Koota defined: one of the eight scored factors of Ashtakoot matching, its maximum points and the Moon input it reads, plus the unrelated Koota yoga.

In short

A koota is one factor in Ashtakoot (guna milan) matching: a rule that compares two Moon positions and awards points up to a fixed maximum. There are eight, worth 1 to 8 points and 36 in all. The same word also names an unrelated chart-shape yoga in BPHS and Saravali.

What the term means

Koota (also written kuta or kootam) is one scored factor in matching two charts. Each koota compares the two Moon signs or the two Moon nakshatras by a fixed rule and awards points up to its maximum. The eight together make the Ashtakoot ("eight kootas") system, whose total out of 36 is the guna milan score.

Where the term comes from

The matching kootas are not in the classical texts this app reads, and the project's rules document says so. The word itself does appear, in another sense: BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 14 names "Koot Yog", formed when all the grahas fill the seven houses from the 4th, and Saravali Ch. 21 lists Koota among its 32 Nabhasa yogas. That chart-shape yoga has nothing to do with matching; the engine tests it separately as a Nabhasa yoga.

How this app uses it

  • Each koota is returned with its name, score, maximum and a one-line note, so every point in a match can be traced to the rule that gave it.
  • Marriage matching uses all eight; business and friendship use four of them (Graha Maitri, Gana, Tara, Bhakoot).
  • Because each koota is tied to one input, a missing birth time puts only some kootas in doubt, and the app names those.
  • In the Ashwini-with-Magha example the weakest kootas are Gana and Bhakoot (both 0) and the strongest Graha Maitri, Tara and Nadi (full marks), for 20 of 36.
