In short
A Leo Moon and a Virgo Moon score 11 to 23.5 out of 36 in this app, median 19, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings with Leo entered first; Virgo first adds 1. The signs are neighbours, a 2/12 distance that sets Bhakoot to 0, and Mercury counts the Sun a friend (Graha Maitri 4), so the sign kootas give 4.5 of 15.
Leo and Virgo are adjacent signs that share a birth star across their boundary: Uttara Phalguni begins in the last degrees of Leo and continues into Virgo. In Ashtakoot matching adjacency costs the largest sign koota outright, so the sign total is low. The nakshatras, and that shared star in particular, shape the rest. The engine's figures follow.
For the signs: Leo, Simha rashi and Virgo, Kanya rashi. For the system: the nakshatra matching hub. For a real couple: the Kundli matching calculator.
Simh and Kanya in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 makes both signs strong by day and has both rise with the head. Simh (Sl. 12) is the Sun's Sattvic, four-footed "royal Rasi" that resorts to forests and resides in the east. Kanya (Sl. 13-14) is a biped hill-resorter in the south, a Virgin with "grains and fire in its hands", Tamasic, said to belong to the business community, and ruled by Budh. Sl. 5-5.5 makes Simh fixed and bilious, Kanya dual and windy. Both signs are among those the chapter assigns a Varna, and the engine's class table follows it.
A Leo Moon is in Magha, Purva Phalguni or the first quarter of Uttara Phalguni. A Virgo Moon is in the other three quarters of Uttara Phalguni, in Hasta, or in the first half of Chitra.
The kootas this sign pair fixes: 4.5 of 15
| Koota | Out of | Leo first | Virgo first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 0 | 1 | Different classes; the engine compares A with B |
| Vashya | 2 | 0.5 | 0.5 | Groups more than one step apart |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 4 | 4 | Mercury lists the Sun as a friend; the Sun is neutral to Mercury |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 0 | 0 | Virgo is 2nd from Leo; Leo 12th from Virgo |
| Sign total | 15 | 4.5 | 5.5 |
Bhakoot (the koota) goes to 0. Counting inclusively, Virgo is the 2nd sign from Leo and Leo the 12th from Virgo. Every adjacent pair is a 2/12 pair, and the engine zeroes 2/12 along with 5/9 and 6/8, following two web references named in its header; no book in the app's library states the rule. The result is what people call Bhakoot dosha.
Graha Maitri (the koota) gives 4. In the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 relationships stored in the engine, Mercury counts the Sun a friend, but the Sun's friends are the Moon, Mars and Jupiter, so Mercury is neutral from the Sun's side. Friend-neutral is 4, a value all four of the engine's references share. It is the same figure Gemini and Leo receive, since Gemini too is Mercury's.
Varna (the koota) is order-dependent: the engine gives 1 when the first Moon's class sits at the same place as the second's or later in its list. Leo's class comes before Virgo's, so Leo entered first scores 0 and Virgo entered first scores 1. The header records this as an open point. Vashya (the koota) gives 0.5 for groups that are neither the same nor adjacent. Varna is a technical label for a sign class, not a statement about people.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
- Gana is 6 in 23 pairings, 3 in 42, 0 in 16. Magha is Leo's Rakshasa star and Hasta is Virgo's Deva star; Magha meeting Hasta gives the 16 zeros.
- Nadi is 8 in 66 and 0 in 15: Purva Phalguni with Chitra (both Madhya), and Leo's quarter of Uttara Phalguni with Virgo's Uttara Phalguni or Hasta (all Aadi).
- Yoni takes all three values: 4 in 3 pairings, 0 in 2, 2 in the other 76. The 4s are the shared star, Uttara Phalguni with itself (Cow with Cow). The 0s are the same Leo quarter meeting Chitra, whose Tiger the engine lists as the Cow's enemy.
- Tara is 3 in 19 and 1.5 in 62.
The single Leo quarter of Uttara Phalguni is the most volatile position in this pair. Against Virgo's own Uttara Phalguni it shares the star: full Yoni and full Gana, but a shared Nadi. Against Hasta it shares the Aadi nadi too. Against Chitra it keeps Nadi but meets an enemy Yoni. A Leo Moon in the last three degrees or so of the sign therefore swings more than one in Magha or Purva Phalguni, whose results against Virgo are steadier.
