In short
A Gemini Moon and a Leo Moon score from 19 to 30 out of 36 in this app, with a median of 25, over all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings entered Gemini first. The 3/11 distance keeps Bhakoot at 7 and Mercury with the Sun gives 4, so the sign kootas supply 12.5 of 15; entering Leo first lowers each total by 1 through Varna.
An air sign and a fire sign two places apart: Gemini and Leo is one of the pairs where the sign half of Guna Milan does most of its work in the couple's favour. That still leaves the nakshatra half, which for this pair contains one specific trap in the Yoni koota. The numbers below are what this app's engine returns, not general astrology lore.
The signs are described on Gemini, Mithuna rashi and Leo, Simha rashi. The nakshatra matching hub introduces the eight kootas, and the Kundli matching calculator runs the full score on two charts.
Two signs, night and day
BPHS Ch. 4 offers a clean contrast. Mithun (Sl. 9-9.5) is airy, two-footed, village-dwelling, "strong in nights" and ruled by Budh. Simh (Sl. 12) is ruled by Surya, Sattvic, four-footed, "a royal Rasi", forest-dwelling and strong during the day. In Sl. 5-5.5 Mithun is "mixed" and Simh is bilious. The engine uses one consequence of this chapter: Simh's royal description places Leo in the Kshatriya class of its Varna table, while Mithun, which the text gives no class, takes the air signs' value.
A Gemini Moon sits in Mrigashira, Ardra or Punarvasu; a Leo Moon in Magha, Purva Phalguni or the first quarter of Uttara Phalguni. No star is shared, which matters for Nadi and Yoni below.
The kootas the two Moon signs fix: 12.5 of 15
| Koota | Out of | Gemini first | Leo first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | 0 | Classes differ; the engine compares A with B |
| Vashya | 2 | 0.5 | 0.5 | Groups two steps apart in the engine's table |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 4 | 4 | Mercury counts the Sun a friend; the Sun is neutral to Mercury |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | 7 | A 3/11 distance, not a zero distance |
| Sign total | 15 | 12.5 | 11.5 |
Bhakoot (the koota) is the large one. Leo is the 3rd sign from Gemini and Gemini the 11th from Leo. The engine's zero list is 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, taken from two web references in its header because the library's classical books do not contain the rule, and 3/11 is not on it. So all 7 points stay in every pairing.
Graha Maitri (the koota) reads the two lords. In the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 lists the engine carries, Mercury names the Sun as a friend, while the Sun names Mercury as neither friend nor enemy. Friend-neutral is one of the cells all four of the engine's references agree on, at 4 points; it was 3 before the October 2026 revision.
Vashya (the koota) gives 2 for the same group, 1 for adjacent groups and 0.5 otherwise; Gemini and Leo fall into the last case. Varna (the koota) gives 1 with Gemini entered first and 0 with Leo first, because the engine compares the first Moon's class with the second's; the header records this as an unresolved point. Varna is the koota's technical name for a sign classification and is not a statement about people.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
- Tara is 1.5 in all 81 pairings. Whichever Gemini star meets whichever Leo star, one of the two counts lands on an unfavourable number and the other does not, so Tara behaves like a fixed koota for this pair.
- Yoni is 2 in 57 pairings and 0 in 24. Punarvasu's animal is the Cat, and Magha and Purva Phalguni both carry the Rat; the engine lists Cat and Rat as enemies. Every Punarvasu Moon of Gemini meeting either of those Leo stars loses all four Yoni points.
- Gana is 6 in 20, 3 in 41 and 0 in 20. The 0 cases are Gemini's Deva stars (Mrigashira, Punarvasu) meeting Magha, which is Rakshasa.
- Nadi is 8 in 66 pairings and 0 in 15: Mrigashira with Purva Phalguni (both Madhya), or Ardra and Punarvasu with Uttara Phalguni (all Aadi).
Notice how the trouble concentrates in one star. A Gemini Moon in Punarvasu facing a Leo Moon in Magha meets a Yoni of 0 and a Gana of 0 at once, while a Gemini Moon in Ardra facing the same Magha Moon meets neither. That is the kind of difference a few hours of birth time can make.
