In short
An Aries Moon with a Cancer Moon scores between 19 and 30 out of 36 across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app, median 25.5, with Aries entered first; entering Cancer first lowers every pairing by one Varna point. The signs keep the full 7 for Bhakoot at their 4/10 distance and 4 of 5 for Graha Maitri, since Mars counts the Moon as a friend.
Cancer is the sign the Moon itself rules, so an Aries-Cancer match puts Mars and the Moon in conversation as the two sign lords. In this app's Guna Milan engine that conversation goes better than many: the pair scores higher at its median than most Aries combinations, because the two signs avoid every penalised Bhakoot distance and Mars treats the Moon as a friend. The weak point among the sign kootas is Vashya, and the order of entry decides one Varna point.
The signs have their own pages: Aries, Mesha rashi and Cancer, Karka rashi. The nakshatra matching hub explains the full system and links every sign pair; the Kundli matching calculator scores two real birth charts.
Mesh and Kark: two movable signs
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 5-5.5 makes both signs movable, the first and fourth of that type. The resemblance stops there. Mesh (Sl. 6-7) is fiery, bilious, a quadruped of the hills ruled by Mangal. Kark (Sl. 10-11) is watery and phlegmatic, "pale-red", a many-footed sign of forests, Sattvic, ruled by Candr (the Moon), and it "represents Brahmins". Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 adds a relationship of its own: Mars is exalted in Makar and therefore debilitated in the seventh from it, which is Kark. That dignity rule describes Mars as a placed planet; the koota arithmetic never uses it, and a Cancer Moon partner is not a "debilitated Mars" for anyone.
The Cancer Moon's nine quarters are Punarvasu pada 4, Pushya (four padas) and Ashlesha (four). The Aries side is Ashwini, Bharani and the first pada of Krittika.
The kootas the two signs settle, and the score
| Koota | Out of | Reads | Aries first, Cancer second | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Sign | 1 (0 if Cancer is first) | Kshatriya and Brahmin class values compared in entry order |
| Vashya | 2 | Sign | 0.5 | The two signs' Vashya groups are not adjacent |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Sign | 4 | Mars counts the Moon a friend; the Moon is neutral to Mars |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Sign | 7 | 4/10 is not a penalised distance |
| Tara | 3 | Nakshatra | 1.5 or 3 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Yoni | 4 | Nakshatra | 2 or 4 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Gana | 6 | Nakshatra | 0, 3 or 6 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Nadi | 8 | Nakshatra | 0 or 8 | Depends on the two birth stars |
With Aries first the signs contribute 12.5 of 15; with Cancer first, 11.5. Across the 81 pairings the total is 19 to 30 out of 36 (median 25.5) in the first order and 18 to 29 (median 24.5) in the second. Even the lowest pairing here is above the median of two other Aries pairs, Aries-Virgo and Aries-Scorpio.
The reason is simple arithmetic. The two heaviest sign kootas, Bhakoot at 7 and Graha Maitri at 5, are both at or near their ceilings, so the pair starts with 11 of its 12.5 sign points from those two alone. Pairs that lose Bhakoot, like Aries with Leo or Aries with Virgo, begin seven points behind and can only catch up through the nakshatras. Here the nakshatras decide how high the total goes rather than whether it recovers. The half point from Vashya and the order-dependent Varna point are the only sign-level gaps.
Graha Maitri: friendship running one way
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, as the engine lists it, gives Mars three friends: the Sun, the Moon and Jupiter. The Moon's friends are the Sun and Mercury, and it has no enemies at all; Mars is simply neutral to it. The Graha Maitri value for a friend-neutral pair was raised from 3 to 4 in October 2026, when four published references the engine cites turned out to agree on 4. So this pair's 4 of 5 is a recent and well-supported figure.
Bhakoot: the square keeps its seven
Cancer is the 4th sign from Aries, and Aries the 10th from Cancer. The engine's Bhakoot rule only zeroes 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, so a 4/10 pair keeps the full 7 in all 81 pairings. That rule comes from web references named in the engine's header, since none of this library's books contains Bhakoot.
