In short
Mars in Virgo is Mars in the second sign of Mercury, its natural enemy, so by nature Virgo is an enemy's sign for Mars. In a real chart this app labels it Enemy sign, or Neutral when Mercury sits in a temporarily friendly position from Virgo. Saravali reads the placement as honour, learning and refinement, with little wealth and less valour.
Mars in Virgo puts the graha of action in the mutable earth sign of Mercury. It is Mercury's second sign, and for Mercury the most important: BPHS makes Virgo its exaltation, Moolatrikona and own sign in turn. For Mars, though, the lord is what matters, and Mercury is the one planet the classical tables make Mars's natural enemy. So Virgo, like Gemini, is an enemy's sign for Mars by nature.
The two Mercury signs share Saravali's aspect lines but not its sign lines, and the difference between them is instructive: Gemini gives Mars learning and travel, Virgo gives it learning and refinement but little force.
This page covers only the combination. For Mars as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - see Mars in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its element, its nakshatras and what a rising Virgo means - see Virgo, Kanya Rashi. This page is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.
Mars in Virgo: dignity, and how this app decides it
Virgo holds none of Mars's special dignities. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 sets its exaltation in Capricorn and its debilitation in Cancer; Sl. 51-54 gives its Moolatrikona as Aries 0-12; its own signs are Aries and Scorpio. The same sloka divides Virgo three ways for Mercury - exaltation, Moolatrikona, own sign - but those bands belong to Mercury and do not touch Mars's label. See Mars in Capricorn and Mars in Cancer for Mars's extremes.
Bhrigu Sutras' Mars chapter names Mercury as Mars's enemy, and this app's table agrees, so with no chart the engine marks every degree of Virgo an Enemy sign - nil good effects on BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60's scale. The general idea is under dignity.
| Degrees of Virgo | Label in this engine (natural relation only) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Enemy sign | Nil in an enemy's sign |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the relation between the planet and the sign's lord. Virgo is not Mars's exaltation, Moolatrikona, debilitation or own sign, so every degree of it falls through to the last test: the relation between Mars and Mercury, the lord of Virgo. Mercury is Mars's natural enemy, so with no chart the answer is Enemy sign from 0 to 30 degrees. Mercury's own bands inside Virgo play no part in Mars's label.
Why the label can differ from chart to chart
The table above is the natural relation alone, which is what the engine uses when it has no chart. In a real chart it uses the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58: the natural relation (naisargika maitri) combined with a temporary one (tatkalika maitri). BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 makes two grahas temporary friends when one sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the other, and temporary enemies otherwise. So the question for Mars in Virgo is simply where Mercury sits, counted from Virgo.
| Natural relation, Mars to Mercury | Temporary relation (where Mercury sits from Mars) | Fivefold result (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58) | Label this engine shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enemy | Friend: 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12 | Neutral | Neutral |
| Enemy | Enemy: 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 | Great Enemy | Enemy sign |
Enemy by nature and friend by position cancel into Neutral; enemy both ways gives Great Enemy, shown as Enemy sign. So in a real chart Mars in Virgo reads Neutral when Mercury sits in Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Gemini, Cancer or Leo (the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from Virgo), and Enemy sign when Mercury is in Virgo itself or in Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries or Taurus.
The nakshatras Mars moves through in Virgo
Virgo holds the last three padas of Uttara Phalguni, all four of Hasta and the first two of Chitra. The label is the same throughout. The nakshatra pages go further: Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and Chitra.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Virgo | Mars's label there (natural relation) |
|---|---|---|
| Uttara Phalguni | 2, 3, 4 | Enemy sign |
| Hasta | 1, 2, 3, 4 | Enemy sign |
| Chitra | 1, 2 | Enemy sign |
What the classical texts say about Mars in Virgo
Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 11-12
Saravali's line for Mars in Virgo, in paraphrase: worthy of honour but never rich, soft and sweet-spoken, learned and skilled in the Shastras and the fine arts, fond of music, bathing and adornment, with many kinds of expense, little valour and a fear of enemies. It also includes a clause about physical build, which is the text's and is not repeated here.
Set against the neighbours, the line is gentle but unmartial. Sl. 9-10 gives Mars in Leo valour; Sl. 13-14 gives Mars in Libra wandering and dubious trade. And Sl. 5-6, for the other Mercury sign, gives Mars in Gemini learning and travel without the note of timidity. See Mars in Leo, Mars in Libra and Mars in Gemini.
Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 37-42: the aspect lines
The aspect lines are shared with Gemini: Saravali reads Mars in either Mercury sign under each aspect. Briefly:
- Sun: learning, wealth, courage and great strength, with a liking for hills, forests and forts.
- Moon: happiness, wealth and a post in charge of a royal household.
- Mercury: skill in writing, mathematics and poetry, sweet but excessive speech, work as an envoy, and much hardship.
- Jupiter: a ruler's representative and envoy abroad, bright, capable and a leader.
- Venus: great good fortune, comfort in food and clothing.
- Saturn: farming and wandering in mines, hills and forests, valour, and poverty.
For Virgo, whose sign line lacks courage, two of these aspects restore it: the Sun's and Saturn's lines both speak of strength or valour. Jupiter's line, as on every Mars page, reads as the most clearly favourable.
BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras
BPHS writes no character line for Mars in Virgo. Its rules make the label - Mercury's place among Mars's enemies, the temporary relation of Ch. 3 Sl. 56, and their combination in Sl. 57-58 - and its ratio of effects (Sl. 59-60) separates the two outcomes: nil in an enemy's sign, an eighth in an equal's.
