In short

Two Cancer Moons score from 28 to 34 out of 36 in this app across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, and the median is 28, the same as the minimum. All four sign kootas are full (15 of 15); among the nakshatra kootas Gana is either 6 or 0, because Cancer's stars are only Deva or Rakshasa, and Nadi is shared in 33 of the 81.

Two people with the Moon in Cancer produce one of the narrowest and highest score bands in this app's Ashtakoot engine: nothing below 28 out of 36. The reasons are partly the obvious one - same sign, same lord - and partly a quirk of Cancer's three birth stars, which makes several nakshatra kootas move together rather than independently. Both are explained below with the engine's figures.

The sign is described on the Cancer (Karka) rashi page. The nakshatra matching hub explains the eight kootas and links every pair page, and the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.

Kark as BPHS describes it

BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 10-11 calls Kark pale-red, a forest-dweller, many-footed, bulky, Sattvic, watery, rising with its back, "strong in nights", and ruled by Candr, the Moon itself. It is one of the signs the chapter places in a Varna ("represents Brahmins"), which the engine uses for its class table. Sl. 5-5.5 makes Kark a movable sign and phlegmatic. A Moon in Cancer is therefore in its own sign, though not in its moolatrikona, which Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 places in Vrishabh. Ashtakoot uses none of these dignity distinctions.

Cancer holds nine nakshatra quarters (padas): the last quarter of Punarvasu, the four of Pushya and the four of Ashlesha. Two Cancer Moons can therefore meet in 81 ways, and the ranges below cover all of them.

The kootas this sign pair fixes: 15 of 15

Graha Maitri (the koota) returns 5 for any pair of Moon signs with the same lord; with the Moon ruling both, no friendship table is needed. Bhakoot (the koota) counts the distance between the Moon signs, which is 1 for a same-sign pair and keeps the full 7. Varna (the koota), the one koota where the engine compares person A to person B, cannot differ between two Moons in the same class, so the order of entry never matters here. The word is the koota's technical name and says nothing about people.

The kootas the nakshatras decide

Cancer's three stars have a distinctive profile in the engine's tables. Punarvasu (one quarter) is Deva, Aadi nadi, Cat. Pushya (four) is Deva, Madhya, Sheep. Ashlesha (four) is Rakshasa, Antya, Cat. That profile shapes all four nakshatra kootas:

  • Gana is all or nothing: 6 in 41 pairings, 0 in 40, and never 3. With no Manushya star in Cancer, two Moons are either both Deva, both Rakshasa, or Deva against Rakshasa.
  • Yoni is 4 in 41 and 2 in 40. Punarvasu and Ashlesha share the Cat, so they score 4 against each other as well as against themselves.
  • Nadi is 0 in 33 and 8 in 48. Each star has its own Nadi, so a shared Nadi here always means a shared star.
  • Tara is 3 in 73 and 1.5 in 8.

Now look at how these combine. When both Moons are in the same star, Gana and Yoni are full but Nadi is 0. When one is in Pushya and the other in Ashlesha, Nadi is full but Gana is 0 (Deva against Rakshasa). When one is in Punarvasu and the other in Ashlesha, Yoni is full (both Cat) and Nadi is full, but Gana is 0. The kootas trade points with one another so consistently that the total keeps returning to 28 or just above it, which is why the minimum and the median are both 28.

It is unusual for the nakshatra kootas to be this tightly coupled. In most sign pairs Gana, Yoni and Nadi vary more or less independently, because each sign's stars carry a scatter of animals, ganas and nadis. Cancer's three stars happen to line up so that the animal shared by two of them (the Cat) belongs to one Deva and one Rakshasa star, and the two Deva stars have different nadis. Every gain on one koota is matched by a loss on another, and the coupling is what produces the narrow band.

The 34 at the top needs the rare combination that escapes these trades: Punarvasu with Pushya, both Deva, different Nadi. Since Punarvasu contributes only one quarter to Cancer, that pairing is uncommon among the 81.

The range of totals for two Cancer Moons

Across the 81 pairings the total runs from 28 to 34 out of 36, with a median of 28, in either order of entry. No pairing falls below 28. Among the same-sign pairs, this sits beside Gemini with Gemini (23 to 32.5) and Leo with Leo (28 to 34, median 29.5) in this engine; Cancer's distinctive feature is that its floor and its median coincide.

The contrast with Cancer's water-sign partners is sharp. Cancer with Scorpio, a 5/9 pair, scores 10.5 to 26 in the same engine, and Cancer with Pisces, the other 5/9 water pair, 12 to 26. Those two lose Bhakoot to the distance rule the engine adopted in October 2026; two Cancer Moons, at distance 1, do not. Most of the difference between 28 and the low teens is that single rule, not anything about water signs as such.

A same-sign pair also removes the one source of order-dependence in the engine. For many cross-sign pairs, entering the two people the other way round changes the Varna koota and moves the total by a point. Here every pairing reads the same both ways, so two people comparing results from the app will always see one figure.

This is one sign pair where knowing the stars changes the score only a little. Even so, a birth time is still needed to find them, and the stars also matter for things outside Ashtakoot. The nakshatra calculator finds each person's star, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains how sign and star relate.

Worked example: Cancer 1 degree with Cancer 1 degree

Put both Moons at 1 degree of Cancer. That is the fourth quarter of Punarvasu for each, so the two people share a birth star:

Seven kootas full, Nadi empty: a shared star always means a shared Nadi, and that is what costs the 8 points. The total equals both the minimum and the median for this pair. Traditional practice often treats a same-star match as a special case; Nadi dosha describes what the term means and the exceptions people cite, without this app endorsing any of them.

What the texts say, and what they do not

BPHS Ch. 4 supplies the class the engine gives Cancer, and Ch. 3 Sl. 55 supplies the friendship table the engine uses elsewhere; for a same-sign pair neither makes any difference. The point system itself is absent from every book in this app's library: BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha and Advanced Predictive Astrology. The engine's header names the web references used instead. No book here says anything about two Cancer Moons as a match.

What a score does not tell you

A 28 or a 34 is the output of a rule set applied to two Moon positions. It is not a description of two people and not a recommendation; this app does not say whether anyone should marry. Many families also consider Mars placement, a separate test explained in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. The love compatibility calculator gives a non-Ashtakoot comparison. What Guna Milan score do two Cancer Moons get?
Between 28 and 34 out of 36 in this app across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, with a median of 28.
Why is the median the same as the minimum?
Cancer's stars make the nakshatra kootas trade points: a shared star brings full Gana and Yoni but zero Nadi, while mixing Pushya with Ashlesha brings full Nadi but zero Gana. Many pairings land on 28 as a result.
Why is Gana never 3 for this pair?
Cancer has no Manushya star. Two Cancer Moons are both Deva, both Rakshasa, or one of each, which the engine scores 6, 6 or 0.
Does the order of entry matter?
No. Both Moons are in the same Varna class, so every total is the same in either order.
How do we see our exact score?
Enter both births in the match tool, which reads both nakshatras.
