In short
Gana koota is the sixth of the eight Ashtakoot matching factors and is worth six points. Each Moon nakshatra belongs to one of three ganas, Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa, and the koota compares the two. This app scores 6 for the same gana, 0 for Deva with Rakshasa and 3 for any other mix, because the references it consulted disagree on finer grades.
What the term means
Gana means "group" or "class". Gana koota sorts the 27 nakshatras into three classes, Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa, conventionally glossed as divine, human and demonic, and compares the classes of the two people's Moon nakshatras. It is worth six points of 36 in guna milan. The app describes it as behavioural temperament, "how you each react under stress"; the class names are labels inside the rule, not descriptions of anyone.
Where the term comes from
The texts in this app's library do not contain it; no gana-koota rule appears in BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha or Advanced Predictive Astrology. The rule comes from the published references the project adopted for Ashtakoot. Those references agree on which nakshatra belongs to which gana, but they disagree on the points for mixed pairs: some give a symmetric table, others a grid that depends on which partner is the bride and which the groom.
How this app computes it
- Each Moon nakshatra is looked up in a fixed table of 27 ganas. Ardra was moved from Rakshasa to Manushya in 2026, where three references agreed.
- Same gana: 6. Deva with Rakshasa: 0. Any other mix: 3.
- The finer grades of the references were not adopted, because they disagree and because the app has no bride or groom input: the score must come out the same whichever chart is entered first.
- It is one of the four kootas used in business and friendship matching, and it is in doubt when the Moon changed nakshatra during an untimed birth day.
A small illustration
Ashwini is Deva and Magha is Rakshasa, so a Moon in Ashwini with one in Magha scores 0 for Gana, one of the two zero scores in that pair's 20 of 36 (the other is Bhakoot). Ashwini with Bharani (Manushya) scores 3. Magha with Krittika, both Rakshasa, scores the full 6.
