In short
Yoni koota is the fourth of the eight Ashtakoot matching factors and is worth four points. Each Moon nakshatra is given one of fourteen animals, and the two animals are compared. This app scores 4 for the same animal, 0 for one of seven traditional enemy pairs and 2 for everything else.
What the term means
Yoni here means "kind" or "species". Yoni koota gives each of the 27 nakshatras an animal, from a list of fourteen, and compares the animals of the two people's Moon nakshatras. It is worth four points of 36 in guna milan. The app's one-line note for it reads "instinctive and physical compatibility", and it names both animals so the score can be checked.
Where the term comes from
The matching rule is not in the texts this app reads. BPHS does not use the word; Saravali uses it only in other senses, in "Graha Yoni Bheda", another name for its chapter on the grahas' characters, and in "Viyoni" for non-human births. Like the other kootas, Yoni comes from the published references the project adopted, and the project's rules document lists it among the kootas left unchanged in the 2026 review.
How this app computes it
- Each nakshatra maps to one of fourteen animals: Horse, Elephant, Sheep, Serpent, Dog, Cat, Rat, Cow, Buffalo, Tiger, Deer, Monkey, Mongoose and Lion. Most animals are shared by two nakshatras.
- Seven pairs are treated as natural enemies: Cat and Rat, Lion and Elephant, Cow and Tiger, Horse and Buffalo, Dog and Deer, Monkey and Sheep, Serpent and Mongoose.
- Same animal: 4 points. An enemy pair: 0. Any other pair: 2. The engine uses only these three values.
- It reads each person's Moon nakshatra, so it is in doubt when the Moon changed nakshatra during an untimed birth day. It counts in marriage matching, not in the business or friendship score.
A small illustration
Ashwini's animal is the Horse and Magha's is the Rat. They are neither the same nor an enemy pair, so a Moon in Ashwini with one in Magha scores 2. Punarvasu's animal is the Cat; with Magha's Rat it forms an enemy pair and scores 0, which the engine returns for a Moon at 25 degrees of Gemini against one at 1 degree of Leo.