Magha and Purva Phalguni, which together hold eight of Leo's nine quarters, both carry the Rat, an animal with no enemy in Virgo, so their Yoni is a steady 2. Their variation comes from Gana and Nadi: Magha risks Gana 0 against Hasta, Purva Phalguni risks a shared Nadi against Chitra, and neither risks both at once.
A scratch run of every star combination shows where the extremes sit. The minimum of 11 is Purva Phalguni against Chitra (8 pairings): a shared Madhya nadi, Gana 3, Tara 1.5. The maximum of 23.5 is Purva Phalguni against Uttara Phalguni (12 pairings): full Gana, a different Nadi and full Tara. So the same Leo star produces both ends of the range, depending only on which Virgo star it meets - a clear case of the nakshatra half outweighing the sign half.
The range of totals
Leo first, the 81 totals run from 11 to 23.5 out of 36, median 19. Virgo first, 12 to 24.5, median 20. The signs contribute 4.5 or 5.5, so the nakshatras provide most of the total; their best case adds up to 19, their worst 6.5.
The comparison with Leo's other neighbour is close. Cancer and Leo, also 2/12, scores 12 to 20 with Cancer first; Leo and Virgo reaches a little higher because its stars bring fewer Yoni clashes. Leo with Libra, one step further at 3/11, keeps Bhakoot and runs 11 to 25 despite a Graha Maitri of 0. Those are differences in the scoring tables, not in people.
Placing a real couple needs both birth stars. The nakshatra calculator finds them; Moon sign and nakshatra explains how a Moon near a sign boundary can share a star with the next sign.
Worked example: Leo 1 degree with Virgo 1 degree
A Moon at 1 degree of Leo is in Magha; a Moon at 1 degree of Virgo is in the second quarter of Uttara Phalguni. Leo entered first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 0 | 1 | Sign: Leo entered first |
| Vashya | 0.5 | 2 | Sign: groups not adjacent |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: count 3 unfavourable, 26 favourable |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Rat and Cow |
| Graha Maitri | 4 | 5 | Sign: Sun neutral, Mercury friendly |
| Gana | 3 | 6 | Nakshatra: Rakshasa with Manushya |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 2/12 |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Antya with Aadi |
| Total | 19 | 36 |
The total lands on the median. Nadi provides 8 of the 19; Graha Maitri 4; Gana, Yoni and Tara small amounts. Varna and Bhakoot are both 0. Had the Virgo Moon been a few degrees further on, in Hasta, Gana would have fallen to 0 (Rakshasa against Deva) while Nadi stayed at 8 - one of the 16 lowest-Gana pairings.
What the classical texts say
BPHS supplies the sign classes (Ch. 4) and the friendship lists (Ch. 3 Sl. 55) on which Varna and Graha Maitri are built. The Ashtakoot points themselves, and the 2/12 rule, are in no book in this app's library - not BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha or Advanced Predictive Astrology. None of them comments on a Leo Moon matched with a Virgo Moon.
What a score does not tell you
A total in the high teens is a measurement against one tradition's rules. It does not describe two people, and this app gives no verdict on marriage. Mars placement is a separate check - see Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. Nadi dosha explains the shared-Nadi result. The love compatibility calculator gives a lighter comparison. Related pairs: Leo and Leo, Leo and Libra and Cancer and Virgo.
- What is the Guna Milan score for a Leo Moon and a Virgo Moon?
- 11 to 23.5 out of 36 in this app with Leo entered first (median 19); 12 to 24.5 with Virgo first.
- Why is Bhakoot 0?
- Virgo is the 2nd sign from Leo. The engine scores every 2/12 pair, and 5/9 and 6/8 pairs, as 0.
- Can a Leo Moon and a Virgo Moon have the same birth star?
- Yes. Uttara Phalguni's first quarter is in Leo and its other three in Virgo, so both Moons can be in it. In those 3 pairings Yoni and Gana are full but Nadi is 0.
- Why does entering Virgo first add a point?
- Varna compares the first Moon with the second. Virgo first passes; Leo first does not.
- How do we find our real score?
- Enter both births in the match tool, which reads both nakshatras.
