Manglik defined: a chart that carries Mangal Dosha, the six-house rule this app uses, the narrower BPHS rule, and how the two-chart reading treats it.

In short

Manglik describes a person whose chart carries Mangal Dosha: Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna, by the convention this app uses. BPHS Ch. 80 states a narrower rule with four houses and a benefic exemption. Half of the sampled birth moments meet the six-house rule.

What the term means

Manglik (from Mangal, Mars) is the everyday word for someone whose chart has Mangal Dosha, also called Kuja Dosha. It belongs to marriage matching: the question it answers is where Mars sits, counted from the Lagna. On this site it is a flag about one placement, shown with its house, and never a judgment about a person or a marriage.

Where the term comes from

The word Manglik does not occur in the classical texts this app reads. The rule behind it does: BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47, in the chapter on female horoscopy, reads Mars in the 12th, 4th, 7th or 8th from the Lagna as a marriage affliction, but only when Mars is "without aspect by, or association with any benefic". Sl. 48-49 apply the same to a man and add that when both partners have it, the Yog "ceases to have any effect". One numerology book in the library uses "Manglik effect" for a number-grid pattern, which is unrelated to Mars's house.

How this app computes it

  • The single-chart flag uses six houses: Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th. Mars in the 7th or 8th is labelled Moderate, the rest Mild.
  • This is broader than BPHS on purpose: the owner kept the six-house convention because it is the one readers compare against. Neither the benefic exemption nor the both-partners rule is applied to a single chart.
  • The two-chart reading does apply BPHS Sl. 48-49: Mars in these houses for both people is listed as protective, and for one person only as a pressure point to talk about.
  • It needs a birth time and a resolved place, since the house depends on the Ascendant.

A small illustration

For 19 January 1985, 11:14 IST, New Delhi, Mars is in the 12th, so the app flags Mangal Dosha as Mild. Under the wording of BPHS Sl. 47 the same chart would not qualify, because Venus, a benefic, sits with Mars in the 12th. Of the 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 used by this site's tools, the six-house rule fired in exactly 1,500, half of them, which is one reason the flag alone says little.

What it needs

Date, time and place

That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
