Guna milan defined: the eight-koota, 36-point matching of two Moon positions, where its rules come from, and exactly how this app scores it.

In short

Guna milan, also called Ashtakoot matching, compares two birth charts through eight factors called kootas and adds their points to a score out of 36. Every koota is read from the two Moon signs or the two Moon nakshatras. None of the classical texts this app reads contains the rules, so the engine follows published references where they agree.

What the term means

Guna milan is the matching of gunas, the points a marriage match is counted in; the engine's notes describe it as the system used across North India for marriage matching. It has eight kootas, each worth a fixed maximum from 1 to 8 points, summed to a total out of 36. Four kootas read the two Moon signs and four read the two Moon nakshatras. Nothing else in either chart enters the score.

Where the term comes from

The texts in this app's library are silent on it. A search of BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha and Advanced Predictive Astrology finds no Ashtakoot rules; the only "Koota" in Saravali is a chart-shape yoga. The project's rules document records this and the owner's decision: the engine follows published references, adopts a rule only where independent references agree, and keeps its previous behaviour where they disagree.

How this app computes it

  • The eight kootas and their maxima: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7, Nadi 8.
  • Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot read the Moon signs; Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi read the Moon nakshatras.
  • A marriage match scores all eight out of 36. Business and friendship matches score four (Graha Maitri, Gana, Tara, Bhakoot), out of 21.
  • The total is placed in a band (strong, workable, mixed or challenging) at 75, 55 and 35 percent, and Mulank and Bhagyank harmony from both birth dates is shown beside it.
  • Without a birth time, any koota whose input changed during that birth day is named, with the points riding on it, instead of the whole score being hedged.

A small illustration

A Moon at 1 degree of Aries (Ashwini) against one at 1 degree of Leo (Magha) scores Varna 1, Vashya 1, Tara 3, Yoni 2, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 0, Bhakoot 0 and Nadi 8: 20 of 36. The project's sweep of all 11,664 ordered pairs of the 108 nakshatra quarters gives a mean of 21.07, a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 34.5, which puts any one score in context.
