In short
Nadi Dosha is the name for the Nadi koota scoring 0 of 8 in Guna Milan, which this app does whenever both Moon nakshatras belong to the same one of three groups of nine. It happens in exactly one third of all pairings. No book in this app's library states the Nadi rule, and the engine applies no exceptions to it.
Nadi Dosha is often presented as the one result in a marriage match that cannot be talked away. This page takes it apart: exactly what the engine computes, which birth stars share a Nadi, what a lost Nadi does to a score, and what the books in this app's library do and do not say about it. To run a pair, use the Kundli matching calculator or the match tool. The long-form under the calculator already covers the one-third arithmetic and how Nadi and Bhakoot fail together; this page goes further into Nadi alone.
What Nadi Dosha is, and how this app computes it
Guna Milan, or Ashtakoot matching, compares two birth Moons through eight kootas worth 36 points in all (see Guna Milan and koota). Nadi is the last and the heaviest, worth 8. Each of the 27 nakshatras belongs to one of three Nadis - Aadi, Madhya or Antya - and the Nadi koota compares the two people's groups. Different Nadis score 8. The same Nadi scores 0, and that 0 is what is called Nadi Dosha.
In the engine, ashtakoot() in compatibilityEngine.js looks up each Moon nakshatra in a 27-entry table and compares the two values. There is nothing else to the rule: no partial score, no dependence on the pada (quarter), the Moon sign, the order in which the two people are entered, or anything else in either chart. The note the calculator prints beside a 0 is "Same Nadi - traditionally flagged; worth discussing openly."
| Nadi | The nine nakshatras in it (engine table) |
|---|---|
| Aadi | Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada |
| Madhya | Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada |
| Antya | Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati |
The pattern is a zig-zag through the 27 stars in runs of three: Ashwini, Bharani and Krittika go Aadi, Madhya, Antya; the next three go back Antya, Madhya, Aadi; and so on. Two people whose Janma Nakshatras appear on the same row above have Nadi Dosha in this app; any two on different rows do not. If you are unsure of your star, the nakshatra calculator gives it.
Where it is used, and where it is not
- Marriage matching: Nadi is one of the eight kootas and counts toward the 36.
- Business and Friendship matching: Nadi is not scored at all. Those match types use four kootas only - Graha Maitri, Gana, Tara and Bhakoot, 21 points - so a shared Nadi changes nothing there.
- The signed-in two-chart reading on the Compatibility feature: when Nadi scores 0, it adds a pressure entry named "Nadi dosha", with the mechanism "Both birth stars (...) fall in the same Nadi - Nadi scores 0 of 8." and a practical suggestion about staggering recovery time. When Nadi and Bhakoot both score, it lists "Both durability kootas clear" as a protective factor instead.
What the classical texts say
Here the honest answer is short. No book in this app's source library contains the Nadi rule. A search of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra translation, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Daivajna Vallabha finds no Nadi koota and no Ashtakoot matching at all; in Advanced Predictive Astrology the word Nadi appears only inside the title of another book. The matching engine's own header says the same of all eight kootas: no book in the library holds the Ashtakoot rules.
For three of the kootas - Bhakoot, Gana and Graha Maitri - the project's owner authorised published web references in October 2026, adopting a rule only where independent references agree; the rules document lists them. Nadi was not changed in that review. The header records that "Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni and Nadi are unchanged", and it names no source for the Nadi table itself. So the table above is the engine's long-standing implementation of the system as commonly practised, stated here exactly, not a rule this page can quote from a classical book.
That gap matters for how much weight the result can carry. Claims often attached to a shared Nadi - about health, children or the length of a marriage - have no source in this library. The engine makes none of them, and neither does this page.
Remedies
Nadi Dosha is frequently followed by advice to perform a ritual before marriage. This app prescribes no pujas, mantras, gemstones or donations for it or for any other result.
