In short

Two Leo Moons score from 28 to 34 out of 36 in this app, median 29.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, in either order. All four sign kootas are full (15 of 15), Leo's two main stars share the Rat as their Yoni animal, and Leo has no Deva star so Gana never drops to 0; a shared Nadi in 33 pairings sets the floor.

Two Leo Moons give a higher median than any other pairing of Gemini, Cancer or Leo Moons in this app's Ashtakoot engine. Same sign means the four sign kootas are full, as for every same-sign pair; what lifts Leo further is the make-up of its three birth stars, which share an animal and avoid the one Gana combination that scores 0. The details follow.

The sign itself is covered on the Leo (Simha) rashi page. The nakshatra matching hub explains the eight kootas and links all 78 pair pages, and the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.

Simh in BPHS

BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 12 calls Simh Sattvic, four-footed, "a royal Rasi", a forest-dweller with a large white body, rising with its head, residing in the east and strong during the day; it is ruled by Surya, the Sun. Sl. 5-5.5 makes it a fixed sign and bilious. Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 adds that the first 20 degrees of Simh are the Sun's moolatrikona and the remainder his own sign. None of these dignity distinctions enter Ashtakoot: Graha Maitri asks only which graha rules the Moon sign.

Leo holds nine nakshatra quarters (padas): the four of Magha, the four of Purva Phalguni and the first of Uttara Phalguni. Two Leo Moons can meet in 81 ways.

The kootas this sign pair fixes: 15 of 15

Graha Maitri (the koota) scores 5 whenever both Moon signs share a lord; the Sun rules both here. Bhakoot (the koota) counts the distance between Moon signs; for the same sign it is 1, which keeps all 7 points. Varna (the koota), the engine's one order-dependent koota, cannot differ between two Moons in the same class. The word is only the koota's technical name; the "royal" description in BPHS is a classification of the sign, not of anyone born with the Moon there.

The kootas the nakshatras decide

Leo's three stars, as the engine tabulates them: Magha is Rakshasa, Antya nadi, Rat. Purva Phalguni is Manushya, Madhya nadi, Rat. Uttara Phalguni is Manushya, Aadi nadi, Cow. From that:

  • Yoni is 4 in 65 of the 81 pairings and 2 in 16. Magha and Purva Phalguni share the Rat, so any pairing between them, as well as two Moons in the same star, scores full. Only the single Uttara Phalguni quarter, a Cow, drops to 2 against the others.
  • Gana is 6 in 41 and 3 in 40, never 0. Leo has no Deva star, so the Deva-Rakshasa clash cannot occur.
  • Nadi is 0 in 33 and 8 in 48. Each star has its own Nadi, so a shared Nadi means a shared star.
  • Tara is 3 in 73 and 1.5 in 8.

The interplay is worth spelling out. Two Moons in the same star get full Yoni and full Gana but lose Nadi. A Magha Moon with a Purva Phalguni Moon keeps Nadi (Antya against Madhya) and Yoni (both Rat), but Gana drops to 3 because one star is Rakshasa and the other Manushya. Two Purva Phalguni or Uttara Phalguni Moons in different stars - Purva with Uttara - keep Gana at 6, being both Manushya, and keep Nadi, being Madhya and Aadi, but lose 2 on Yoni. Every route ends at 28, 29.5, 33 or 34.

The 34 at the top needs everything that can be held at once: different Nadi, full Gana, full Tara, and the 2-point Yoni that the Purva-Uttara Phalguni meeting brings. Because Uttara Phalguni contributes only one quarter to Leo, that combination is uncommon, and most pairings sit lower.

Uttara Phalguni deserves a note of its own. It is the only Leo star whose animal is not the Rat, the only Aadi-nadi star in the sign, and it occupies just the last 3 degrees 20 minutes of Leo before the star continues into Virgo. A Leo Moon there behaves differently from the other eight quarters: it loses Yoni points against Magha and Purva Phalguni, but it can never share a Nadi with them. Leo Moons near the very end of the sign are therefore where the top totals live, and also where a small error in birth time is most likely to change the star - or the sign.

Magha, at the other end of the sign, has the opposite profile. It is the only Rakshasa star in Leo, so two Magha Moons score full Gana while a Magha Moon against either Phalguni drops to 3. It is Antya, a Nadi no other Leo star shares, so it never loses Nadi except to another Magha Moon. Most of the pair's variety comes from how these two very differently built stars meet.

The range of totals for two Leo Moons

Across the 81 pairings the total runs from 28 to 34 out of 36, median 29.5, the same whichever Moon is entered first. Among same-sign pairs in this engine, Cancer with Cancer also runs 28 to 34 but with a median of 28, and Gemini with Gemini runs 23 to 32.5. Leo's higher median comes from the shared Rat animal of its two main stars and the absence of a Deva star.

It is easy to over-read a range this high. A median of 29.5 says that two Leo Moons meet the Ashtakoot rules comfortably whichever stars they fall in; it says nothing about the two people. The floor of 28 is simply what remains after the one koota that a shared star must lose. Leo's fire trines show the contrast: Leo with Sagittarius scores 13.5 to 26 in the same engine, because the 5/9 distance removes Bhakoot entirely, even though the Sun and Jupiter are mutual friends in the engine's tables.

Each person's star still needs a birth time to find. The nakshatra calculator does that, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains how sign and star relate.

Worked example: Leo 1 degree with Leo 1 degree

Put both Moons at 1 degree of Leo. Each is in the first quarter of Magha, so the two people share a birth star:

Seven kootas full; Nadi at 0 because a shared star always shares a Nadi. Note that Gana is full here with both Moons in a Rakshasa star: the engine scores same-gana 6 whichever gana it is, and the label Rakshasa is a technical classification of the star, not a description of a person. Many matching traditions treat a shared birth star separately; Nadi dosha sets out what the term covers.

What the texts say, and where they are silent

BPHS Ch. 4 provides the class the engine gives Leo, and Ch. 3 Sl. 55 the friendship table that same-sign pairs never need. The scoring system itself is absent from every book in the library - BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha, Advanced Predictive Astrology - and the engine's header names the web references used instead. No book here says anything about two Leo Moons as a match.

What a score does not tell you

A 28 or a 34 is the output of one tradition's rules applied to two Moon positions. It is not a verdict on two people, and this app gives none on marriage. Mars placement is a separate check, explained in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. The love compatibility calculator offers a lighter comparison. What Guna Milan score do two Leo Moons get?
28 to 34 out of 36 in this app across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, with a median of 29.5.
Why is Yoni so often full for two Leo Moons?
Magha and Purva Phalguni, which hold eight of Leo's nine quarters, share the Rat as their Yoni animal. Yoni is 4 in 65 of the 81 pairings.
Can Gana be 0 for this pair?
No. Leo has Rakshasa and Manushya stars but no Deva star, so the Deva-Rakshasa combination that scores 0 cannot occur.
Does it matter who is entered first?
No. Both Moons are in the same Varna class, so every total is identical in either order.
How do we get our actual score?
Enter both births in the match tool, which reads both nakshatras.
