Doshas

Bhakoot Dosha is the Bhakoot koota of Guna Milan scoring 0 of 7 because two Moon signs sit 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other. Here is the exact rule this app runs, where that rule came from, what it does to a match across all 11,664 pairings, worked pairs for each distance, and what it cannot tell you.

In short

Bhakoot Dosha is the name for the Bhakoot koota scoring 0 of 7, which this app does whenever two Moon signs are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other. That happens in exactly half of all pairings. No book in this app's library states the rule; it was adopted from agreeing web references in October 2026, and the engine applies no exceptions.

Bhakoot Dosha is one of the two results in a marriage match that people ask about most, alongside Nadi. This page sets out exactly what the engine computes, which pairs of Moon signs trigger it, where the rule comes from (not from any classical book in this app's library), and what a lost Bhakoot actually does to a score. To run a pair, use the Kundli matching calculator or the match tool. The long-form under the calculator covers the scoring system as a whole; the Nadi Dosha page covers the other heavy koota. This page stays with Bhakoot.

What Bhakoot Dosha is, and how this app computes it

Guna Milan, also called Ashtakoot matching, compares two birth Moons through eight kootas worth 36 points in all (see Guna Milan and koota). Bhakoot is the seventh and the second heaviest, worth 7. Unlike Nadi, which reads birth stars, the Bhakoot koota reads Moon signs: it counts how far apart the two signs are. Three distances score 0 and every other distance scores the full 7. That 0 is what is called Bhakoot Dosha.

In the engine, ashtakoot() in compatibilityEngine.js counts from the first person's Moon sign to the second's, inclusively, so the same sign is 1, the next sign 2, and the opposite sign 7. It then checks that count, and the count taken the other way round, against a list: 2, 12, 5, 9, 6 and 8. If either direction is on the list, Bhakoot scores 0; otherwise 7. There is no partial score. The note printed beside the koota is the same in both cases: "Long-term prosperity and family harmony."

Because each distance comes in a pair - if your partner's Moon sign is 2nd from yours, yours is 12th from theirs - the rule is symmetric. Entering the two people the other way round never changes Bhakoot. Leo is the 5th sign from Aries and Aries the 9th from Leo, so an Aries Moon with a Leo Moon scores 0 whichever is entered first.

A quick way to check your own pair

  1. Find both Moon signs. The Moon sign calculator gives yours if you are unsure.
  2. Count from one sign to the other, starting at 1 on the first sign and moving forward through the zodiac order (Aries, Taurus, Gemini and so on).
  3. If the count is 2, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 12, Bhakoot is 0. If it is 1, 3, 4, 7, 10 or 11, Bhakoot is 7.

That is the whole of the rule. The nakshatra, the pada, the planets ruling the two signs and every other part of either chart play no role in Bhakoot itself; they enter the match only through the other seven kootas.

Where it is used

  • Marriage matching: Bhakoot is one of the eight kootas and counts toward the 36.
  • Business and Friendship matching: Bhakoot is scored here too. Those match types use four kootas - Graha Maitri, Gana, Tara and Bhakoot, 21 points - so Bhakoot carries a third of the total there, a larger share than in marriage matching. This is the opposite of Nadi, which those match types leave out.
  • The signed-in two-chart reading on the Compatibility feature: when Bhakoot scores 0, it adds a pressure entry named "Bhakoot dosha" with weight 2 (the "Nadi dosha" entry has 1.5). When Bhakoot and Nadi both score, it lists "Both durability kootas clear" as a protective factor.

What the classical texts say, and where this rule came from

No book in this app's source library contains the Bhakoot rule. A search of the two Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra translations, Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology finds no Bhakoot koota and no Ashtakoot matching at all. The engine's header says the same of all eight kootas: no source book in the library contains the Ashtakoot rules.

