In short
Mars in Leo is Mars in the sign of the Sun, which the classical tables count as a natural friend of Mars, so Leo is a friend's sign for it. In a real chart this app labels it Friendly sign, or Neutral when the Sun sits in a temporarily hostile position - including Leo itself. Saravali reads the placement as valour and restless activity, and changes the verdict by aspect.
Mars in Leo puts the graha of energy and command in the fixed fire sign of the Sun. Both are fiery, both are counted among the natural malefics in this app's tables, and the classical friendship lists make the Sun a friend of Mars. So by nature Leo is a friend's sign for Mars, a mid-to-good grade on the dignity scale.
What makes Leo distinctive is that its lord is the Sun, the planet that also decides combustion. When the Sun and Mars share Leo, the same fact that makes Mars combust also makes the Sun a temporary enemy, and the engine's label drops from Friendly sign to Neutral. The worked example below is exactly that case.
This page covers only the combination. For Mars as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - see Mars in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its element, its nakshatras and what a rising Leo means - see Leo, Simha Rashi. This page is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.
Mars in Leo: dignity, and how this app decides it
Leo is not one of Mars's special signs. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 places its exaltation in Capricorn and its debilitation in Cancer, the sign just before Leo; Sl. 51-54 gives its Moolatrikona as Aries 0-12, and its own signs are Aries and Scorpio. See Mars in Capricorn, Mars in Cancer and Mars in Aries for those.
The Mars chapter of Bhrigu Sutras names the Sun, the Moon and Jupiter as Mars's friends, and this app's natural-relation table agrees. So with no chart the engine marks all of Leo a Friendly sign for Mars - the friend's sign of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60, credited with a quarter of the good effects. The general scale is under dignity.
| Degrees of Leo | Label in this engine (natural relation only) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Friendly sign | One quarter in a friend's sign |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the relation between the planet and the sign's lord. Leo is not Mars's exaltation, Moolatrikona, debilitation or own sign, so every degree of it falls through to the last test: the relation between Mars and Sun, the lord of Leo. The Sun is a natural friend of Mars, so without a chart every degree of Leo reads Friendly sign. The degree of Mars inside Leo never changes the label.
Why the label can differ from chart to chart
The table above is the natural relation alone, which is what the engine uses when it has no chart. In a real chart it uses the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58: the natural relation (naisargika maitri) combined with a temporary one (tatkalika maitri). BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 makes two grahas temporary friends when one sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the other, and temporary enemies otherwise. So the question for Mars in Leo is simply where Sun sits, counted from Leo.
| Natural relation, Mars to Sun | Temporary relation (where Sun sits from Mars) | Fivefold result (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58) | Label this engine shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friend | Friend: 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12 | Great Friend | Friendly sign |
| Friend | Enemy: 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 | Neutral | Neutral |
Friend by nature and friend by position make Great Friend, shown as Friendly sign; friend by nature and enemy by position cancel into Neutral. So in a real chart Mars in Leo reads Friendly sign when the Sun is in Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Taurus, Gemini or Cancer (the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from Leo), and Neutral when the Sun is in Leo itself or in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces or Aries. It is never Enemy sign in this engine.
The nakshatras Mars moves through in Leo
Leo holds all four padas of Magha, all four of Purva Phalguni and the first pada of Uttara Phalguni. The label does not change between them. The nakshatra pages go further: Magha, Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Leo | Mars's label there (natural relation) |
|---|---|---|
| Magha | 1, 2, 3, 4 | Friendly sign |
| Purva Phalguni | 1, 2, 3, 4 | Friendly sign |
| Uttara Phalguni | 1 | Friendly sign |
What the classical texts say about Mars in Leo
Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 9-10
Saravali's line for Mars in Leo, in paraphrase: impatience and valour, a liking for forests, constant activity at work, a taste for hunting, and, less kindly, designs on the wealth of others, few children and little charity. The line also includes a clause about diet and one about the loss of a first wife; those are the text's statements and are reported only as such.
The neighbours frame it. Sl. 7-8 gives Mars in Cancer, its fall, a line of dependence and distress; Sl. 11-12 gives Mars in Virgo honour and learning but little valour. Leo's line is the one that keeps Mars's courage, which is what one might expect of a fire sign ruled by a friend. See Mars in Virgo for the next line.
Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 49-54: the aspect lines
Leo, like Cancer, has its own set of aspect lines for Mars in Saravali. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Sun: humility, help to friends, supporters of one's own, and a liking for pastures, forests and hills.
- Aspected by the Moon: intelligence, a hardy body, wide fame and money through women, with a clause about the mother that is the text's statement.
- Aspected by Mercury: cleverness in many arts, skill in poetry, and miserliness and a bad disposition in the text's words.
- Aspected by Jupiter: closeness to the ruler, great learning, a pure mind, and command of an army - the strongest of the six.
- Aspected by Venus: many relationships with women, good fortune through a spouse, and a youthful manner.
- Aspected by Saturn: an aged look, poverty, and wandering between other people's homes.
The pattern is familiar from the other Mars pages: Jupiter's aspect reads best and Saturn's worst, and the Sun, the lord of Leo, gives a mild and sociable line rather than a martial one. Note that the Sun can aspect Leo only from Aquarius, the 7th sign - which is also a temporary-enemy position, so a Mars in Leo aspected by the Sun is always labelled Neutral by this engine.
BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras
BPHS gives no character line for Mars in Leo. Its rules decide the label: the Sun is Mars's natural friend, the temporary relation follows Ch. 3 Sl. 56, and Sl. 57-58 combine them. Under Sl. 59-60, the result is a quarter of the good effects in a friend's sign, or an eighth where the compound relation falls to neutral.
