In short
A Gemini Moon and a Virgo Moon score 20 to 34 out of 36 in this app, median 24.5, over all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings entered Gemini first. Both signs are ruled by Mercury and sit 4/10 apart, so the sign kootas give 15 of 15 (14 with Virgo entered first); the spread comes from the nakshatras, above all a shared Nadi in 53 of the 81.
Gemini and Virgo are the two signs ruled by Mercury, and that shared lordship makes them one of the strongest sign pairs in Ashtakoot matching as this app scores it. The sign kootas come close to their full 15. Yet the totals still range over fourteen points, because half the system ignores signs and reads birth stars instead. Here is how both halves work out for this pair.
See Gemini, Mithuna rashi and Virgo, Kanya rashi for the signs themselves, the nakshatra matching hub for the eight kootas, and the Kundli matching calculator to score two real charts.
Mithun and Kanya: one lord, two characters
BPHS Ch. 4 gives the two Mercury signs quite different portraits. Mithun (Sl. 9-9.5) is airy, two-footed, at home in villages, strong at night, pictured as a couple with a mace and a lute. Kanya (Sl. 13-14) is a hill-resorter strong by day, a Virgin carrying "grains and fire in its hands", Tamasic, and said to belong to the business community. Sl. 5-5.5 calls Mithun "mixed" and Kanya "windy". Both, the chapter notes, are biped signs ruled by Budh.
Gemini's Moon may be in Mrigashira, Ardra or Punarvasu; Virgo's in Uttara Phalguni (three quarters), Hasta (four) or Chitra (two). With nine padas on each side, there are 81 combinations to score.
The kootas this sign pair fixes
| Koota | Out of | Gemini first | Virgo first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | 0 | Different classes; the engine compares A with B |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | 2 | Both signs in the same Vashya group |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | 5 | One lord, Mercury, on both sides |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | 7 | A 4/10 distance, which the engine does not zero |
| Sign total | 15 | 15 | 14 |
Graha Maitri (the koota) is decided before any friendship list is opened: if the two Moon signs share a lord, the engine gives 5. Both signs belong to Mercury, so the result is fixed. Bhakoot (the koota) counts the distance: Virgo is the 4th sign from Gemini, Gemini the 10th from Virgo. That is a square in Western terms, but the Ashtakoot rule the engine follows only zeroes 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, so 4/10 keeps all 7 points.
The one sign koota that can slip is Varna (the koota). The engine gives 1 when the first Moon's class is at the same position as the second's or later in its list, and Gemini's class comes after Virgo's. Entered Gemini first, Varna is 1; entered Virgo first, 0. The engine header flags this order dependence as unresolved, and no reference it consulted settles it. As everywhere on this site, Varna is the technical name of a koota built from BPHS sign classes, not a judgement on anyone.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
- Nadi is the big variable: 0 in 53 of the 81 pairings, 8 in 28. Ardra and Punarvasu of Gemini, and Uttara Phalguni and Hasta of Virgo, are all Aadi nadi, so most combinations share a Nadi. The rest of the 53 are Mrigashira meeting Chitra, both Madhya.
- Gana is 6 in 32, 3 in 39 and 0 in 10. Chitra is Virgo's only Rakshasa star, so the 0 cases are Gemini's Deva stars meeting Chitra.
- Yoni is 2 in every pairing. Gemini's animals (Serpent, Dog, Cat) and Virgo's (Cow, Buffalo, Tiger) never coincide and include no enemy pairs in the engine's table.
- Tara is 3 in 20 pairings and 1.5 in 61.
The pattern is easy to state. A Gemini Moon in Mrigashira will usually keep Nadi, because Mrigashira is Madhya and most of Virgo is Aadi. A Gemini Moon in Ardra or Punarvasu will usually lose it, for the opposite reason. Gana pulls the other way only when Chitra is involved. So for this pair, which Gemini star the first Moon occupies tends to matter more than which Virgo star the second one does.