For Bhakoot, Gana and Graha Maitri, the project's owner decided in October 2026 to use published web references instead, adopting a rule only where independent references agree and keeping the engine's earlier behaviour wherever they disagree. The project's rules document lists eight references by address. For Bhakoot, two of them - a matching guide on dekhopanchang.com and a Bhakoot article on astromedha.in - agree that 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 score 0 and all other distances score the full 7. A third article on the same subject was set aside because its own table of signs contradicts its own prose.

That review changed the result for one distance. Before October 2026 this engine scored only 2/12 and 6/8 as 0 and gave 5/9 the full 7. The two agreeing references both include 5/9, so it was added. On the full grid of nakshatra quarters, the change moved a sixth of all pairings (the 1,944 at 5/9) from 7 points to 0, and the rules document records its effect on the verdicts: Strong matches fell from 2,912 to 1,980 of 11,664, and Challenging rose from 1,018 to 1,042.

Why this matters if you compare apps

If another app or an older printout from this one shows a full Bhakoot for a 5/9 pair, that is the difference: some practice scores 5/9 and some does not, and before October 2026 this engine did not. Since then it does, on the strength of the two references above. Neither reference names a classical work for the rule, so this page cannot quote one either.

Claims commonly attached to Bhakoot Dosha - about money, children, health or the length of a marriage - have no source in this library. The engine's note uses the conventional label for the koota, "long-term prosperity and family harmony", and attaches no prediction to it. Neither does this page.

Remedies

Bhakoot Dosha is often followed by advice to perform a ritual or wear a stone before marriage. This app prescribes no pujas, mantras, gemstones or donations for it or for any other result.

How common it is, and what it does to a score

Of the seven sign distances, three score 0. Counting pairings rather than distances, every pair of Moon signs falls at one distance, and the three zero distances happen to cover exactly half of all pairings: of the 11,664 pairings of the 108 nakshatra quarters, 5,832 score Bhakoot 0. That is a property of the rule and the zodiac, not a survey of couples.

Any one Moon sign, then, has six partner signs with which Bhakoot is lost (two at each zero distance) and six with which it is kept (itself, the opposite sign, and two each at 3/11 and 4/10). The verdict thresholds are those of the marriage score: 75 per cent or more is "Strong match", 55 to 75 "Workable", 35 to 55 "Mixed - proceed with awareness" and below 35 "Challenging". Challenging870172

A lost Bhakoot does not decide the verdict on its own. Nearly half of the Bhakoot-0 pairings (2,608) still reach Workable, and 142 reach Strong; the highest possible total with Bhakoot at 0 is 27.5, just above the Strong threshold of 27. What a lost Bhakoot does is shift the whole distribution down by about five points on average, which turns many would-be Strong results into Workable ones and many Workable into Mixed.

The same counter-intuitive pattern seen with Nadi appears here. Leave Bhakoot out and compare the other seven kootas: Bhakoot-0 pairings average 18.51 points on them, Bhakoot-7 pairings 16.64. Pairs that lose Bhakoot do slightly better on everything else. Part of the reason is Nadi: the 2/12 distance puts the two Moons in neighbouring signs, where a shared Nadi is unusually rare, so those pairs often keep their 8 Nadi points.

Bhakoot and Nadi together

Of the 5,832 Bhakoot-0 pairings, 1,700 also have Nadi at 0. Those pairs have lost 15 of the 36 points before anything else is counted, and they make up 870 of the 1,042 Challenging pairings in the whole grid. The other 4,132 Bhakoot-0 pairings keep their Nadi points, and among them the verdicts are spread across all four bands. In short, a 0 in Bhakoot alone is common and usually moderate in effect; a 0 in Bhakoot and Nadi together is less common and accounts for most of the lowest scores. The Nadi page gives the same split from the other side.

In Business and Friendship matches

Here Bhakoot weighs more, because the total is only 21. A Bhakoot-0 pair can score at most 14 of 21 on the remaining three kootas, which is 67 per cent, below the 75 per cent needed for Strong. So in those match types a lost Bhakoot rules out a Strong verdict entirely:

Business / Friendship (of 21)StrongWorkableMixedChallenging

MENTAL_KOOTAS (Graha Maitri, Gana, Tara, Bhakoot) over the 108 x 108 grid, scratch run 2026-10-14.

