In short
Nadi koota is the eighth and heaviest of the Ashtakoot matching factors, worth eight of the 36 points. Each Moon nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis, Aadi, Madhya or Antya. This app gives all eight points when the two nadis differ and none when they are the same, which popular practice calls Nadi Dosha.
What the term means
Nadi koota sorts the 27 nakshatras into three nadis, named Aadi, Madhya and Antya (first, middle and last), and compares the nadis of the two people's Moon nakshatras. At eight points it carries more weight than any other koota in guna milan, which is why a same-nadi result draws so much attention in matching.
Where the term comes from
The texts in this app's library do not contain the matching rule; a search of BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha and Advanced Predictive Astrology finds no Nadi koota. Like the rest of Ashtakoot it comes from the published references the project adopted, and the project's rules document lists Nadi among the kootas left unchanged when those references were reviewed in 2026.
How this app computes it
- Each nakshatra has a fixed nadi in the engine's table. The table runs in a back-and-forth pattern of six, Aadi, Madhya, Antya, Antya, Madhya, Aadi, repeated from Ashwini to Revati.
- Different nadis: 8 points. Same nadi: 0. There is no middle value.
- For a same-nadi pair the app's note says it is "traditionally flagged; worth discussing openly", which is as far as it goes. It does not apply exceptions or remedies.
- It reads Moon nakshatras, so it is in doubt when the Moon changed nakshatra during an untimed birth day. It counts in marriage matching only, not in the business or friendship score.
A small illustration
Ashwini and Ardra are both Aadi, so a Moon in Ashwini with a Moon in Ardra scores 0 for Nadi; that pair totals 15.5 of 36. Ashwini (Aadi) with Magha (Antya) scores the full 8, and that pair totals 20. The single koota moves the total by eight points either way.
