Doshas

Kendradhipathya Dosha is a natural benefic, Jupiter or Venus, owning an angular house without owning the ascendant. Here is the exact rule this app runs, the twelve ascendants it fires for, a worked chart where six minutes change the answer, and where BPHS agrees and disagrees.

In short

Kendradhipathya Dosha is the classical idea that a natural benefic loses some of its benefic nature when it owns a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) without owning the 1st. This app tests it for Jupiter and Venus only, so it depends entirely on the rising sign: it fires for eight of the twelve ascendants and in 2,030 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060.

Kendradhipathya Dosha is the mildest and the most common of the doshas this app computes, and the one that most often surprises people when it appears beside their name. It is not about where any planet sits. It is about which houses two planets own, and that is fixed entirely by your rising sign. This page sets out the rule, the ascendants it applies to, how the classical text frames it and where the engine follows that text and where it does not. The chart-wide list of yogas is computed separately; this rule is in the engine's dosha check.

What Kendradhipathya Dosha is, and how this app computes it

Kendra means an angle: the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses (see kendra). Adhipati means lord. Kendradhipathya is the condition of being lord of an angle, and the "dosha" is the classical observation that when a natural benefic holds that lordship, its benefic nature does not come through there as it otherwise would. The house lord of each house is the ruler of the sign on it.

The engine's check is in detectDoshas() in kundaliEngine.js and runs in four steps:

  1. It needs an ascendant. Without a birth time and a resolved place, detectDoshas() returns nothing at all.
  2. It lists the houses each planet owns, from the sign on each whole-sign house and the sign lords.
  3. It looks at two planets only, Jupiter and Venus. For each, it asks whether any owned house is a kendra and whether the 1st is among them.
  4. If a kendra is owned and the 1st is not, it records "Kendradhipathya Dosha", severity "Mild", with the sentence: "[Planet] owns your [houses] house but not the 1st - its natural benefic nature is muted there rather than reversed; a well-known classical nuance, not a warning sign."

Three choices in that rule are worth naming. First, ownership of the 1st exempts the planet, because the ascendant is classically both an angle and a trine. Second, Mercury is left out: the engine's comment cites S. Kannan's Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology (p. 16) for Mercury being "only half-inclined" to this condition and excludes it "to avoid overclaiming". Third, the Moon, which the engine elsewhere counts among the benefics, is not tested either. Where Jupiter or Venus actually sit in the chart plays no part; only their lordship does.

Where you see it

The rule lives in the dosha check, not in the yoga list. The Mangal Dosha calculator runs that whole check and returns every entry it produces, so Kendradhipathya appears in its result table when present. The yogas calculator does not list it. Inside the app, the signed-in Kundali carries the same entry, and the risk breakdown counts it as a Mild dosha: one unit of weight, worth 5 of the 20 points in its "Active doshas" factor.

The twelve ascendants: who has it and who does not

Because the houses are whole signs and the rule reads ownership only, the answer depends on nothing but the rising sign. Jupiter owns Sagittarius and Pisces; Venus owns Taurus and Libra. Count those from each ascendant and the whole rule fits in one table. The right-hand column gives what BPHS Ch. 34 says about the same two planets for the same ascendant, discussed below.

Engine column: detectDoshas() over the 3,000-moment sample, split by ascendant (scratch run 2026-10-13); every chart of a flagged ascendant was flagged, and no chart of the other four. BPHS column: bphs.txt Ch. 34, labels only.

Eight ascendants carry the flag in every chart, four never do. Venus can own at most one kendra at a time, because its two signs are six apart; Jupiter's two signs are three apart, so for Gemini and Virgo rising it owns two kendras at once and the engine's sentence names both. Jupiter and Venus are never flagged together.

How common it is

Because the flag follows the rising sign, its frequency is simply the share of time the eight flagged signs spend rising. In the content programme's sample of 3,000 birth moments 1985-2060, cast at New Delhi, the engine flags it in 2,030, about 67.7 per cent. Split by ascendant, the sample looks like this:

Taurus242None
Gemini281All 281 (Jupiter)
Cancer294All 294 (Venus)
Leo285All 285 (Venus)

Pisces178None
detectDoshas() over the engine-facts 3,000-moment walk, split by ascendant sign; scratch run 2026-10-13. Of 3,000 sampled birth moments, not of people.

Eight of twelve signs would be 66.7 per cent if every sign rose for the same length of time. They do not: at New Delhi's latitude Cancer, Libra and Scorpio rose in many more of the sampled moments than Pisces or Aquarius, and the flagged set happens to include more of the long-rising signs. Venus accounts for 1,464 of the 2,030 flags and Jupiter for 566. Your own ascendant settles the question in one look.