How common it is, and what it does to a score
Each Nadi holds exactly nine stars, so any one star shares its Nadi with nine of the 27, itself included. Across all 11,664 pairings of the 108 nakshatra quarters, Nadi scores 0 in 3,888 - exactly one third. That is a property of the table, not a survey of couples.
The more useful question is what that 0 does to the overall verdict. The engine labels a marriage total of 75 per cent or more "Strong match", 55 to 75 "Workable", 35 to 55 "Mixed - proceed with awareness" and below 35 "Challenging". Splitting all 11,664 pairings by their Nadi score:
| Nadi 0 (3,888 pairings) | Nadi 8 (7,776 pairings) | |
|---|---|---|
| Mean total | 16.40 | 23.41 |
| Highest total | 28 | 34.5 |
| Strong match | 372 | 1,608 |
| Workable match | 519 | 4,766 |
| Mixed | 1,955 | 1,402 |
| Challenging | 1,042 | 0 |
Two things stand out. Every one of the 1,042 Challenging pairings in the whole grid has Nadi 0: in this engine no pair that keeps its Nadi points can fall below 35 per cent. And a lost Nadi does not settle the matter the other way either: 372 Nadi-0 pairings still reach Strong, and 519 more reach Workable. The highest possible total with Nadi at 0 is 28, one point above the Strong threshold of 27.
A third observation runs against intuition. Leave Nadi out and compare the other seven kootas: Nadi-0 pairings average 16.40 points on them, Nadi-8 pairings 15.41. Pairs that share a Nadi do slightly better on everything else, largely because the same-star pairs in that group score at or near the maximum on every other koota.
Nadi with and without Bhakoot
What decides the verdict for a Nadi-0 pair is mostly whether Bhakoot, the other heavy koota, survives. Splitting the 3,888 Nadi-0 pairings by their Bhakoot score:
| Nadi-0 pairings | Strong | Workable | Mixed | Challenging |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bhakoot kept (2,188) | 372 | 507 | 1,137 | 172 |
| Bhakoot also 0 (1,700) | 0 | 12 | 818 | 870 |
With Bhakoot kept, four in ten Nadi-0 pairs still reach Workable or Strong. With Bhakoot also lost, 15 points are gone before anything else is counted, no pair reaches Strong and only 12 reach Workable. Of the 1,042 Challenging pairings in the whole grid, 870 have lost both. The Bhakoot Dosha page covers the other half of that table.
Same star, same quarter
Of the 3,888 Nadi-0 pairings, 432 are two Moons in the same nakshatra and 108 are two Moons in the very same quarter. In this engine a shared nakshatra is always a shared Nadi and always scores 0, with no special treatment. The remaining 3,456 are different stars that happen to sit in the same group.
How the chance changes with the distance between Moon signs
Nadi reads stars, not signs, but because each sign holds two and a quarter stars, the distance between two Moon signs changes the odds of a shared Nadi considerably:
| Moon signs | Pairings | Nadi 0 | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same sign | 972 | 516 | 53.1% |
| 2nd / 12th from each other | 1,944 | 384 | 19.8% |
| 3rd / 11th | 1,944 | 696 | 35.8% |
| 4th / 10th | 1,944 | 712 | 36.6% |
| 5th / 9th | 1,944 | 568 | 29.2% |
| 6th / 8th | 1,944 | 748 | 38.5% |
| 7th (opposite) | 972 | 264 | 27.2% |
Two Moons in the same sign share a Nadi more often than not, because that group includes every same-star pair. Moons in neighbouring signs share one in only about one case in five. The three distances on which Bhakoot scores 0 - 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 - account for the 1,700 pairings that lose both.
