In short
Mars in Scorpio is Mars in its own sign at every degree: Scorpio has no Moolatrikona band for Mars, so this app labels the whole sign Own sign. BPHS credits that with half the good effects, and Mars here forms Ruchaka Yoga when Scorpio is a Kendra. Saravali, though, gives Scorpio a far harsher character line than Aries, and lets the aspecting planet change it.
Mars in Scorpio is Mars at home in its second sign, the fixed water sign it rules alongside Aries. Every dignity rule in the corpus agrees that this is own sign, and unlike Aries there is no Moolatrikona band to split it: the whole of Scorpio carries the same label.
The interest of the placement is the gap between the dignity and the classical character reading. Saravali, which praises Mars in Aries, gives Mars in Scorpio one of the harshest lines in its chapter. Same planet, same dignity, very different words - which is a useful caution against reading strength as goodness.
This page covers only the combination. For Mars as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - see Mars in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its element, its nakshatras and what a rising Scorpio means - see Scorpio, Vrishchika Rashi. This page is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.
Mars in Scorpio: dignity, and how this app decides it
The Mars chapter of Bhrigu Sutras says it in one line: the first 12 degrees of Aries are Mars's Moolatrikona, the rest of Aries its Swakshetra, and "The whole of Scorpio is also his Swakshetra". BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 gives Mars a Moolatrikona only in Aries. Its exaltation is Capricorn and its debilitation Cancer (Sl. 49-50); see Mars in Capricorn and Mars in Cancer.
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 credits a planet in its own house with half the good effects - below exaltation (full) and Moolatrikona (three quarters), above a friend's sign (a quarter). So Mars in Scorpio sits on the same step as the later degrees of Mars in Aries. The scale is under dignity.
| Degrees of Scorpio | Label in this engine (natural relation only) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Own sign | One half |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the relation between the planet and the sign's lord. For Mars, Scorpio is not the exaltation sign, has no Moolatrikona row, and is not the debilitation sign, so the fourth test - own sign - decides it at every degree: Own sign, with a score of 1 and a sthana strength of 7.5. Because Mars is itself the lord of Scorpio, the relation test is never reached, and no other planet's position can change the label.
The nakshatras Mars moves through in Scorpio
Scorpio holds the last pada of Vishakha, all four of Anuradha and all four of Jyeshtha. The label is Own sign in each. The nakshatra pages go further: Vishakha, Anuradha and Jyeshtha.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Scorpio | Mars's label there (natural relation) |
|---|---|---|
| Vishakha | 4 | Own sign |
| Anuradha | 1, 2, 3, 4 | Own sign |
| Jyeshtha | 1, 2, 3, 4 | Own sign |
What the classical texts say about Mars in Scorpio
Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 15-16
Saravali's line for Mars in Scorpio mixes capability with severe charges. In paraphrase: attachment to trade, an interest in Vedic learning, skill in one's duties, a taste for conflict, lands, sons and a spouse - alongside a long list of moral faults, and exposure to fire, weapons and wounds. The harsher clauses are the text's statements, summarised here and not repeated in full; the exposure clause is not medical advice.
The contrast with Aries, Mars's other own sign, is the point. Sl. 1-2 gives Mars in Aries truthfulness, leadership and generosity. The dignity is the same step on the BPHS scale, yet the character lines are far apart. Saravali does not explain the difference. The next sign, Sl. 17-18, gives Mars in Sagittarius a warrior's line with wounds and harsh speech; see Mars in Sagittarius.
Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 25-30: the aspect lines
Saravali reads Mars in either own sign, Aries or Scorpio, under each aspect, so Scorpio shares these lines with Aries. In brief:
- Sun: wealth, a spouse and children, a minister's or judge's post, fame and generosity.
- Moon: estrangement from one's own people, few friends and jealousy, with a wound and a clause about the mother in the text's words.
- Mercury: dishonesty and strong appetites, in the text's words.
- Jupiter: learning, sweet speech, good fortune, the love of parents and great wealth - the best of the six.
- Venus: repeated loss of money on account of women, in the text's words.
- Saturn: able to hold off thieves without great valour, with few supporters.
For Scorpio these lines matter a good deal, since they are the text's own way of qualifying a harsh sign line: a Sun or Jupiter aspect reads very differently from the bare placement.
BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras
BPHS adds a yoga. Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2: Mars in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra from the Lagna forms Ruchaka Yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas. So Mars in Scorpio forms Ruchaka for the four Lagnas that make Scorpio a Kendra: Scorpio (1st), Leo (4th), Taurus (7th) and Aquarius (10th). For the other eight the dignity is the same and the yoga is absent.
Bhrigu Sutras' commentary returns to Mars in Scorpio house after house, and each time the reason is lordship. In the 2nd it means a Libra Lagna, Mars ruling the 2nd and 7th, read as gains through the spouse. In the 4th it means a Leo Lagna, for which the commentator calls Mars a yoga karaka, ruling the 4th and 9th, read as a strong Dhana Yoga with Ruchaka as well. In the 5th it means a Cancer Lagna, Mars ruling the 5th and 10th, read as improving both. In the 9th it means a Pisces Lagna, Mars ruling the 2nd and 9th, listed among the cases that give a powerful Rajayoga. In the 10th, Mars in its own sign is read as a Rajayoga as well.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: Scorpio is Mars's own sign at every degree, with no Moolatrikona band (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54; Bhrigu Sutras, Mars chapter).
- Apart: Bhrigu Sutras' commentary reads Mars in Scorpio favourably in house after house; Saravali's bare sign line is harsh.
