Gemini and Capricorn make an unusual pair in Guna Milan: the two lords get on reasonably well, yet the two signs sit at one of the distances the system penalises most heavily. What the nakshatras then add is fairly kind - Nadi, in particular, almost never fails for this pair. This page lays out the engine's figures so the reasons are visible.

Mithun and Makar in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 links the two signs through temperament in an odd way. Sl. 5-5.5 lists Makar with Vrishabh and Kanya as "windy" and puts Mithun among the "mixed" signs, yet the fuller description of Mithun in Sl. 9-9.5 calls it "windy in temperament" as well. Otherwise they share little: Mithun is airy, biped, village-dwelling and ruled by Budh; Makar (Sl. 19-20) is earthy, Tamasic, lorded by Sani, quadruped in its first half and "footless, moving in water" in its second. Both are said to be strong at night.
Capricorn's nine quarters are the last three of Uttara Ashadha, all four of Shravana and the first two of Dhanishta. Gemini's are Mrigashira (two), Ardra (four) and Punarvasu (three).

Graha Maitri (the koota) comes out better than the sign distance might suggest. In the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 relationships stored in the engine, Saturn lists Mercury as a friend, while Mercury's own friends are only the Sun and Venus, leaving Saturn neutral from its side. Friend-neutral scores 4, a value on which all four of the engine's Graha Maitri references agree.
Bhakoot (the koota) costs the full 7. Counting inclusively, Capricorn is the 8th sign from Gemini and Gemini the 6th from Capricorn. 6/8 is one of the three zero distances in the engine (with 2/12 and 5/9), a rule taken from two web references because no book in this app's library states it. The result is often called Bhakoot dosha.
Vashya (the koota) is 0.5, the engine's value for groups that are neither the same nor adjacent. Varna (the koota) depends on order: the engine passes it when the first Moon's class is at the same point in its list as the second's or later, true for Gemini first and false for Capricorn first. The header calls this unresolved. The term is only the koota's name for a BPHS sign classification.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
- Nadi is 8 in 77 of the 81 pairings. Capricorn's stars are Antya (Uttara Ashadha, Shravana) and Madhya (Dhanishta), and Gemini has no Antya star, so only Mrigashira meeting Dhanishta - Madhya with Madhya - shares a Nadi.
- Gana is 6 in 32, 3 in 39, 0 in 10. Dhanishta is the only Rakshasa star here; the 0 cases are Mrigashira or Punarvasu meeting it.
- Yoni is 2 in 75 pairings and 0 in 6: Mrigashira's Serpent meeting Uttara Ashadha's Mongoose, the classic enemy pair in the engine's table.
- Tara is 3 in 20 and 1.5 in 61.
Mrigashira is the Gemini star that carries all the risk here. It is the only one that can share a Nadi (with Dhanishta), the only one that can meet an enemy Yoni (with Uttara Ashadha), and one of the two that can lose Gana (against Dhanishta). An Ardra Moon, by contrast, cannot lose any of those three against a Capricorn Moon: it is Aadi, its animal is the Dog, and it is Manushya. The total for an Ardra Moon will therefore tend to sit near the top of the range.
That statement about Ardra depends on a recent table change. Until October 2026 the engine counted Ardra as Rakshasa; it now counts it as Manushya, because three references named in the engine header agree. Under the old listing an Ardra Moon would have scored 0 for Gana against Shravana (a Deva star) and full Gana against Dhanishta. Under the current one it scores 3 against both and the full 6 against Uttara Ashadha. Comparisons with older printouts for this pair should allow for that revision, since four of Gemini's nine quarters are Ardra.
The range of totals
Gemini first, the 81 totals run from 10.5 to 24.5 out of 36, median 20. Capricorn first, 9.5 to 23.5, median 19. Because the sign kootas start at 5.5, the nakshatras supply the bulk of every total: between 5 and 19 points depending on the stars. That is a wide band for a pair whose sign kootas never change, and it is why the sign pair alone tells a couple so little about their own figure.
Gemini's 6/8 partner on the other side, Scorpio, scores 6.5 to 22 in the same engine. Capricorn does a little better because Saturn befriends Mercury where Mars does not, and because Capricorn's Antya-heavy stars rarely share a Nadi with Gemini. The comparison is a property of the tables, not of the people born under either sign.

Worked example: Gemini 1 degree with Capricorn 1 degree
A Moon at 1 degree of Gemini is in Mrigashira; a Moon at 1 degree of Capricorn is in Uttara Ashadha. Gemini entered first:

At 18, the example sits two points under the median, and the reason is Yoni: this happens to be one of the six pairings where the Serpent meets the Mongoose. Shift the Capricorn Moon a few degrees into Shravana and the Yoni loss disappears (Shravana's animal is the Monkey) while Gana improves to full, since Shravana is Deva like Mrigashira.
What the classical texts say
The engine takes two inputs from BPHS - Ch. 4's sign classes and Ch. 3 Sl. 55's friendships - and for this pair the friendship works in the couple's favour. The point system and the Bhakoot penalty are not in BPHS, nor in Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha or Advanced Predictive Astrology. None of these books mentions Gemini and Capricorn Moons as a match, so there is no classical verdict to report.
The same chapter of BPHS does give Saturn a central place in Makar - it is one of his two signs, with Kumbh holding his moolatrikona (Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54) - but Graha Maitri does not weigh dignity. It asks only which graha rules each Moon sign and how the two regard each other, so every Capricorn Moon is treated identically on that koota.
What a score does not tell you
