In short

A Gemini Moon and a Libra Moon score from 13 to 27 out of 36 in this app, median 24, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, in either order. Mercury and Venus are mutual friends and the signs share Varna and Vashya, but Libra is the 5th sign from Gemini, so Bhakoot is 0 and the sign kootas give 8 of 15.

Gemini and Libra are both air signs, a trine apart, ruled by two grahas that count each other as friends. On most measures of sign affinity that is as good as it gets. Ashtakoot matching as this app now scores it disagrees on one point: the trine itself. The 5/9 distance zeroes the heaviest sign koota, and that single rule shapes everything else on this page.

The signs have their own pages: Gemini, Mithuna rashi and Libra, Tula rashi. The nakshatra matching guide explains the eight kootas, and the Kundli matching calculator gives a real couple's score from their charts.

Mithun and Tula in BPHS

The two signs share several features in BPHS Ch. 4. Both are biped and both face west: Mithun "lives in the West" (Sl. 9-9.5) and Tula "relates to the western direction" (Sl. 15-16.5). Sl. 5-5.5 groups them, with Kumbh, as the "mixed" signs. They differ in rhythm - Mithun is strong at night, Tula by day and predominant in Rajo-Gun - and in rulership, Budh for one and Sukr for the other. Tula is one of the signs the chapter places in a Varna; Mithun is not, and the engine gives it the class of its element, which is the same as Tula's.

A Gemini Moon falls in Mrigashira, Ardra or Punarvasu. A Libra Moon falls in the last two quarters of Chitra, the four of Swati, or the first three of Vishakha. That gives 81 pairings in all.

The kootas the two signs fix: 8 of 15

KootaOut ofGemini with LibraWhy
Varna11Same class, so the result is the same in either order
Vashya22Same Vashya group

Three of the four are full. Graha Maitri (the koota) reads the lords: in the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 friendships the engine carries, Mercury lists Venus as a friend and Venus lists Mercury, which scores 5. Vashya and Varna are full because both signs sit in the same group and the same class.

Bhakoot and the 5/9 decision

Bhakoot (the koota) is where the pair loses 7 points in every pairing. Counted inclusively, Libra is the 5th sign from Gemini and Gemini the 9th from Libra. Until October 2026 this engine scored that distance 7. It now scores it 0, because two published references ([A] and [B] in the engine header) agree that 5/9 belongs with 2/12 and 6/8 among the zero distances. The header and docs/numerology-rules.md record the change, and say plainly that no book in this app's library contains the rule, and that some descriptions treat the trine differently.

So for this pair, the version of the rule matters a great deal. Software that keeps the older reading will show every Gemini-Libra total 7 points higher than this app does. Neither figure is a measurement of anything outside the rule. A zero here is commonly labelled Bhakoot dosha; that page discusses the term and the exceptions people cite.

The kootas the nakshatras decide

  • Gana carries most of the variation: 6 in 20 pairings, 3 in 36, 0 in 25. Libra holds two Rakshasa stars (Chitra and Vishakha), and Gemini two Deva stars (Mrigashira and Punarvasu), so the Deva-Rakshasa combination that scores 0 is common.
  • Nadi is 8 in 77 of 81 pairings. Only Mrigashira meeting Chitra, both Madhya, shares a Nadi. Gemini's other stars are Aadi and Libra's others are Antya, so they never coincide.
  • Tara is 3 in 69 pairings and 1.5 in 12.
  • Yoni is 2 throughout: Serpent, Dog and Cat on one side, Tiger and Buffalo on the other, with no shared animal and no enemy pair.

In other words, Nadi - usually the most feared koota - is almost never a factor for this pair, and Gana does the work that Nadi does elsewhere. A Gemini Moon in Ardra, which the engine counts as Manushya, cannot get Gana 0 against any Libra star; a Gemini Moon in Mrigashira or Punarvasu gets 0 against five of Libra's nine quarters.

Ardra's gana is itself a recent change. The engine listed Ardra as Rakshasa until October 2026 and moved it to Manushya when three references agreed. Under the old assignment, an Ardra Moon meeting Chitra or Vishakha would have scored full Gana rather than 3, and against Swati 0 rather than 3. The current numbers on this page use the revised table.

The range of totals

Across the 81 pairings the total runs from 13 to 27 out of 36, with a median of 24, and the order of entry makes no difference. The spread is wide for a pair whose sign kootas never vary, and almost all of it is Gana plus the rare shared Nadi. The 27 ceiling is low compared with what a full Bhakoot would allow, which is the arithmetic consequence of the 5/9 rule.

Gemini's other air trine behaves the same way at the sign level but lands lower overall: Gemini with Aquarius scores 12 to 23, median 15, because Mercury and Saturn give 4 rather than 5 and Aquarius brings more Rakshasa and shared-Nadi combinations. Gemini with Virgo, a 4/10 pair under the same lord, reaches 34. Set side by side, the three show how much a single distance rule can move a sign pair's whole range, independent of how well the two lords get on.

Where a couple falls depends on the two birth stars. The nakshatra calculator finds a star from a birth date, time and place; Moon sign and nakshatra explains how sign and star relate.

Worked example: Gemini 1 degree with Libra 1 degree

A Moon at 1 degree of Gemini is in Mrigashira, and one at 1 degree of Libra is in Chitra. This happens to be the weakest combination the pair can produce:

ashtakoot() for Gemini 1 deg with Libra 1 deg (engine-facts.mjs, run 2026-10-14). Entered Libra first, also 13.

Three zeros stack up here: Bhakoot from the signs, and Gana and Nadi from the stars. Mrigashira with Chitra is one of only four pairings that share a Nadi, and it also meets a Rakshasa star. Moving the Libra Moon on into Swati would change both at once - Swati is Deva and Antya - which shows how sharply the total depends on a few degrees of the Moon.

What the classical texts say

The engine borrows sign classes from BPHS Ch. 4 and friendships from Ch. 3 Sl. 55; both work in this pair's favour. The Bhakoot rule that works against it is not in BPHS or in any other book in the library (Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha, Advanced Predictive Astrology). It comes from web references, as the engine says. No classical text here comments on a Gemini Moon marrying a Libra Moon.

What a score does not tell you

A 13 or a 27 describes how two Moon positions meet a scoring convention - one whose own handling of this exact distance changed this year. It is not a verdict on two people, and this app offers none. Mars placement is checked separately; see Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. The rare shared-Nadi case is discussed in Nadi dosha. For a lighter comparison try the love compatibility calculator. Nearby pairs: Gemini and Virgo, Gemini and Scorpio and Gemini and Aquarius, the other air trine.

What is the Guna Milan score for a Gemini Moon and a Libra Moon?
Between 13 and 27 out of 36 in this app, median 24, in either order. The nakshatras decide where a couple falls.
Why is Bhakoot 0 when the signs are a trine apart?
The engine follows two web references that count 5/9 among the zero distances, with 2/12 and 6/8. It scored 5/9 as 7 until October 2026. Other software may still use the older rule.
Is Nadi dosha likely for Gemini and Libra?
Rarely. Only a Mrigashira Moon with a Chitra Moon shares a Nadi, in 4 of the 81 pairings. Gana is the koota that varies most for this pair.
Does it matter who is entered first?
No. Both signs are in the same Varna class, so the result is identical in both orders.
How do we get our real score?
Enter both birth details in the match tool; it reads the nakshatras as well as the signs.
