In short
A Cancer Moon and a Scorpio Moon score from 10.5 to 26 out of 36 in this app, median 20, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, whichever is entered first. The two water signs share Varna and Vashya and Mars befriends the Moon, but Scorpio is the 5th sign from Cancer, so Bhakoot is 0 and the sign kootas give 7 of 15.
Cancer and Scorpio are two water signs in trine, and BPHS gives them the same Varna. Under most sign-level measures they agree. In Ashtakoot matching as this app scores it since October 2026, the trine distance itself costs 7 points, and that one rule explains much of where the pair lands. The rest comes from the birth stars, which here make Gana a simple on-off koota.
Sign pages: Cancer, Karka rashi and Scorpio, Vrishchika rashi. The nakshatra matching hub covers the eight kootas, and the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Kark and Vrischik in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 gives the two signs one striking point in common: Kark "represents Brahmins" (Sl. 10-11) and Vrischik "denotes Brahmins" (the unnumbered passage after Sl. 16.5). They are also both many-footed. Otherwise they differ. Kark is watery, Sattvic, bulky, forest-dwelling, strong at night and ruled by Candr. Vrischik is slender, hairy, reddish-brown, lives in holes, faces north, resorts to water and land, is strong by day, "very sharp (or passionate)", and ruled by Mangal. Sl. 5-5.5 makes Kark movable and Vrischik fixed.
A Cancer Moon is in Punarvasu (its last quarter), Pushya or Ashlesha. A Scorpio Moon is in Vishakha (its last quarter), Anuradha or Jyeshtha. Both signs, as it happens, open with a single quarter of a star that belongs mostly to the previous sign.
The kootas this sign pair fixes: 7 of 15
| Koota | Out of | Cancer with Scorpio | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Same class; the same in either order |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | Same Vashya group |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 4 | Mars lists the Moon as a friend; the Moon is neutral to Mars |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 0 | Scorpio is 5th from Cancer; Cancer 9th from Scorpio |
Graha Maitri (the koota) is nearly full. In the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 relationships stored in the engine, Mars counts the Moon among its friends (with the Sun and Jupiter). The Moon's friends are only the Sun and Mercury, so Mars is neutral from its side. Friend-neutral scores 4, a value all four of the engine's Graha Maitri references agree on.
Varna (the koota) and Vashya (the koota) are both full. Because BPHS puts both signs in the same class, the engine's order-dependent Varna comparison passes either way round, so this pair gives the same total whoever is entered first. Varna is used only as the koota's name for a sign classification.
Bhakoot and the 5/9 change
Bhakoot (the koota) costs all 7 points. Counted inclusively, Scorpio is the 5th sign from Cancer and Cancer the 9th from Scorpio. Until October 2026 the engine gave 5/9 the full 7. It now gives 0, because two published references ([A], [B] in its header) agree that 5/9 belongs with 2/12 and 6/8. The header and docs/numerology-rules.md note that no book in this app's library contains the rule and that other descriptions treat the trine differently. Software using the older reading will show this pair 7 points higher across the board. The zero is commonly called Bhakoot dosha.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
- Gana is 6 in 40 pairings and 0 in 41, never 3. Neither sign has a Manushya star. Cancer's Punarvasu and Pushya are Deva, its Ashlesha Rakshasa; Scorpio's Anuradha is Deva, its Vishakha and Jyeshtha Rakshasa.
- Nadi is 8 in 57 and 0 in 24. The three matching pairs are Punarvasu with Jyeshtha (Aadi), Pushya with Anuradha (Madhya) and Ashlesha with Vishakha (Antya).
- Tara is 3 in 73 of 81 pairings and 1.5 in 8 - unusually favourable.
- Yoni is 2 in all 81: Cat and Sheep against Tiger and Deer, with no shared animal and no enemy pair.
The Pushya-Anuradha meeting is the most instructive. Both are Deva, so Gana is full; both are Madhya, so Nadi is 0. Pushya and Jyeshtha reverse it: Deva against Rakshasa gives Gana 0, Madhya against Aadi keeps Nadi. Ashlesha behaves in mirror image, finding full Gana with Jyeshtha and Vishakha but no Nadi with Vishakha. Very few combinations hold both kootas, and those few are the ones that reach the top of the range.