What the classical texts say

BPHS Ch. 34, "Yoga Karakas"

The rule is in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, in the chapter on how lordship changes a planet's results. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 opens with it: benefics owning kendras "will not give benefic effects", while malefics owning kendras do not remain inauspicious. The same slokas give the ascendant's special status - its lord is "specially auspicious, as Lagn is a Kendr, as well as a Kon" - which is the engine's exemption for owning the 1st. Sl. 8-10 grades the effect: in revealing maleficence through kendra lordship, the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are significant "in the ascending order", so Venus most, then Jupiter, then Mercury, then the Moon.

The rule is one line of a larger scheme in the same slokas, and the scheme explains its logic. Lords of the trines (konas) give auspicious results; the 5th and 9th are "specially for wealth" and the 7th and 10th "specially for happiness"; lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th give evil effects; the 8th and 12th lords act according to their associations; and "in each group the significance will be in the ascending order". Kendra lordship, on this scheme, is neutralising rather than harmful: it pulls a natural benefic down from benefic and a natural malefic up from malefic. Read plainly, the ascending-order remark would also make the 10th the weightiest angle and the 4th the lightest. The engine does not grade by house; every case is "Mild".

Read against the Sl. 8-10 grading, the engine tests the two planets BPHS names as most affected and leaves out the two it names as least. The engine's reason for leaving Mercury out is Kannan's, not Parashara's, but the outcome is consistent with the order BPHS gives. The text's own per-ascendant lists also show why a Mercury or Moon rule would be hard to state cleanly. Mercury owns kendras without the 1st for Sagittarius and Pisces rising; BPHS names Mercury among the malefics for Pisces but says it can confer a Yog for Sagittarius. The Moon owns a kendra without the 1st for Aries, Libra and Capricorn; BPHS calls it a malefic for Capricorn and a Raj Yog cause for Libra.

Sl. 13 adds the exception the engine does not apply: a planet that owns both a kona (trine) and a kendra "will prove specially a Yog Karak". That is the definition of a yogakaraka, and Sl. 14 repeats the principle from the malefic side. The table above shows the consequence. For Capricorn rising, Venus owns the 10th and the 5th; for Aquarius rising, the 4th and the 9th. BPHS calls Venus auspicious for both and the yoga-giving planet for both. The engine flags Kendradhipathya Dosha for both, because its rule exempts only ownership of the 1st, not ownership of a trine.

One honest disagreement

For Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants the engine and BPHS point in opposite directions about Venus. The engine's sentence is mild and says the benefic nature is "muted rather than reversed", but the text this site treats as its primary authority calls the same Venus a yogakaraka. If your ascendant is one of these two, read the flag with that in mind.

The app itself carries both readings. Its Yoga Karaka table, built from BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44 and returned with the signed-in Kundali, lists Venus as the Yoga Karaka for Capricorn and Aquarius rising. The dosha check, returned with the same Kundali, flags Kendradhipathya Dosha for that same Venus. Each is faithful to its own rule; the two rules were never reconciled in code, and this page reports that rather than hiding it.

There is a second reason not to read the flag as a defect. In the very next slokas (Sl. 11-12), BPHS makes kendra lordship one half of its main Raj Yog rule: an exchange, conjunction or full mutual aspect between a kendra lord and a kona lord, or a kona lord placed in a kendra and the reverse, "cause a Yog". The lordship that Sl. 2-7 calls neutralising for a benefic is the same lordship Sl. 11-12 uses to build a Raj Yog. The two rules sit side by side in the text and are meant to be read together; the engine's Kendradhipathya check reads only the first. Those combinations have their own page, Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga.

For the other six flagged ascendants the engine and BPHS agree: the planet the engine flags is the one BPHS lists among the malefics for that ascendant. For the four unflagged ascendants BPHS still calls Jupiter or Venus malefic in some cases, but in each of them the planet in question owns the 3rd, 6th, 8th or 11th - lordships Sl. 2-7 treats as adverse in their own right - rather than an angle without the 1st. Those labels come from a different rule, and the engine does not compute it.

Advanced Predictive Astrology

The modern Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II in this library) uses the name itself. On p. 114, after listing the houses whose lords are traditionally condemned, it adds that the ownership of the 4th, 7th and 10th by natural benefics "is also not looked upon with favour because of Kendradhipathya dosha". In two later case discussions (p. 162 and p. 169) it applies the term to Jupiter for a Virgo ascendant and to Mercury in another chart. The second is a reminder that practitioners do apply it to Mercury, which this engine does not. The case details are not repeated here. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras do not name the rule.

Remedies

This app prescribes no mantras, gemstones, pujas or donations for Kendradhipathya Dosha or for any other result.

Worked example: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi

This is the first chart in the content programme's deterministic walk, and it happens to carry the flag. Anyone can enter the same date, time and place in the birth chart calculator.

