In short

A Gemini Moon and an Aquarius Moon score from 12 to 23 out of 36 in this app, median 15, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, in either order. The signs share Varna and Vashya and Saturn befriends Mercury, but Aquarius is the 9th sign from Gemini, so Bhakoot is 0; a shared Nadi in 53 of the 81 pairings keeps the median low.

Gemini and Aquarius are two air signs in trine, and much of what the sign half of Ashtakoot matching measures comes out in their favour. Two things pull the score down instead: a distance rule that this engine adopted in October 2026, and a run of shared Nadis between the two signs' birth stars. The result is a pair whose median sits lower than its sign affinity would suggest. Here is the arithmetic.

The signs: Gemini, Mithuna rashi and Aquarius, Kumbha rashi. The system: the nakshatra matching hub. Two real charts: the Kundli matching calculator.

Mithun and Kumbh in BPHS

In BPHS Ch. 4 the two signs share a surprising amount. Both are airy and biped, both are said to rise with the head, and both belong to the west: Mithun "lives in the West" (Sl. 9-9.5) and Kumbh rules "the West" (Sl. 21-21.5). Sl. 5-5.5 places them, with Tula, among the "mixed" signs. The differences are rhythm and rulership: Mithun is strong at night and ruled by Budh; Kumbh, "a man holding a pot", is very strong by day, resorts to deep water, is Tamasic, and is ruled by Sani. Kumbh is one of the signs the chapter assigns to a Varna, and the engine gives Mithun, which has none, the same class as its fellow air sign.

An Aquarius Moon is in the last two quarters of Dhanishta, in Shatabhisha, or in the first three of Purva Bhadrapada. A Gemini Moon is in Mrigashira, Ardra or Punarvasu. There are 81 combinations.

The kootas the two signs fix: 7 of 15

KootaOut ofGemini with AquariusWhy
Varna11Same class; the same in either order
Vashya22Same Vashya group
Graha Maitri54Saturn lists Mercury as a friend; Mercury is neutral to Saturn
Bhakoot70Aquarius is 9th from Gemini; Gemini 5th from Aquarius
Sign kootas in all 81 pairings, either order (engine-facts.mjs gemini-and-aquarius-moon-sign-compatibility, run 2026-10-14; reversed order from a scratch run of ashtakoot()).

Graha Maitri (the koota) is the same as for Gemini with Capricorn, since both signs belong to Saturn. In the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 relationships the engine stores, Saturn counts Mercury a friend and Mercury counts Saturn neutral, which scores 4. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 makes Kumbh Saturn's moolatrikona, but Graha Maitri only asks who rules the sign, not in what dignity.

Bhakoot (the koota) is the 7-point loss. Aquarius is the 9th sign from Gemini, and Gemini the 5th from Aquarius. The engine scored 5/9 as 7 until October 2026; it now scores it 0, following two web references ([A], [B] in its header) that agree. No book in this app's library contains the rule, and the header says descriptions elsewhere differ, so other software may show this pair 7 points higher. The zero is often labelled Bhakoot dosha.

Varna (the koota) and Vashya (the koota) are both full. Because the two signs share a Varna class, the engine's order-dependent comparison passes whichever Moon is entered first, so this pair has none of the one-point swing that affects many others. Varna is used here only as the name of a koota.

The kootas the nakshatras decide

  • Nadi is 0 in 53 of the 81 pairings and 8 in 28. Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada are Aadi, like Ardra and Punarvasu, so any of those Gemini quarters meeting any of those Aquarius quarters shares a Nadi; Mrigashira with Dhanishta (both Madhya) adds the rest.
  • Gana is 0 in 30, 3 in 39 and 6 in only 12. Dhanishta and Shatabhisha are both Rakshasa, which puts six of Aquarius's nine quarters against Gemini's Deva stars.
  • Tara is 3 in 69 pairings and 1.5 in 12 - the one nakshatra koota that is generous here.
  • Yoni is 2 throughout: Serpent, Dog and Cat against Lion and Horse, with no shared animal and no enemy pair.

The two big nakshatra kootas work against each other in an unhelpful way for this pair. A Gemini Moon in Ardra cannot lose Gana (Ardra is Manushya in the current table) but shares Aadi nadi with seven of Aquarius's quarters. A Gemini Moon in Mrigashira keeps Nadi against most of Aquarius but, being Deva, loses Gana against six quarters. Only a handful of pairings escape both, and they produce the top of the range.