The table is a clean split: no pair that keeps Bhakoot is Challenging in these match types, and no pair that loses it is Strong. This is where Bhakoot Dosha has the most mechanical influence on what the app shows, and it is worth knowing if you are using the calculator for a partnership other than marriage.

Worked example: Bharani with Magha

This is the first Bhakoot-0 example the engine-facts tool finds. Person A has the Moon in Aries, in Bharani (3rd quarter); person B in Leo, in Magha (1st quarter). Leo is the 5th sign from Aries, so the pair sits on the 5/9 distance - the one added in October 2026.

Without the Bhakoot 0 this pair would have scored 30, comfortably Strong; with it, 23 and Workable. Graha Maitri is full, because Mars and the Sun are listed as friends of each other, and Nadi is kept, so the pair has lost only one of the two heavy kootas. Under the engine's rule before October 2026, this pair would have been Strong. That is the 5/9 change in a single example.

Run the same two Moons as a Business or Friendship match and the four scored kootas give 11 of 21 (52 per cent), Mixed. In marriage matching the other kootas carry the pair to Workable; in the shorter score Bhakoot's 0 weighs more and the verdict drops a band.

In the signed-in two-chart reading this pair would get the "Bhakoot dosha" pressure entry, which describes the pattern in the app's own words as "recurring friction over money, family and the practical running of life, rather than over feelings", and suggests agreeing those decisions "on a fixed day, in writing". That is a practical framing chosen for this product, labelled as a pressure point, not a prohibition, and not a classical statement. The Aries and Leo Moon sign compatibility page covers the sign-level kootas for this pair of signs.

A second 5/9 pair: Uttara Phalguni with Uttara Ashadha

The tool's second example is a Virgo Moon in Uttara Phalguni (2nd quarter) with a Capricorn Moon in Uttara Ashadha (2nd quarter). Capricorn is the 5th sign from Virgo, so Bhakoot is 0. Gana is full at 6, Tara at 3, Graha Maitri 4 of 5 (Mercury and Saturn), Nadi 8, and the total is 24.5 of 36, Workable. As a Business or Friendship match it scores 13 of 21, 62 per cent, also Workable.

ashtakoot() at 21.67 against 51.67, 171.67 and 1.67 degrees sidereal, scratch run 2026-10-14. The last row is a contrast with Bhakoot kept.

The 6/8 pair shows how a Bhakoot 0 combines with other low kootas: Graha Maitri gives only 1 of 5 (Mars and Mercury) and Varna 0, and the total falls to Mixed. The 2/12 pair loses Bhakoot and Varna too but keeps a full Gana and Vashya, and stays Workable. The same-sign contrast scores 31, Strong, with every koota except Yoni and Gana at or near its maximum.

What the summary line will and will not say

The match card ends with a sentence naming "the area needing most attention", chosen as the koota with the lowest share of its maximum. Several kootas at 0 tie, and the engine then names the first in its fixed order: Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi. Across the 5,832 Bhakoot-0 pairings, the sentence names Bhakoot in 2,642. In 1,944 it names Varna, a one-point koota that is also at 0; the rest name Gana, Yoni or Graha Maitri. If your card shows Bhakoot at 0 but the sentence names something else, read the koota rows above it: they are the full picture.

Cancellations and exceptions

The engine applies none. A Moon-sign distance of 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 is 0, always, in the marriage score, in the Business and Friendship scores and in the two-chart reading.

Popular descriptions of matching list conditions under which Bhakoot Dosha is said not to count - typically involving the planets that rule the two Moon signs. None of them is in any book in this library. They were not part of what the two agreeing references were adopted for, and the engine computes none of them. This page therefore does not list them as rules. If another site or a practitioner applies one, that is the most likely reason their Bhakoot score differs from this one.

For a model of how this site treats a sourced cancellation, see Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not, where the mutual cancellation is stated because it can be traced. Bhakoot has no equivalent in this library.

