In short
A Gemini Moon with a Cancer Moon scores 13 to 24 out of 36 in this app, median 19.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings with Gemini entered first. The signs are neighbours, a 2/12 distance that sets Bhakoot to 0, and Mercury and the Moon only half agree, so the sign kootas give 5 of 15; entering Cancer first lowers every total by 1.
Gemini and Cancer sit side by side in the zodiac, and in Ashtakoot matching being neighbours is not an advantage. The two signs fix four of the eight kootas, and for this pair those four contribute little. The open question is how much the two birth stars can recover. This page sets out both halves with the engine's own numbers.
For the signs on their own, read Gemini, Mithuna rashi and Cancer, Karka rashi. The nakshatra matching guide covers the eight kootas in general, and the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Mithun and Kark in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 draws the two signs very differently. Mithun (Sl. 9-9.5) is airy, two-footed, at home in villages, ruled by Budh (Mercury), shown as a couple holding a mace and a lute. Kark (Sl. 10-11) is watery and Sattvic, many-footed, bulky, resorting to forests, "strong in nights", and ruled by Candr (the Moon). Sl. 5-5.5 calls Mithun "mixed" in temperament and puts Kark among the phlegmatic signs. Kark is also one of the signs the chapter assigns to a Varna, saying it "represents Brahmins"; Mithun is given none and takes its element's class in the engine's table.
The Moon in Gemini can be in Mrigashira (two quarters), Ardra (four) or Punarvasu (three). The Moon in Cancer can be in the last quarter of Punarvasu, all of Pushya or all of Ashlesha. So Punarvasu straddles the boundary: a Gemini Moon and a Cancer Moon can share a birth star even though their signs differ.
The kootas this sign pair fixes, and why they come to 5
| Koota | Out of | Gemini first | Cancer first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | 0 | Different classes; the engine compares A with B |
| Vashya | 2 | 1 | 1 | Adjacent groups in the engine's Vashya table |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 3 | 3 | Mercury lists the Moon as an enemy; the Moon lists Mercury as a friend |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 0 | 0 | A 2/12 distance |
| Sign total | 15 | 5 | 4 |
Bhakoot: the 2/12 count
Bhakoot (the koota) counts inclusively from one Moon sign to the other. Gemini to Cancer is 2; Cancer back to Gemini is 12. The engine scores 0 whenever either count is 2, 12, 5, 9, 6 or 8, so a pair of adjacent signs always loses all 7 points. Unlike the 5/9 case, the 2/12 rule was in this engine before the October 2026 revision; the header cites two web references ([A] and [B]) that agree on it, since no book in this app's library contains the rule. A 0 here is what people call Bhakoot dosha.
Graha Maitri: a one-sided friendship
This is the most interesting koota for the pair. In the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 relationships the engine uses, the Moon counts Mercury among its friends, but Mercury counts the Moon as an enemy. The engine calls that a friend-enemy pairing and scores it 3 of 5. The header is frank that this is a holdover: the references disagree on friend-enemy (two give 1, one gives 2), so the engine kept its earlier value until a single table is chosen. Other software may therefore show a lower Graha Maitri for this pair.
Varna: order matters for this pair
Varna (the koota) is the one koota in the engine that is not symmetric. It gives 1 when the first Moon's class sits at the same place as, or later than, the second Moon's in its four-item list, and 0 otherwise. Gemini's class comes later in that list than Cancer's, so Gemini entered first scores 1 and Cancer entered first scores 0. The header lists this as an open point (#36). The word Varna here is only the koota's technical name; it describes sign classes in a text, not people.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
The other 21 points rest on the birth stars. For this pair they are fairly generous:
- Nadi is 8 in 66 of the 81 pairings and 0 in 15. The shared-Nadi cases are a Mrigashira Moon with a Pushya Moon (both Madhya), and an Ardra or Punarvasu Moon with the single Cancer quarter of Punarvasu (all Aadi).