The range of totals
Entered Gemini first, the 81 totals run from 19 to 30 out of 36, median 25. Entered Leo first, each is 1 lower: 18 to 29, median 24. With 12.5 points already in hand from the signs, even the weakest pairing stays in the high teens; the top of the range needs a matching Gana and a different Nadi together.
For perspective among Gemini's pairings in the same engine: a Gemini Moon with a Gemini Moon runs 23 to 32.5, with Virgo 20 to 34, and with Scorpio 6.5 to 22 (each with Gemini entered first). Leo sits in the upper middle of that family, held up mainly by Bhakoot. The comparison says something about how the rules treat these sign distances; it says nothing about what Gemini or Leo people are like.
A word on why Tara never changes here. Tara counts from the first birth star to the second and back again, inclusively, and checks each count against the nine-star cycle; remainders of 3, 5 and 7 are the unfavourable ones. Gemini's three stars and Leo's three stars are spaced so that, for every combination, exactly one of the two counts falls on such a remainder. The result is a steady 1.5, neither the best nor the worst Tara can give.
To place a real couple in that range you need both birth stars, which means birth times. The nakshatra calculator finds them; Moon sign and nakshatra explains why the sign and the star are two separate readings of one Moon.
Worked example: Gemini 1 degree with Leo 1 degree
One Moon at 1 degree of Gemini (Mrigashira), the other at 1 degree of Leo (Magha), Gemini entered first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: Gemini entered first |
| Vashya | 0.5 | 2 | Sign: groups two apart |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: count 6 forward (favourable), 23 back (unfavourable) |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Serpent and Rat, not enemies |
| Graha Maitri | 4 | 5 | Sign: Mercury and Sun, friend-neutral |
| Gana | 0 | 6 | Nakshatra: Deva with Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | Sign: 3/11 |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Madhya with Antya |
| Total | 24 | 36 |
The signs contribute their usual 12.5 and the nakshatras 11.5. The Gana result is what keeps this example a point under the median of 25: Mrigashira is a Deva star and Magha a Rakshasa one, the single combination the engine scores 0. Had the Leo Moon been a few degrees further on, in Purva Phalguni, Gana would have improved and Nadi would have dropped to 0 instead - the nakshatra kootas often trade points like this.
What the classical texts say
BPHS supplies the sign descriptions and the planetary friendships that two of the engine's tables are built on. It does not contain the Ashtakoot points, and neither do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha or Advanced Predictive Astrology in this app's library. There is no classical comment on Gemini with Leo as a match to report, so this page reports none.
What a score does not tell you
A total of 19 or 30 is a measurement against a rule set. It does not describe two people, and this app does not advise anyone whether to marry. Mars placement is assessed separately; Mangal dosha: what it is and is not explains how. For the two kootas people ask about most, see Nadi dosha and Bhakoot dosha. The love compatibility calculator is a lighter alternative. Related pairs: Gemini and Cancer, Gemini and Virgo and Leo and Leo.
- What is the Guna Milan score for a Gemini Moon and a Leo Moon?
- In this app, 19 to 30 out of 36 with Gemini entered first (median 25), or 18 to 29 with Leo first. The birth stars set the exact figure.
- Is Bhakoot a problem for Gemini and Leo?
- No. The signs are 3 and 11 apart, which the engine scores the full 7. Only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 distances score 0.
- Why is Yoni sometimes 0 for this pair?
- A Gemini Moon in Punarvasu has the Cat as its Yoni animal, and Leo's Magha and Purva Phalguni have the Rat. The engine treats Cat and Rat as enemies, so those 24 pairings score 0.
- Why do I get a different total when I swap the two people?
- The engine's Varna koota compares the first Moon with the second. Gemini first scores 1 and Leo first scores 0; the other seven kootas are unchanged.
- Does a good sign-level score mean a good match?
- It means the sign kootas are favourable under this rule set, nothing more. For the full eight-koota reading enter both births in the match tool.