The range of totals
Gemini first, the 81 totals run from 20 to 34 out of 36, median 24.5. Virgo first, 19 to 33, median 23.5 - one point lower throughout, all of it Varna. The ceiling of 34 is among the highest any cross-sign pair in this engine reaches, because the signs already supply 15; the median is held down by the frequent shared Nadi, which costs 8 points at a stroke.
Compare the pair with its Mercury-lord cousins elsewhere in Gemini's list: Gemini with Gemini runs 23 to 32.5 and Gemini with Libra 13 to 27, the latter losing Bhakoot at a 5/9 distance. The difference between Gemini-Virgo and Gemini-Libra is almost entirely that one distance rule.
Knowing whether a particular couple shares a Nadi requires both birth stars, so a birth time matters more for this pair than for most. Use the nakshatra calculator to find them; Moon sign and nakshatra explains the relationship between the two.
Worked example: Gemini 1 degree with Virgo 1 degree
A Moon at 1 degree of Gemini is in Mrigashira; a Moon at 1 degree of Virgo is in Uttara Phalguni. Entered Gemini first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: Gemini entered first |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | Sign: same group |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: count 8 forward (favourable), 21 back (unfavourable) |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Serpent and Cow |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | Sign: Mercury with Mercury |
| Gana | 3 | 6 | Nakshatra: Deva with Manushya |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | Sign: 4/10 |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Madhya with Aadi |
| Total | 29.5 | 36 |
This example lands five points above the median because it is the favourable Nadi case: Mrigashira (Madhya) against Uttara Phalguni (Aadi). Move the Gemini Moon a few degrees on into Ardra and the same Virgo Moon would share the Aadi nadi, taking 8 points away while leaving every sign koota untouched.
What the classical texts say
BPHS gives the engine its sign classes (Ch. 4) and its friendship table (Ch. 3 Sl. 55), though for two Mercury signs the friendship table is never consulted. The scoring rules themselves are absent from every book in this app's library: BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha and Advanced Predictive Astrology. Nothing in them comments on a Gemini Moon with a Virgo Moon, and this page does not invent such a comment.
One classical detail is worth knowing because it is easy to assume it matters here. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 divides Kanya three ways for Budh: the first 15 degrees are his exaltation zone, the next 5 his moolatrikona, the last 10 his own sign. Gemini is simply his own sign. Ashtakoot as the engine implements it does not look at any of this. Graha Maitri asks only which graha rules each Moon sign, so a Moon at 10 degrees of Virgo and one at 25 degrees score identically against a Gemini Moon.
It is also worth reading the low end of the range correctly. The 20 at the bottom is not produced by any sign koota failing; with Gemini entered first those are already full. It comes from the birth stars: a shared Nadi together with a Gana of 0, which can only happen when a Mrigashira Moon meets a Chitra Moon. Two people with this sign pair and a modest total are therefore looking at a nakshatra story, and the nakshatra pages, not the sign pages, are where the explanation lives.
What a score does not tell you
A total in the thirties is not a promise, and a total of 20 is not a warning; both are the arithmetic of one tradition applied to two Moons. This app does not say whether two people should marry. Mars placement is checked separately - see Mangal dosha: what it is and is not - and Nadi dosha discusses the shared-Nadi result in detail. A lighter comparison is the love compatibility calculator. Nearby pairs: Gemini and Leo and Gemini and Libra.
- What Guna Milan score do a Gemini Moon and a Virgo Moon get?
- Between 20 and 34 out of 36 in this app with Gemini entered first (median 24.5), or 19 to 33 with Virgo first.
- Why are the sign kootas so high for this pair?
- Both signs are ruled by Mercury, which gives the full 5 for Graha Maitri; they share a Vashya group; and their 4/10 distance keeps the full 7 for Bhakoot.
- Why do so many Gemini-Virgo pairings lose Nadi?
- Four of the six stars involved (Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta) are Aadi nadi. Two Moons in the same Nadi score 0 of 8, which happens in 53 of the 81 pairings.
- Does swapping the two people change the score?
- By one point. The engine's Varna koota compares the first Moon to the second: Gemini first scores 1, Virgo first 0.
- Where can we get our actual score?
- Enter both birth dates, times and places in the match tool; the nakshatras need the birth times.