Worked example: Bharani with Pushya
This is the first Nadi-0 example the engine-facts tool finds. Person A has the Moon in Aries, in Bharani (2nd quarter); person B in Cancer, in Pushya (1st quarter). Both stars are Madhya.
| Koota | Score | Engine note |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 of 1 | Kshatriya and Brahmin |
| Vashya | 0.5 of 2 | Who naturally leads decisions between you. |
| Tara | 1.5 of 3 | Health, fortune and general wellbeing together. |
| Yoni | 2 of 4 | Elephant and Sheep |
| Graha Maitri | 4 of 5 | Mars and Moon rule your Moon signs |
| Gana | 3 of 6 | Behavioural temperament |
| Bhakoot | 7 of 7 | Long-term prosperity and family harmony. |
| Nadi | 0 of 8 | Same Nadi - traditionally flagged; worth discussing openly. |
| Total | 19 of 36 | Mixed - proceed with awareness |
Without the Nadi 0 this pair would have scored 27, exactly the Strong threshold; with it, 19 and Mixed. Bhakoot is full, because Cancer is the 4th sign from Aries, and the remaining kootas are middling. Now run the same two Moons as a Business or Friendship match. Nadi drops out, the four scored kootas give 15.5 of 21 (74 per cent) and the verdict is Workable. The same pair, the same stars, a different question, and Nadi Dosha has no say in the answer.
In the signed-in two-chart reading, this pair would get the "Nadi dosha" pressure entry, whose template fills in as "Both birth stars (Bharani and Pushya) fall in the same Nadi - Nadi scores 0 of 8." Because Nadi is at 0, the "Both durability kootas clear" line is not shown, even though Bhakoot scores in full. Moon-sign pages such as Aries and Cancer Moon sign compatibility cover the sign-level kootas for this pair of signs.
What the summary line will and will not say
The match card ends with a sentence naming "the area needing most attention", chosen as the scored koota with the lowest share of its maximum. When several kootas score 0, they tie, and the engine names the first in the fixed koota order, which puts Nadi last. So a Nadi-0 pair is told that Nadi needs most attention only when no other koota is also at 0. Across the 3,888 Nadi-0 pairings that happens in 1,033. In 1,402 the sentence names Varna, a one-point koota that is at 0 too; in 698 it names Bhakoot; the rest name Gana, Yoni or Graha Maitri. If your card shows Nadi at 0 but names something else, that is why: the koota rows above the sentence are the full picture.
In the two-chart reading the wording is the app's own, not classical. The "Nadi dosha" entry describes the pattern as "similar constitutions and similar exhaustion points" and suggests not scheduling both partners' demanding weeks together. It is a practical framing chosen for this product, and it is labelled as a pressure point, not a prohibition.
A second pair: Uttara Phalguni with Jyeshtha
The engine-facts tool's second example is a Virgo Moon in Uttara Phalguni (4th quarter) with a Scorpio Moon in Jyeshtha (1st quarter). Both stars are Aadi, so Nadi is 0. Bhakoot is full again, Scorpio being the 3rd sign from Virgo, but Graha Maitri gives only 1 of 5 (Mercury and Mars rule the two signs), and the total is 16.5 of 36, Mixed; 15.5 with the order reversed. No other koota is at 0 here - the lowest after Nadi is Graha Maitri at 1 of 5 - so this time the summary line does name Nadi.
A third case: the same star twice
Give both people the Moon in Bharani, one in the 2nd quarter and one in the 3rd. Every other koota is at its maximum - Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 - and Nadi is 0. The total is 28 of 36, Strong, the highest a Nadi-0 pair can reach. Two identical Moons win everything except the one koota that penalises sameness.
Cancellations and exceptions
The engine applies none. Same Nadi is 0, always, in the marriage score and in the two-chart reading.
Popular descriptions of matching list exceptions under which a shared Nadi is said not to count. None of them appears in any book in this library, none was among the references the engine adopted in October 2026, and the engine computes none of them. This page therefore does not list them as rules. If another site or a practitioner applies one, that is the most likely reason their Nadi score differs from this one.
The one place where the system as implemented here does give Nadi a lighter touch is by design: it is left out of the Business and Friendship match types entirely. The sister rule Bhakoot Dosha, by contrast, counts in all three.