Bhrigu Sutras speaks to Virgo as a Lagna rather than to Mars in Virgo. In its commentary on Mars in the 5th house, it notes that for a Virgo Lagna Mars rules "two bad houses", the 3rd and 8th. That lordship holds wherever Mars sits for a Virgo Lagna, including in Virgo itself, in the 1st.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: Mercury is Mars's natural enemy, so Virgo is an enemy's sign by nature (Bhrigu Sutras; this engine's table).
- Apart: Saravali's Virgo line is honourable and learned, though not wealthy or brave - milder than the dignity grade suggests.
- Shared: Saravali gives Gemini and Virgo one set of aspect lines (Sl. 37-42) but separate sign lines.
- Silent: BPHS has no sign-by-sign character line for Mars.
How Virgo changes the houses Mars rules and sits in
The Lagna decides which house Virgo is and which two houses Mars rules. Whole-sign houses make the mapping exact:
| Lagna | House of Mars (Virgo) | Mars also rules (Aries) | and (Scorpio) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 6th | 1st | 8th |
| Taurus | 5th | 12th | 7th |
| Gemini | 4th | 11th | 6th |
| Cancer | 3rd | 10th | 5th |
| Leo | 2nd | 9th | 4th |
| Virgo | 1st | 8th | 3rd |
| Libra | 12th | 7th | 2nd |
| Scorpio | 11th | 6th | 1st |
| Sagittarius | 10th | 5th | 12th |
| Capricorn | 9th | 4th | 11th |
| Aquarius | 8th | 3rd | 10th |
| Pisces | 7th | 2nd | 9th |
For a Virgo Lagna, Mars sits in the 1st as lord of the 3rd and 8th - the Bhrigu Sutras remark above. For an Aries Lagna, as in the example below, Mars is Lagna lord in the 6th. For a Cancer Lagna, Mars, the yoga karaka in this app's table, sits in the 3rd. The house pages, such as Mars in the 6th house and Mars in the 3rd house, go further.
Worked example: 19 October 1985, 17:44 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Aries rises at 2.43 degrees. Mars is at 1.25 degrees of Virgo, in Uttara Phalguni pada 2, in the 6th house, neither retrograde nor combust. The engine labels it Neutral.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Libra 2.4 | Chitra (3) | 7 | Debilitated |
| Moon | Sagittarius 15.5 | Purva Ashadha (1) | 9 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Virgo 1.25 | Uttara Phalguni (2) | 6 | Neutral |
| Mercury | Libra 19.55 | Swati (4) | 7 | Friendly sign |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 13.94 | Shravana (2) | 10 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Virgo 10.03 | Hasta (1) | 6 | Debilitated |
| Saturn | Scorpio 3.06 | Vishakha (4) | 8 | Neutral |
| Rahu | Aries 16.06 | Bharani (1) | 1 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 16.06 | Swati (3) | 7 | Neutral |
Dignity. Mercury, the lord of Virgo, is at 19.55 degrees of Libra. Counted from Virgo, Libra is the 2nd sign, a temporary-friend position under BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56. Enemy by nature plus friend by position gives Neutral under Sl. 57-58. With Mercury in Virgo itself, the same Mars would read Enemy sign.
Company. Venus shares Virgo with Mars, at 10.03 degrees, and is debilitated there - Virgo is Venus's fall in this app's table. The Saravali lines quoted above are for aspects, so they do not cover a planet in the same sign.
Lordship. For an Aries Lagna, Mars rules the 1st (Aries) and the 8th (Scorpio) and sits in the 6th.
Aspects. Using this engine's aspect rule, one graha reaches the 6th: Jupiter, at 13.94 degrees of Capricorn in the 10th, casts its 9th-house aspect onto Virgo. So Saravali's Jupiter line from Sl. 37-42 applies to this chart - a representative of authority, an envoy abroad, a capable leader. Saturn in the 8th aspects the 10th, 2nd and 5th; the Moon in the 9th aspects the 3rd; neither reaches the 6th.
How often Mars is in Virgo
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mars was in Virgo in 276 of them, 9.2 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The share differs from sign to sign because Mars moves unevenly - a retrograde loop can hold it in one sign for months - and the sample years decide where those loops fall.
Checking Mars in Virgo in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Mars is in Virgo and read the dignity label in its row.
- Note where Mercury sits, counted from Virgo. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign gives Neutral; any other gives Enemy sign.
- Note any planet sharing Virgo with Mars; Saravali's aspect lines do not cover it.
- List any planet in Pisces (the 7th from Virgo), Jupiter in Capricorn or Taurus, and Saturn in Cancer or Gemini. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 37-42 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Mars Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Mars debilitated in Virgo?
- No. Mars is debilitated in Cancer. Virgo is a Mercury sign, an enemy's sign for Mars by nature. Virgo is where Venus is debilitated, not Mars.
- Why does my chart show Mars in Virgo as Neutral?
- Because the engine uses the fivefold relation: if Mercury sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from Virgo it is a temporary friend, and natural enmity plus temporary friendship gives Neutral (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58).
- Do Mercury's exaltation degrees in Virgo affect Mars?
- No. The exaltation, Moolatrikona and own-sign bands in Virgo are Mercury's. Mars's label depends only on its relation with Mercury.
- How is Mars in Virgo different from Mars in Gemini?
- Same lord, same dignity rules, same Saravali aspect lines. The sign lines differ: Gemini gives learning and travel, Virgo learning and refinement with little valour.
- How common is Mars in Virgo?
- In this app's sample Mars was in Virgo in 276 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9.2 per cent.