What Bhakoot Dosha does not tell you

As with Kaal Sarp Dosha and the other doshas, the result describes a relationship between two positions. It is not a verdict on two people.

  • It does not predict the course of a marriage, its finances or its family life. The engine attaches no outcome to it and no source in the library does either; "long-term prosperity and family harmony" is the koota's conventional label, not a forecast.
  • It reads one input per person, the Moon sign, and one fact about the pair, the distance between them. Nothing else in either chart is consulted.
  • It is a coarse measure. Every pair of signs at the same distance gets the same answer, whatever the stars, quarters or planets involved.
  • It often depends on the birth time. Checking the engine's Moon at 00:00 and 23:59 IST on each date from 1970 to 2015, the Moon changed sign during the day on 7,373 of 16,801 dates (43.9 per cent). On those dates the Moon sign, and with it Bhakoot, is not settled without a time, and the calculator flags Bhakoot among the kootas at risk. See what an unknown birth time costs.
  • It is not a reason to buy anything, and no remedy is offered.

Reading a Bhakoot 0 on your own card

  1. Check the two Moon signs and count the distance. Confirm it is 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8.
  2. Check whether either sign is settled. Without a birth time, the Moon sign can change on a little under half of all birth dates.
  3. Look at Nadi next. A Bhakoot 0 with Nadi kept spreads across all four verdicts; with Nadi also lost, the total is far more likely to be Mixed or Challenging.
  4. If you are using a Business or Friendship match, remember that a Bhakoot 0 there rules out Strong by arithmetic alone.
  5. Remember what the result rests on: a rule of three distances, adopted from two agreeing web references in October 2026, applied without exceptions, for which no book in this library is a source.

For the matching system as a whole, see Nakshatra matching and the article on your Moon sign and nakshatra. The other doshas this app computes for a single chart include Kemadruma Dosha and Kendradhipathya Dosha; the general idea is set out under dosha in the glossary.

What exactly triggers Bhakoot Dosha in this app?
Two Moon signs that are 2nd and 12th, 5th and 9th, or 6th and 8th from each other. The Bhakoot koota then scores 0 of 7. Nothing else in either chart is consulted.
How common is it?
Exactly half of all pairings: 5,832 of the 11,664 pairings of nakshatra quarters. Each Moon sign loses Bhakoot with six of the twelve signs.
Can a match with Bhakoot Dosha still be Strong?
In marriage matching, yes, rarely: 142 Bhakoot-0 pairings reach Strong and 2,608 reach Workable, and the highest possible total is 27.5 of 36. In Business and Friendship matching, no: the remaining kootas cannot reach 75 per cent.
Why did my 5/9 pair score 7 elsewhere?
Some practice does not count 5/9 as a zero distance, and before October 2026 neither did this engine. It was added when two independent references agreed on it. Neither the old nor the new rule is quoted from a classical book in this library.
Which classical text states the Bhakoot rule?
None in this app's library. The BPHS translations, Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology contain no Ashtakoot rules. The engine's rule comes from published web references adopted in October 2026, listed in the project's rules document.
Does the order we are entered in change Bhakoot?
No. The engine checks the distance both ways, and each zero distance has its partner on the list, so Bhakoot is the same either way.
Is Bhakoot Dosha worse than Nadi Dosha?
Bhakoot is worth 7 points and Nadi 8, so a lost Nadi costs one point more in marriage matching. Bhakoot is also scored in Business and Friendship matches, where Nadi is not. The two-chart reading weights its "Bhakoot dosha" entry at 2 and "Nadi dosha" at 1.5; that weighting is the app's, not classical.
Are there cancellations for Bhakoot Dosha?
Popular sources describe some, usually involving the lords of the two Moon signs. None is in this app's library and the engine computes none.
Does the app suggest a remedy for Bhakoot Dosha?
No. This app prescribes no pujas, mantras, gemstones or donations for Bhakoot Dosha or any other result.