What Nadi Dosha does not tell you
As with Mangal Dosha and Kaal Sarp Dosha, the result describes a relationship between two positions. It is not a verdict on two people.
- It does not predict the course of a marriage. The engine attaches no outcome to it, and no source in the library does either.
- It makes no health claim. The note for a shared Nadi says only that it is traditionally flagged and worth discussing openly. The note for different Nadis uses the phrase "health and vitality compatibility is sound"; that is the koota's conventional label, not a medical statement.
- It reads one input per person, the Moon nakshatra. Nothing else in either chart is consulted.
- It often depends on the birth time. Checking the engine's Moon at 00:00, every three hours and 23:59 IST on each date from 1970 to 2015, the Moon was in more than one nakshatra on 16,101 of 16,801 dates (95.8 per cent), and in more than one Nadi on 11,484 (68.4 per cent). On roughly two birth dates in three, then, the Nadi is not settled without a time, and the calculator flags Nadi among the kootas at risk when that happens. See what an unknown birth time costs and why apps disagree on your nakshatra.
- It is not a reason to buy anything, and no remedy is offered.
Reading a Nadi 0 on your own card
- Check the two stars first. The card prints both nakshatras; find them in the table at the top of this page and confirm they are on the same row.
- Check whether either star is settled. If a birth time is missing, the card marks Nadi as at risk, and on about two birth dates in three the Nadi could go either way.
- Look at Bhakoot next. A Nadi 0 with Bhakoot kept still reaches Workable or Strong in four pairings out of ten; with Bhakoot also lost, almost never.
- Read the total against the koota rows, not the summary sentence alone, since the sentence may name a different koota at 0.
- Remember what the result rests on: a table of three groups, applied without exceptions, for which no book in this library is a source.
For the matching system as a whole, see the hub page Nakshatra matching and the article on your Moon sign and nakshatra.
- What exactly triggers Nadi Dosha in this app?
- Both Moon nakshatras belonging to the same Nadi group in the engine's table - Aadi, Madhya or Antya. The Nadi koota then scores 0 of 8. Nothing else in either chart is consulted.
- How common is it?
- Exactly one pairing in three: 3,888 of the 11,664 pairings of nakshatra quarters. Each star shares its Nadi with nine of the 27, itself included.
- Can a match with Nadi Dosha still be Strong?
- Yes. In the engine, 372 Nadi-0 pairings reach Strong and 519 reach Workable. The highest possible total with Nadi at 0 is 28 of 36.
- We share the same nakshatra. Is that Nadi Dosha?
- In this app, yes, always: a shared nakshatra is always a shared Nadi and scores 0. The engine applies no exception for different quarters of the same star, or for anything else.
- Which classical text states the Nadi rule?
- None in this app's library. BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha and Advanced Predictive Astrology contain no Ashtakoot rules, and the engine's header names no source for its Nadi table.
- Does Nadi Dosha affect a business or friendship match?
- No. Those match types score only Graha Maitri, Gana, Tara and Bhakoot, out of 21. Nadi counts only in the marriage score.
- Is Nadi Dosha worse than Bhakoot Dosha?
- Nadi is worth 8 points and Bhakoot 7, so a lost Nadi costs one point more. The app's two-chart reading weights its "Bhakoot dosha" pressure entry at 2 and its "Nadi dosha" entry at 1.5. No book in the library ranks the two, so neither weighting is classical.
- Does the order we are entered in change Nadi?
- No. Nadi compares two groups and is the same either way. The total can still move by a point when you swap the order, because Varna depends on order: the Bharani and Pushya example scores 19 one way and 18 the other.
- Why does another site show different Nadi results?
- Usually because one of you has a different Moon nakshatra there - often a birth-time or ayanamsa difference near a nakshatra boundary - or because that site applies exceptions this engine does not compute.
- Does the app suggest a remedy for Nadi Dosha?
- No. This app prescribes no pujas, mantras, gemstones or donations for Nadi Dosha or any other result.
