Vashya koota defined: the second matching koota, worth two points, read from the two Moon signs through five groups, and how this app scores it.

In short

Vashya koota is the second of the eight Ashtakoot matching factors and is worth two points. It places each Moon sign in one of five groups and scores 2 for the same group, 1 for neighbouring groups and half a point otherwise. In this app it can never score zero.

What the term means

Vashya means "control" or "influence", and Vashya koota is the koota that traditionally asks which partner tends to lead the other. The app's own one-line description of it is "who naturally leads decisions between you". It is worth two points of the 36 in guna milan and is read from the two Moon signs only.

Where the term comes from

The texts in this app's library are silent on it: a search of BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha and Advanced Predictive Astrology finds no Vashya rule. Like the rest of Ashtakoot, it comes from the published references the project adopted, and the project's rules document lists Vashya among the kootas left unchanged when those references were reviewed in 2026.

How this app computes it

  • Each of the twelve Moon signs belongs to one of five groups in the engine's table. The groups are numbered in the code, not named.
  • Both Moons in the same group score 2.
  • Groups whose numbers differ by one in that table score 1.
  • Any other pair scores 0.5, so Vashya never contributes zero.
  • Because it depends on the Moon sign and not the nakshatra, it is only in doubt when a Moon sign changes during an untimed birth day. It counts in marriage matching, not in the business or friendship score.

A small illustration

Aries and Taurus share a group, so an Aries Moon with a Taurus Moon scores the full 2. Aries with Leo falls in neighbouring groups and scores 1, which is what the engine gives for a Moon at 1 degree of Aries against one at 1 degree of Leo. Gemini with Leo is neither, and scores 0.5.