- Gana takes all three values: 6 in 25 pairings, 3 in 36 and 0 in 20. The 0 cases are the Deva stars of Gemini (Mrigashira, Punarvasu) meeting Ashlesha, which the engine lists as Rakshasa.
- Yoni is 4 in 15 pairings and 2 in the rest. Punarvasu and Ashlesha share the Cat, so a Gemini Punarvasu Moon meets the same animal in five of Cancer's nine quarters. None of the animals here are listed as enemies, so Yoni never reaches 0.
- Tara is 3 in 19 pairings and 1.5 in 62, never 0.
The shared star across the border is worth a moment. When a Gemini Moon in Punarvasu meets the Cancer quarter of Punarvasu, the two people have the same birth star in different signs. Yoni and Gana then come out full, since the animal and the gana are the same, but Nadi falls to 0 for the same reason. The sign kootas do not change at all: they still see Gemini and Cancer, with their 2/12 distance. It is a neat illustration of how the two halves of the system read different things.
The range of totals
With Gemini entered first, the 81 totals run from 13 to 24 out of 36, median 19.5. With Cancer entered first every total drops by exactly 1 (12 to 23, median 18.5), because only Varna changes. Compared with the other Gemini pages, the ceiling here is low: the sign kootas start the pair at 5, so even a perfect nakshatra result cannot reach the high twenties.
Since nakshatras carry most of the variation, a birth time matters. A Gemini Moon late on one day can be in Ardra and early on the next in Punarvasu, and that single move changes Nadi, Gana and Yoni together. The nakshatra calculator shows each person's star; Moon sign and nakshatra explains the two layers.
Worked example: Gemini 1 degree with Cancer 1 degree
Place one Moon at 1 degree of Gemini, which is Mrigashira, and the other at 1 degree of Cancer, which is Punarvasu. Entering Gemini first, ashtakoot() gives:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: Gemini entered first |
| Vashya | 1 | 2 | Sign: adjacent groups |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: count 3 one way (unfavourable), 26 the other (favourable) |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Serpent and Cat |
| Graha Maitri | 3 | 5 | Sign: Mercury and Moon, friend-enemy |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: Deva with Deva |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 2/12 |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Madhya with Aadi |
| Total | 22.5 | 36 |
The sign kootas give 5 and the nakshatras give 17.5, which is near the top of what they can give for this pair: full Gana and full Nadi. That is why this example, at 22.5, sits well above the 19.5 median. Tara is the only nakshatra koota short of its maximum, because Punarvasu is the third star counted from Mrigashira.
What the classical texts say about this pairing
The library's books describe both signs and the friendships of their lords, and the engine takes its Varna classes and Graha Maitri relations from them. None of them - BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha, Advanced Predictive Astrology - sets out the Ashtakoot points, and none comments on a Gemini Moon marrying a Cancer Moon. The scoring here is the engine's implementation of common practice, with its web sources listed in the code.
What a score does not tell you
A Bhakoot of 0 or a total in the teens is the output of a rule set, not a description of two people, and this app gives no verdict on whether anyone should marry. Mars placement is a separate traditional check; see Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. The love compatibility calculator gives a lighter, non-Ashtakoot comparison. - What is the Guna Milan score for a Gemini Moon and a Cancer Moon?
- From 13 to 24 out of 36 in this app, median 19.5, with Gemini entered first. Entered the other way the range is 12 to 23. The nakshatras decide where in that range a couple falls.
- Why is Bhakoot 0?
- Cancer is the 2nd sign from Gemini and Gemini the 12th from Cancer. The engine scores 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 distances as 0, following two web references named in its header.
- Why is Graha Maitri 3 rather than 5?
- In BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 as the engine reads it, the Moon treats Mercury as a friend but Mercury treats the Moon as an enemy. The engine scores that 3; references disagree, giving 1 or 2.
- Why does the order of entry change the total?
- Varna compares the first Moon with the second. Gemini first passes, Cancer first does not, so the totals differ by exactly 1 point.
- Can we know our score from Moon signs alone?
- No. The nakshatras carry 21 of the 36 points. Enter both birth details in the match tool for the full reading.