Ardra's Gana is itself a recent revision. Before October 2026 the engine listed Ardra as Rakshasa, which would have given an Ardra Moon full Gana against Dhanishta and Shatabhisha and 3 against Purva Bhadrapada. The current Manushya listing gives 3, 3 and 6 instead. Readers comparing an older printout should expect the Gana line for Ardra pairings to differ.

The range of totals

Across all 81 pairings the total runs from 12 to 23 out of 36, median 15, and order makes no difference. The sign kootas put down a fixed 7; the nakshatras add between 5 and 16. The median of 15 is low compared with the range's top because shared Nadi, worth 8 points, is the common case rather than the exception.

Set beside Gemini's other air trine the contrast is clear. Gemini with Libra, also a 5/9 pair with Bhakoot 0, has a median of 24, because Libra's stars almost never share Gemini's Nadi. The sign-level rules treat the two trines almost identically; the difference between 15 and 24 is entirely in the stars.

It also helps to read the low median correctly. A median of 15 means that half of the 81 star combinations score 15 or less, under rules that put 7 points out of reach for every one of them. It does not mean a typical Gemini-Aquarius couple is badly matched in any wider sense; it means that this particular tally, as implemented here, is dominated by two kootas that the two signs' star lists tend to fail together.

For any real couple the stars are therefore the whole question. The nakshatra calculator finds each one from birth details, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains why the same Moon has both.

Worked example: Gemini 1 degree with Aquarius 1 degree

A Moon at 1 degree of Gemini sits in Mrigashira; one at 1 degree of Aquarius sits in Dhanishta. This combination produces the pair's minimum:

KootaScoreOut ofWhat decided it
Varna11Sign: same class
Vashya22Sign: same group
Tara33Nakshatra: counts 19 and 10, both favourable
Yoni24Nakshatra: Serpent and Lion
Graha Maitri45Sign: Mercury neutral, Saturn friendly
Gana06Nakshatra: Deva with Rakshasa
Bhakoot07Sign: 9/5
Nadi08Nakshatra: Madhya with Madhya
Total1236
ashtakoot() for Gemini 1 deg with Aquarius 1 deg (engine-facts.mjs, run 2026-10-14). The reverse order also totals 12.

Every loss in the pair's repertoire appears in this one row: Bhakoot from the signs, Gana and Nadi from the stars. Mrigashira and Dhanishta are both Madhya nadi, and Dhanishta is Rakshasa against a Deva Mrigashira. Tara, at full 3, is the only nakshatra koota that helps. A Moon a few degrees on in Shatabhisha would keep Gana at 0 but switch Nadi to 8, because Shatabhisha is Aadi.

What the classical texts say

BPHS gives the engine its sign classes and its friendship lists; here both are favourable. It does not give the Ashtakoot points or the Bhakoot penalty, and nor do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha or Advanced Predictive Astrology. No book in the library discusses a Gemini Moon with an Aquarius Moon, and this page reports no classical opinion where there is none.

What a score does not tell you

A 12 or a 23 is a reading against a convention whose handling of this very distance changed this year. It does not describe two people, and this app does not advise anyone whether to marry. The shared-Nadi result common to this pair is discussed in Nadi dosha; Mars placement is a separate check, explained in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. The love compatibility calculator offers a lighter comparison. Related pairs: Gemini and Libra, Gemini and Capricorn and Gemini and Pisces.

What is the Guna Milan score for a Gemini Moon and an Aquarius Moon?
12 to 23 out of 36 in this app, median 15, in either order of entry.
Why is Bhakoot 0 for two air signs?
Aquarius is the 9th sign from Gemini. The engine has scored 5/9 distances as 0 since October 2026, following two web references; before that it gave 7.
How often do Gemini and Aquarius Moons share a Nadi?
In 53 of the 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings. Ardra and Punarvasu share Aadi nadi with Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada, and Mrigashira shares Madhya with Dhanishta.
Does the order we enter our details matter?
Not for this pair. Both signs are in the same Varna class, so every total is the same either way.
Where can we see our full score?
In the match tool, which reads both nakshatras from your birth details.