Bhrigu Sutras supplies one case. In its commentary on Mars in the 9th house, it lists five Lagnas for which its adverse reading of Mars in the 9th does not apply. The second is a Sagittarius Lagna, where Mars in the 9th is lord of the 5th - which places Mars in Leo. The commentator's reason is lordship: Mars rules the 5th (Aries) and the 12th (Scorpio) for that Lagna.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: the Sun is a natural friend of Mars, so Leo is a friend's sign (Bhrigu Sutras, Mars chapter; this engine's table).
- Agreed in shape: Saravali's Jupiter aspect reads best, as it does for every sign of Mars in Ch. 25.
- Different emphasis: Saravali reads the bare sign with mixed results; Bhrigu Sutras reads Mars in Leo kindly for a Sagittarius Lagna because of what it rules.
- Silent: BPHS has no sign-by-sign character line for Mars.
How Leo changes the houses Mars rules and sits in
The Lagna decides which house Leo is and which two houses Mars rules. Whole-sign houses make the mapping exact:
| Lagna | House of Mars (Leo) | Mars also rules (Aries) | and (Scorpio) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 5th | 1st | 8th |
| Taurus | 4th | 12th | 7th |
| Gemini | 3rd | 11th | 6th |
| Cancer | 2nd | 10th | 5th |
| Leo | 1st | 9th | 4th |
| Virgo | 12th | 8th | 3rd |
| Libra | 11th | 7th | 2nd |
| Scorpio | 10th | 6th | 1st |
| Sagittarius | 9th | 5th | 12th |
| Capricorn | 8th | 4th | 11th |
| Aquarius | 7th | 3rd | 10th |
| Pisces | 6th | 2nd | 9th |
For a Sagittarius Lagna, Leo is the 9th - the Bhrigu Sutras case. For a Cancer Lagna, as in the example below, Mars sits in the 2nd as lord of the 5th and 10th, the yoga-karaka role this app's table (from BPHS Ch. 34) gives Mars for Cancer. For a Leo Lagna, Mars sits in the 1st as lord of the 4th and 9th. The house pages, such as Mars in the 2nd house and Mars in the 1st house, go further.
Worked example: 4 September 1985, 04:39 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Cancer rises at 29.24 degrees. Mars is at 2.49 degrees of Leo, in Magha pada 1, in the 2nd house. It is flagged combust and not retrograde. The engine labels it Neutral, not Friendly sign.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Leo 17.72 | Purva Phalguni (2) | 2 | Moolatrikona |
| Moon | Aries 9.15 | Ashwini (3) | 10 | Enemy sign |
| Mars | Leo 2.49, combust | Magha (1) | 2 | Neutral |
| Mercury | Leo 1.6 | Magha (1) | 2 | Neutral |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 14.88, retrograde | Shravana (2) | 7 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Cancer 14.46 | Pushya (4) | 1 | Neutral |
| Saturn | Libra 29.08 | Vishakha (3) | 4 | Exalted |
| Rahu | Aries 18.47 | Bharani (2) | 10 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 18.47 | Swati (4) | 4 | Neutral |
Dignity. The Sun, lord of Leo, is in Leo too, at 17.72 degrees. Counted from Leo, Leo is the 1st sign, a temporary-enemy position under BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56. Friend by nature plus enemy by position gives Neutral under Sl. 57-58. The same closeness puts Mars inside the Sun's combustion range, but that flag is reported separately and is not an input to the label.
Company. Mercury is also in Leo, at 1.6 degrees, less than a degree from Mars. Saravali's Sl. 49-54 lines are for aspects, not for planets in the same sign, so this page does not apply Mercury's aspect line to it.
Lordship. For a Cancer Lagna, Mars rules the 5th (Scorpio) and the 10th (Aries) - the yoga-karaka role this app records for Cancer - and sits in the 2nd.
Aspects. Using this engine's aspect rule, none of the seven grahas aspects the 2nd here: Jupiter in the 7th aspects the 11th, 1st and 3rd; Saturn in the 4th aspects the 6th, 10th and 1st; the Moon in the 10th aspects the 4th; Venus in the 1st aspects the 7th. So only the bare sign line of Sl. 9-10 applies.
How often Mars is in Leo
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mars was in Leo in 310 of them, 10.3 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The share differs from sign to sign because Mars moves unevenly - a retrograde loop can hold it in one sign for months - and the sample years decide where those loops fall.
Checking Mars in Leo in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Mars is in Leo and read the dignity label in its row.
- Note where the Sun sits, counted from Leo. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign gives Friendly sign; any other, including Leo itself, gives Neutral.
- Note whether Mars is flagged combust; the label does not use it.
- List any planet in Aquarius (the 7th from Leo), Jupiter in Sagittarius or Aries, and Saturn in Gemini or Taurus. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 49-54 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Mars Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Mars strong in Leo?
- By dignity it is mid-to-good: a friend's sign, which BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 credits with a quarter of the good effects. It is not exalted (Capricorn) or in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio).
- Why does my chart show Mars in Leo as Neutral?
- Because the engine uses the fivefold relation. If the Sun is in Leo with Mars, or in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces or Aries, it is a temporary enemy, and natural friendship plus temporary enmity gives Neutral.
- Can Mars in Leo be labelled Enemy sign?
- Not in this engine. The Sun is a natural friend, so the fivefold result is either Great Friend (shown as Friendly sign) or Neutral.
- What does Saravali say about Mars in Leo?
- Ch. 25 Sl. 9-10 gives valour, impatience and constant activity, with some harsher clauses. Sl. 49-54 reads a Jupiter aspect best and a Saturn aspect worst.
- How common is Mars in Leo?
- In this app's sample Mars was in Leo in 310 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 10.3 per cent.
