In short

Mars in Libra is Mars in the second sign of Venus, which the classical tables make neutral to Mars, so by nature Libra is an equal's sign for it. In a real chart this app labels it Friendly or Enemy depending on where Venus sits. Saravali gives the bare sign a restless, mixed line, and reads a Venus or Saturn aspect on it most favourably.

Mars in Libra puts Mars in the cardinal air sign of Venus, exactly opposite Aries, its own sign. Libra is not a special dignity for Mars; its lord, Venus, is neither friend nor enemy to Mars in the classical tables, so the sign starts at the middle of the scale. As with Taurus, Venus's other sign, the engine then decides the label from where Venus actually sits in the chart.

Being opposite Aries has one mechanical consequence that holds in every chart: by the 7th-house aspect that every graha casts, a Mars in Libra always aspects Aries, its own sign, and so the house Aries occupies.

This page covers only the combination. For Mars as a graha - its significations, aspects, strength and dashas - see Mars in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its element, its nakshatras and what a rising Libra means - see Libra, Tula Rashi. This page is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.

Mars in Libra: dignity, and how this app decides it

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 puts Mars's exaltation in Capricorn and its debilitation in Cancer; Sl. 51-54 gives its Moolatrikona as Aries 0-12; its own signs are Aries and Scorpio. Libra is none of these. The neighbouring cases are Mars in Scorpio, which is own sign, and Mars in Aries across the zodiac.

Bhrigu Sutras' Mars chapter lists Venus and Saturn as neutral to Mars, and this app's table agrees. With no chart the engine therefore marks every degree of Libra Neutral - the equal's sign of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60, credited with one eighth of the good effects. See dignity for the scale.

Dignity bands from engine-facts.mjs mars-in-libra (run 2026-10-14), which calls dignityOf without a chart; the effect ratios are the text's, not the engine's.

How the engine decides

The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the relation between the planet and the sign's lord. Libra is not Mars's exaltation, Moolatrikona, debilitation or own sign, so every degree of it falls through to the last test: the relation between Mars and Venus, the lord of Libra. Venus is neutral to Mars by nature, so with no chart every degree of Libra reads Neutral; there is no boundary inside the sign.

Why the label can differ from chart to chart

The table above is the natural relation alone, which is what the engine uses when it has no chart. In a real chart it uses the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58: the natural relation (naisargika maitri) combined with a temporary one (tatkalika maitri). BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 makes two grahas temporary friends when one sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the other, and temporary enemies otherwise. So the question for Mars in Libra is simply where Venus sits, counted from Libra.

Natural relation, Mars to VenusTemporary relation (where Venus sits from Mars)Fivefold result (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58)Label this engine shows
NeutralFriend: 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12FriendFriendly sign
NeutralEnemy: 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9EnemyEnemy sign
Natural relation Neutral (Bhrigu Sutras, Mars chapter; NATURAL_RELATIONS in kundaliEngine.js).

Neutral by nature plus friend by position gives Friend; neutral plus enemy gives Enemy. So in a real chart Mars in Libra is never shown as Neutral: it reads Friendly sign when Venus is in Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Cancer, Leo or Virgo (the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from Libra), and Enemy sign when Venus is in Libra itself or in Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus or Gemini.

The nakshatras Mars moves through in Libra

Libra holds the last two padas of Chitra, all four of Swati and the first three of Vishakha. The label is the same in each. The nakshatra pages go further: Chitra, Swati and Vishakha.

What the classical texts say about Mars in Libra

Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 13-14

Saravali's line for Mars in Libra, in paraphrase: a wandering life, skill as a speaker, good fortune, few relatives and a taste for conflict, with trade the text calls unworthy and gains that do not last. The line also mentions the loss of a first wife and a physical defect; those are the text's statements, reported only as such.

The neighbours differ. Sl. 11-12 gives Mars in Virgo honour and learning; Sl. 15-16 gives Mars in Scorpio, its own sign, a line of trade, learning and combativeness with some very harsh clauses. Libra's line is mixed rather than severe. Compare it with Mars in Taurus, the other Venus sign, whose line Saravali makes harder.

Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 31-36: the aspect lines

Saravali reads Mars in either Venus sign under each aspect, so Libra shares these six lines with Taurus. In brief:

  • Sun: courage and a fierce look, a liking for forests and hills, with many enemies.
  • Moon: popularity with women and fear of war, with harsher clauses about conduct towards the mother in the text's words.
  • Mercury: a quarrelsome and talkative manner, little wealth, but learning in the Shastras.
  • Jupiter: musical skill, good fortune, purity and the affection of relatives.
  • Venus: a minister's post, the ruler's favour, command, titles and happiness.
  • Saturn: happiness, fame and wealth, friends, learning and a leading role in a community.

Venus, the lord of Libra, gives the most favourable line, with Saturn close behind. Venus can aspect Libra only from Aries - the 7th sign from Libra and a temporary-enemy position - so whenever Venus's Saravali line applies, this engine labels the same Mars Enemy sign. Text and engine are answering different questions: the aspect line reads an influence, the label measures sign strength.

BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras

BPHS has no character line for Mars in Libra. Its rules - natural relation, temporary relation (Ch. 3 Sl. 56), compound relation (Sl. 57-58) - give the label, and its ratio (Sl. 59-60) a quarter of the good effects in a friend's sign, an eighth in an equal's and nil in an enemy's.

Bhrigu Sutras offers a house-based point. In its commentary on Mars in the 10th house, it says Mars gives good effects there because it gains directional strength in the 10th. For a Capricorn Lagna, Libra is the 10th - the worked example below.

Where the texts agree, and where they part

  • Agreed: Libra is not an exaltation, debilitation, Moolatrikona or own sign for Mars, and Venus is neutral to Mars by nature.
  • Different questions: Saravali reads Venus's aspect on a Libra Mars favourably; this engine, which measures sign strength, labels that same configuration Enemy sign.
  • Silent: BPHS has no sign-by-sign character line for Mars.

How Libra changes the houses Mars rules and sits in

The Lagna decides which house Libra is and which houses Mars rules. Whole-sign houses make the mapping exact:

LagnaHouse of Mars (Libra)Mars also rules (Aries)and (Scorpio)

Sagittarius11th5th12th
Capricorn10th4th11th
Aquarius9th3rd10th
Pisces8th2nd9th
Houses counted whole-sign from each Lagna, as this app's birth chart does.

For a Capricorn Lagna, Libra is the 10th, where Bhrigu Sutras gives Mars directional strength. For a Libra Lagna, Mars sits in the 1st as lord of the 2nd and 7th. For an Aries Lagna, Mars, the Lagna lord, sits in the 7th and aspects the 1st. The house pages, such as Mars in the 7th house and Mars in the 1st house, go further.

An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Capricorn rises at 0.16 degrees. Mars is at 5.34 degrees of Libra, in Chitra pada 4, in the 10th house, neither retrograde nor combust. The engine labels it a Friendly sign.

engine-facts.mjs mars-in-libra, run 2026-10-14. Ascendant Capricorn 0.16. Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde (mean node) and are not marked.

Dignity. Venus, lord of Libra, is at 18.46 degrees of Scorpio. Counted from Libra, Scorpio is the 2nd sign, a temporary-friend position. Neutral by nature plus friend by position gives Friend under BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58, shown as Friendly sign.

Lordship. For a Capricorn Lagna, Mars rules the 4th (Aries) and the 11th (Scorpio) and sits in the 10th, a Kendra, which Bhrigu Sutras' commentary associates with directional strength for Mars. From the 10th, Mars aspects the 4th - Aries, its own sign - and the 1st and 5th.

Aspects. Using this engine's aspect rule, none of the seven classical grahas reaches the 10th here: the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Saturn are in the 11th, aspecting the 5th (and Saturn also the 1st and 8th); the Moon in the 12th aspects the 6th; Jupiter in the 1st aspects the 7th, 5th and 9th. Only Rahu, in the 4th, casts a 7th aspect onto the 10th, and Saravali's aspect lines do not cover the nodes. So only the sign line of Sl. 13-14 applies.

Company. Ketu shares Libra with Mars, at 13.16 degrees. Saravali's Ch. 25 does not read a node in the same sign as Mars, and this page adds nothing the text does not give.

How often Mars is in Libra

Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mars was in Libra in 262 of them, 8.7 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The share differs from sign to sign because Mars moves unevenly - a retrograde loop can hold it in one sign for months - and the sample years decide where those loops fall.

Checking Mars in Libra in your own chart

  1. Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Mars is in Libra and read the dignity label in its row.
  2. Note where Venus sits, counted from Libra. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign gives Friendly sign; any other gives Enemy sign.
  3. Note the house Aries occupies: Mars in Libra always aspects it.
  4. List any planet in Aries (the 7th from Libra), Jupiter in Gemini or Aquarius, and Saturn in Leo or Capricorn. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 31-36 line into play.
  5. Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Mars Mahadasha page.

What this page does not do

It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.

Is Mars debilitated in Libra?
No. Mars is debilitated in Cancer. Libra is Venus's sign, neutral for Mars by nature; Libra is where Saturn is exalted and the Sun debilitated in this app's table.
Why does my chart show Mars in Libra as Friendly or Enemy, not Neutral?
Because the engine adds the temporary relation. Neutral by nature becomes Friend when Venus is in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from Libra, and Enemy otherwise (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56-58).
Does Mars in Libra aspect Aries?
Yes, always. Every graha aspects the 7th sign from itself, and Aries is the 7th from Libra.
What does Saravali say about Mars in Libra?
Ch. 25 Sl. 13-14 gives wandering, eloquence and fortune with unstable gains. Sl. 31-36 reads a Venus or Saturn aspect most favourably.
How common is Mars in Libra?
In this app's sample Mars was in Libra in 262 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.7 per cent.