- Agreed: the reading turns on more than dignity - aspects in Saravali, Kendra position in BPHS Ch. 75, lordship in Bhrigu Sutras.
- Silent: BPHS has no sign-by-sign character line for Mars.
How Scorpio changes the houses Mars rules and sits in
The Lagna decides which house Scorpio is and which other house Mars rules (Aries, always six signs away). Whole-sign houses make the mapping exact:
| Lagna | House of Mars (Scorpio) | Mars also rules (Aries) | and (Scorpio) | Ruchaka by BPHS Ch. 75 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 8th | 1st | 8th | No |
| Taurus | 7th | 12th | 7th | Yes |
| Gemini | 6th | 11th | 6th | No |
| Cancer | 5th | 10th | 5th | No |
| Leo | 4th | 9th | 4th | Yes |
| Virgo | 3rd | 8th | 3rd | No |
| Libra | 2nd | 7th | 2nd | No |
| Scorpio | 1st | 6th | 1st | Yes |
| Sagittarius | 12th | 5th | 12th | No |
| Capricorn | 11th | 4th | 11th | No |
| Aquarius | 10th | 3rd | 10th | Yes |
| Pisces | 9th | 2nd | 9th | No |
The four Ruchaka rows and the Bhrigu Sutras cases overlap: Leo (4th) and Taurus (7th) are both. The house pages, such as Mars in the 4th house, Mars in the 5th house and Mars in the 3rd house, take each case further.
Several rows also put Mars in a house the popular Mangal Dosha rule counts. That rule is about the house, not the sign; the essay Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not sets out the rule and its exceptions.
Worked example: 27 January 1986, 22:31 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Virgo rises at 14.39 degrees. Mars is at 3.05 degrees of Scorpio, in Vishakha pada 4, in the 3rd house, neither retrograde nor combust. The engine labels it Own sign.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Capricorn 13.81 | Shravana (2) | 5 | Neutral |
| Moon | Leo 4.21 | Magha (2) | 12 | Neutral |
| Mars | Scorpio 3.05 | Vishakha (4) | 3 | Own sign |
| Mercury | Capricorn 10.83, combust | Shravana (1) | 5 | Friendly sign |
| Jupiter | Aquarius 0.68 | Dhanishta (3) | 6 | Friendly sign |
| Venus | Capricorn 15.75, combust | Shravana (2) | 5 | Friendly sign |
| Saturn | Scorpio 13.95 | Anuradha (4) | 3 | Enemy sign |
| Rahu | Aries 10.75 | Ashwini (4) | 8 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 10.75 | Swati (2) | 2 | Neutral |
Lordship. For a Virgo Lagna, Scorpio is the 3rd and Aries the 8th, so Mars rules the 3rd and 8th and sits in the first of them. That is the pair Bhrigu Sutras' commentary on the 5th house calls "two bad houses" for Virgo. The 3rd is not a Kendra, so there is no Ruchaka Yoga despite the own-sign dignity.
Company. Saturn shares Scorpio with Mars, at 13.95 degrees, and is labelled Enemy sign there: this app's table makes Mars a natural enemy of Saturn, and Mars, the lord of Scorpio, is in the same sign as Saturn - the 1st from it, a temporary-enemy position - so the fivefold result is Great Enemy. Saravali's Sl. 25-30 lines cover a Saturn aspect, not Saturn in the same sign, so the Saturn line does not apply.
Aspects. Using this engine's aspect rule, none of the seven grahas aspects the 3rd: the Sun, Mercury and Venus in the 5th aspect the 11th; Jupiter in the 6th aspects the 12th, 10th and 2nd; the Moon in the 12th aspects the 6th. So only the bare sign line of Sl. 15-16 applies to this chart.
What the engine shows. The own-sign label describes the sign strength of Mars only. The same Mars rules the 3rd and 8th for this Lagna, so the engine's house rows for those two houses are read through a planet in its own sign, while the 3rd itself also holds an Enemy-sign Saturn.
How often Mars is in Scorpio
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mars was in Scorpio in 230 of them, 7.7 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The share differs from sign to sign because Mars moves unevenly - a retrograde loop can hold it in one sign for months - and the sample years decide where those loops fall.
Checking Mars in Scorpio in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Mars is in Scorpio and read the dignity label in its row.
- Note the house Scorpio occupies. If it is the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th, check the Yogas list for Ruchaka.
- Note the house Aries occupies: the other house Mars rules.
- List any planet in Taurus (the 7th from Scorpio), Jupiter in Cancer or Pisces, and Saturn in Virgo or Leo. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 25-30 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Mars Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Mars exalted in Scorpio?
- No. Mars is exalted in Capricorn. Scorpio is one of its two own signs, which BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 credits with half the good effects.
- Does Mars have a Moolatrikona in Scorpio?
- No. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 gives Mars a Moolatrikona only in the first 12 degrees of Aries. Bhrigu Sutras calls the whole of Scorpio Mars's Swakshetra.
- Does Mars in Scorpio always form Ruchaka Yoga?
- No. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 also needs a Kendra from the Lagna, which happens only for Scorpio, Leo, Taurus and Aquarius Lagnas.
- Why does Saravali read Mars in Scorpio so differently from Aries?
- It does not say. Ch. 25 Sl. 1-2 praises Mars in Aries and Sl. 15-16 is harsh about Scorpio, though both are own signs. The aspect lines of Sl. 25-30 apply to both equally.
- Can another planet change the dignity of Mars in Scorpio?
- No. Mars is the lord of Scorpio, so the engine never reaches the relation test. Other planets change the reading through aspect, not the label.
- How common is Mars in Scorpio?
- In this app's sample Mars was in Scorpio in 230 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.7 per cent.
