3rd and 8th.

That last remark is the clearest statement in the corpus that exaltation does not settle a reading on its own.

Where the texts agree, and where they part

  • Agreed: Capricorn is Mars's exaltation, deepest at 28 degrees (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50; Bhrigu Sutras, Mars chapter).
  • Agreed: Saravali's sign line (Sl. 19-20) is favourable, matching the dignity.
  • Qualified: Bhrigu Sutras' commentary doubts the benefit for a Virgo Lagna because of lordship; Saravali qualifies it by aspect; BPHS ties Ruchaka to a Kendra.
  • Different scales: BPHS grades the sign as a whole; this engine uses the 28-degree point only for the planetary-rays score.

How Capricorn changes the houses Mars rules and sits in

The Lagna decides which house Capricorn is and which two houses Mars rules. Whole-sign houses make the mapping exact:

Houses counted whole-sign from each Lagna, as this app's birth chart does. Ruchaka needs own or exaltation sign in a Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th).

The Ruchaka rows (Capricorn, Libra, Cancer, Aries) and the Bhrigu Sutras rows (Sagittarius, Libra, Virgo, Pisces) overlap only at Libra. The house pages, such as Mars in the 11th house, Mars in the 5th house and Mars in the 9th house, take each case further.

An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Taurus rises at 11.77 degrees. Mars is at 1.94 degrees of Capricorn, in Uttara Ashadha pada 2, in the 9th house, neither retrograde nor combust. The engine labels it Exalted.

Lordship. For a Taurus Lagna, Aries is the 12th and Scorpio the 7th, so Mars rules the 7th and 12th and sits exalted in the 9th, a trine. The 9th is not a Kendra, so BPHS Ch. 75 gives no Ruchaka Yoga here, exaltation notwithstanding. None of the Bhrigu Sutras cases above is a Taurus Lagna.

Aspects. Using this engine's aspect rule, one graha reaches the 9th: Saturn, at 11.66 degrees of Scorpio in the 7th, casts its 3rd-house aspect onto Capricorn. So Saravali's Saturn line from Sl. 61-66 applies - high standing, wealth, learning and children, shaded in the text by little happiness. Jupiter, retrograde in the 10th, aspects the 4th, 2nd and 6th, not the 9th; the Moon in the 4th aspects the 10th.

Rays. At 1.94 degrees, this Mars is about 26 degrees short of the deep exaltation point, so its planetary-rays score is below the maximum even though the label is Exalted. That is the one place the degree matters in this engine.

How often Mars is in Capricorn

Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mars was in Capricorn in 205 of them, 6.8 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The share differs from sign to sign because Mars moves unevenly - a retrograde loop can hold it in one sign for months - and the sample years decide where those loops fall.

Checking Mars in Capricorn in your own chart

  1. Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Mars is in Capricorn and read the dignity label in its row.
  2. Note the house Capricorn occupies. If it is the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th, check the Yogas list for Ruchaka.
  3. Note the houses Aries and Scorpio occupy; for a Virgo Lagna especially, Bhrigu Sutras' commentary weighs lordship against the exaltation.
  4. List any planet in Cancer (the 7th from Capricorn), Jupiter in Taurus or Virgo, and Saturn in Scorpio or Aries. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 61-66 line into play.
  5. Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Mars Mahadasha page.

What this page does not do

It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.

Is Mars exalted in Capricorn?
Yes. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 places Mars's exaltation in Capricorn, deepest at 28 degrees, and this app labels every degree of Capricorn Exalted for Mars.
Does the degree of Mars in Capricorn matter?
Not for the label. It matters only for the planetary-rays score, which peaks at 28 degrees of Capricorn.
Does exalted Mars always form Ruchaka Yoga?
No. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 also needs a Kendra from the Lagna, which happens only for Capricorn, Libra, Cancer and Aries Lagnas.
Is an exalted Mars good for every Lagna?
The texts do not say so. Bhrigu Sutras' commentator explicitly doubts it for a Virgo Lagna, where Mars rules the 3rd and 8th.
Can Saturn's position change the label of Mars in Capricorn?
No. Exaltation is tested first, so the relation with Saturn, the lord of Capricorn, is never reached. Saturn can change the reading through aspect, per Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 61-66.
How common is Mars in Capricorn?
In this app's sample Mars was in Capricorn in 205 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 6.8 per cent.