Ashlesha against Jyeshtha is one of them: both Rakshasa, so Gana is full, and Antya against Aadi, so Nadi is too. Since each of those stars holds four quarters of its sign, that particular meeting accounts for 16 of the 81 pairings - a sizeable share of the upper totals.
Tara deserves a sentence of its own because it is so steady here. The koota counts from one birth star to the other and back, inclusively, and treats a count leaving 3, 5 or 7 after division by 9 as unfavourable. Cancer's stars and Scorpio's sit about nine or ten stars apart, which puts most counts on favourable remainders in both directions. That is why 73 of the 81 pairings score the full 3. It is a geometric accident of where the two signs' stars fall, not a property of water signs, and it does not carry over to other water pairings in any simple way.
The range of totals
Across the 81 pairings the total runs from 10.5 to 26 out of 36, median 20, identical in either order. The fixed sign contribution of 7 is lower than the pair's affinities suggest, because of Bhakoot. The ceiling of 26 means a full Gana, a different Nadi and a full Tara on top of those 7.
The same engine gives Cancer with Pisces, the other water trine, 12 to 26, median 23, and Scorpio's own same-sign pair would keep Bhakoot. Within Cancer's list, compare Cancer with Cancer at 28 to 34: same element, same Varna, but distance 1 instead of 5/9. Most of the gap between those two pages is one 7-point rule.
Which star each Moon occupies decides the rest, and that needs a birth time. The nakshatra calculator finds it; Moon sign and nakshatra explains the two readings of one Moon.
Worked example: Cancer 1 degree with Scorpio 1 degree
A Moon at 1 degree of Cancer is in Punarvasu; a Moon at 1 degree of Scorpio is in Vishakha. Each is in the single quarter its sign borrows from the star before:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: same class |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | Sign: same group |
| Tara | 3 | 3 | Nakshatra: counts 10 and 19, both favourable |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Cat and Tiger |
| Graha Maitri | 4 | 5 | Sign: Moon neutral, Mars friendly |
| Gana | 0 | 6 | Nakshatra: Deva with Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 5/9 |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Aadi with Antya |
| Total | 20 | 36 |
The example lands exactly on the median of 20. Signs give 7, stars 13. Nadi and Tara are full; Gana is the loss, Punarvasu being Deva and Vishakha Rakshasa. A Scorpio Moon a few degrees later, in Anuradha, would turn Gana to 6 while keeping Nadi (Aadi against Madhya), lifting this pairing towards the top of the range.
What the classical texts say
BPHS supplies the shared Varna (Ch. 4) and Mars's friendship with the Moon (Ch. 3 Sl. 55), both of which help this pair. It does not supply the Ashtakoot points or the Bhakoot rule that cancels 7 of them, and neither do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha or Advanced Predictive Astrology. No book in the library comments on Cancer and Scorpio Moons as a match.
What a score does not tell you
A 10.5 or a 26 is how two Moon positions meet a convention, one whose treatment of this very distance changed this year. It is not a verdict on two people; this app gives none. Mars placement is a separate check, explained in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. Nadi dosha covers the shared-Nadi result. The love compatibility calculator gives a lighter comparison. Related pairs: Cancer and Pisces, Cancer and Libra and Cancer and Sagittarius.
- What is the Guna Milan score for a Cancer Moon and a Scorpio Moon?
- 10.5 to 26 out of 36 in this app, median 20, in either order of entry.
- Why is Bhakoot 0 for two water signs?
- Scorpio is the 5th sign from Cancer. Since October 2026 the engine scores 5/9 distances as 0, following two web references; it previously gave 7.
- Why is Gana either 6 or 0?
- Neither sign contains a Manushya star, so every pairing is same-gana or Deva against Rakshasa. Gana is 6 in 40 pairings and 0 in 41.
- Does the order of entry change the result?
- No. BPHS places both signs in the same Varna class, so the engine's order-dependent koota gives 1 either way.
- How do we get our exact score?
- Enter both births in the match tool; the birth stars carry 21 of the 36 points.