Risk breakdown, "Active doshas"10 of 20: "Kendradhipathya Dosha (Mild), Mangal Dosha (Mild)."0 of 20: "No rated dosha is active in this chart."
engine-facts.mjs kendradhipathya-dosha and scratch runs of detectDoshas() and assessRisk() on the same chart, run 2026-10-13. The change happens between 06:05 and 06:06 IST.

At 06:00 the ascendant is the last degrees of Scorpio. Venus rules the 7th, a kendra, and does not rule the 1st, so the engine flags it; Jupiter rules the 2nd and 5th, neither an angle. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 35-36 lists Venus among the malefics for Scorpio rising, so text and engine agree for this chart.

Six minutes later Sagittarius is rising, and every lordship shifts by one house. Jupiter now owns the 1st and the 4th, so it is exempt; Venus owns the 6th and the 11th, neither an angle. The flag disappears. Mars, in Aquarius throughout, moves from the 4th house to the 3rd, so the Mangal Dosha flag goes too, and the risk factor that counted both falls from 10 to 0. Nothing in the sky moved appreciably in those six minutes; only the house frame did.

This is the general lesson for every ascendant-based rule: a birth time a few minutes out near a sign boundary can switch the answer. The articles on what an unknown birth time costs and on Mangal Dosha make the same point with other numbers. If your ascendant is near the end or start of a sign, check both neighbours before reading anything into this flag.

Cancellations and exceptions

  • Owning the 1st: applied by the engine. Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces rising, and Venus for Taurus and Libra rising, are never flagged. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 supports this.
  • Owning a trine as well as an angle: stated by BPHS (Sl. 13) and not applied by the engine. This affects Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius rising, as above.
  • Mercury and the Moon: excluded by the engine. BPHS includes both, at lower significance than Jupiter and Venus.
  • Placement, aspects, dignity and dasha: no source in the library makes them a cancellation of this rule, and the engine does not consider them.

What Kendradhipathya Dosha does not tell you

Like every rule on this site, from Kaal Sarp Dosha to Kemadruma, this describes a structure in the chart. It is not a verdict on anyone.

  • It does not say Jupiter or Venus is "bad" for you. The engine's own words are "muted there rather than reversed", and BPHS itself says such a benefic "will not give benefic effects" through that lordship, not that it does harm.
  • It does not single you out. It is shared by every chart with your rising sign, roughly two charts in three in the sample.
  • It does not weigh the planet's strength or position. A strong, well-placed Venus and a weak one get the same sentence.
  • It does not time anything. No period or age is attached to it.
  • It is not a reason for alarm or for a remedy, and none is offered.

For the planets themselves, see Jupiter in Vedic astrology and Venus in Vedic astrology. The angular houses each have a page, for example the 7th house and the 10th house, and the BPHS lordship yogas this chapter leads into are covered under Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga. The general term is in the glossary under dosha.

Why does the app say I have Kendradhipathya Dosha?
Because of your rising sign. If it is Aries, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn or Aquarius, Jupiter or Venus owns an angle of your chart without owning the 1st, and the engine flags it for every chart with that ascendant.
Is it serious?
The engine grades it "Mild", the lowest grade it uses, and describes it as "a well-known classical nuance, not a warning sign". BPHS frames it as a benefic not giving benefic results through that lordship, not as harm.
Why is Mercury not included?
The engine follows Kannan, who calls Mercury "only half-inclined" to this condition, and excludes it to avoid overclaiming. BPHS includes Mercury and the Moon but ranks both below Jupiter and Venus.
My ascendant is Capricorn and Venus is flagged. Is Venus not my yogakaraka?
By BPHS Ch. 34 it is: Venus owns your 5th and 10th, a trine and an angle, and Sl. 13 calls such a planet specially a Yog Karak; Sl. 39-40 calls Venus the one graha giving a superior Yog for Capricorn rising. The engine does not apply that exception. Aquarius rising is in the same position.
Does it matter where Jupiter or Venus is placed?
Not to this rule. The engine reads ownership only. In the worked example Venus sits in Aquarius, in the 4th house, itself an angle, and that plays no part in the result; only Venus's ownership of the 7th does.
How common is it?
Very. It fires for eight of the twelve ascendants, and in 2,030 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060.
Why did it disappear when I corrected my birth time?
Because the ascendant changed sign. In the worked example, 06:00 gives Scorpio rising and the flag; 06:06 gives Sagittarius rising and no flag.
Where can I check it?
In the Mangal Dosha calculator, which runs the full dosha check and lists every entry, with a birth time and place. The yogas calculator does not list it.
Does the app recommend remedies for it?
No. This app prescribes no mantras, gemstones, pujas or donations for this or any other result.