Vashya and Varna
The engine places Aries in a Vashya group with Taurus and Sagittarius, and Cancer in one with Scorpio and Pisces. Those groups are two steps apart in its numbering, so the Vashya koota gives its lowest value, 0.5. Varna is the order-sensitive koota. Mesh takes the Kshatriya value and Kark the Brahmin value, which the engine numbers lowest; the point is given when the first entry is at least the second, so Aries first scores 1 and Cancer first 0. The engine records this as unresolved. Varna is used here only as the koota's name and BPHS's sign classification.
What Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi add
The 11-point range comes from the nakshatras. On the Cancer side the engine's Gana table makes Punarvasu and Pushya Deva and Ashlesha Rakshasa; on the Aries side Ashwini is Deva, Bharani Manushya and Krittika Rakshasa. So Ashwini with Ashlesha is a Deva-Rakshasa pair worth 0, while Krittika with Ashlesha, both Rakshasa, is worth the full 6. The labels are technical, not judgements.
For Nadi, the Cancer stars run Aadi (Punarvasu), Madhya (Pushya), Antya (Ashlesha), and the Aries stars run the same sequence (Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika). Each Aries star therefore shares its Nadi with exactly one Cancer star, and that pairing loses 8. Yoni reaches 4 in this pair because Krittika and Pushya are both Sheep in the engine's table. Since all of this rides on the exact star, the nakshatra calculator and Moon sign and nakshatra are the places to start.
Worked example: Aries 1 degree with Cancer 1 degree
One Moon at 1 degree of Aries is in Ashwini. The other at 1 degree of Cancer is in Punarvasu, in the single pada of that star that belongs to Cancer. Entered Aries first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: Kshatriya first, Brahmin second |
| Vashya | 0.5 | 2 | Sign: groups two apart |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: favourable one way |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Horse and Cat |
| Graha Maitri | 4 | 5 | Sign: Mars friendly, Moon neutral |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: Ashwini and Punarvasu both Deva |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | Sign: 4/10 distance |
| Nadi | 0 | 8 | Nakshatra: both Aadi |
| Total | 22 | 36 |
This is the Nadi case described above: Ashwini and Punarvasu are both Aadi, so 8 points go. Everything else that could be full nearly is. The 22 sits three and a half points under the 25.5 median, and the gap is almost entirely that one Nadi result. Moving the Cancer Moon a few degrees on, into Pushya, would change Nadi and Tara and leave all four sign kootas exactly where they are.
A Nadi 0 is often called Nadi dosha; that page explains the term without alarm. And a score of 22 or 30 is a description of two Moon placements, not a decision about two people. Mars placement is a separate check, explained in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not.
What the classical texts in this library say
BPHS describes Mesh and Kark, gives Mars and the Moon their friendships, and explains debilitation. It does not describe Ashtakoot, and neither do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology. No book here comments on Aries with Cancer as a marriage pairing, so this page reports the engine's scoring and names its sources instead. Where a rule rests on web references rather than a book, as Bhakoot and the friend-neutral Graha Maitri value both do, the page says so.

- What Guna Milan score do Aries and Cancer Moons get?
- Between 19 and 30 out of 36 with Aries entered first, median 25.5, and between 18 and 29, median 24.5, with Cancer entered first, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings.
- Are Mars and the Moon friends?
- In the natural relationships of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 as the engine uses them, Mars counts the Moon as a friend and the Moon is neutral to Mars. That friend-neutral pair scores 4 of 5.
- Does Mars being debilitated in Cancer lower the score?
- No. Debilitation describes a planet placed in a sign. Ashtakoot uses only the two Moon signs' lords and their friendship, not where Mars sits in either chart.
- Why did my score change when we swapped names?
- Varna compares the first entry with the second, and for this pair the result flips. The match tool shows each koota so you can see which one moved.
- Is a high Aries-Cancer score a guarantee?
- No. It is a traditional score from two Moon positions, not a forecast. This app does not judge whether two people should marry.
