Leo and Libra sit three signs apart, a distance Ashtakoot matching treats kindly. Their lords are another matter: the Sun and Venus are each other's enemies in the classical friendship table, the one combination that scores 0 for Graha Maitri. The pair is therefore a study in one sign koota full and another empty, with the birth stars deciding the rest. The numbers below are the engine's.

Simh and Tula in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 makes both signs strong by day and has both rise with the head. Simh (Sl. 12) is Sattvic, four-footed, "a royal Rasi", forest-dwelling, residing in the east, ruled by Surya. Tula (Sl. 15-16.5) is biped, black in complexion, predominant in Rajo-Gun, tied to the west and resorting to land, lorded by Sukr. Sl. 5-5.5 makes Simh fixed and bilious, Tula movable and "mixed". One further classical link: Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 places the Sun's debilitation in the 7th sign from Mesh, which is Tula. Ashtakoot does not read dignity, so this plays no part below.
A Leo Moon is in Magha, Purva Phalguni or the first quarter of Uttara Phalguni. A Libra Moon is in the second half of Chitra, in Swati, or in the first three quarters of Vishakha.

Graha Maitri (the koota) is the one that stands out. In the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 relationships stored in the engine, the Sun lists Venus among its enemies (with Saturn), and Venus lists the Sun among its own (with the Moon). Mutual enmity scores 0. This is one of the cells the October 2026 revision changed: the engine used to give 1, and now gives 0 because all four of its references agree.
Bhakoot (the koota) keeps its 7. Libra is the 3rd sign from Leo and Leo the 11th from Libra, and 3/11 is not among the engine's zero distances (2/12, 5/9, 6/8), which it takes from two web references since the classical books here do not contain the rule.
Varna (the koota) depends on order. The engine passes it when the first Moon's class is at the same place in its list as the second's or later. Leo's class comes earlier than Libra's, so Leo first scores 0 and Libra first 1. The header lists the asymmetry as unresolved. Vashya (the koota) gives 0.5. Varna names a classification of signs, nothing more.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
- Nadi is 0 in 36 pairings and 8 in 45. Magha is Antya, like Swati and Vishakha; Purva Phalguni is Madhya, like Chitra. Leo's Uttara Phalguni quarter, being Aadi, never shares a Nadi with Libra.
- Gana is 6 in 20, 3 in 45, 0 in 16. Magha, Rakshasa, scores full against Chitra and Vishakha (also Rakshasa) and 0 against Deva Swati.
- Yoni is 0 in 5 pairings and 2 in 76. Uttara Phalguni's Cow meets the Tiger of Chitra and Vishakha, a pair the engine lists as enemies.
- Tara is 1.5 in every pairing.
Magha is the Leo star that sets both ends of the range. Against Chitra it gets full Gana and a different Nadi, the pair's best result. Against Swati it gets neither: Rakshasa meets Deva, and both are Antya. Against Vishakha it keeps Gana but shares Nadi. Purva Phalguni is steadier, scoring 22 against both Swati and Vishakha and dropping only against Chitra, where the Madhya nadi is shared.
Swati is the star that matters most on the Libra side because it holds four quarters. Against Magha it produces the minimum; against Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni it produces solid mid-range totals. A Libra Moon in Swati is therefore good or poor for this pair almost entirely according to whether the Leo Moon is in Magha.
The single Leo quarter of Uttara Phalguni has a profile of its own. It is the only Aadi-nadi star involved, so it never loses Nadi against Libra, and it is Manushya, so Gana is a steady 3. Its weakness is Yoni: the Cow is the Tiger's enemy in the engine's table, which costs 2 points against Chitra and Vishakha. Its totals therefore cluster at 20 to 22, neither the best nor the worst the pair can produce.
Anyone comparing an older printout should note the October 2026 change. Before it, the engine gave mutual enemies 1 point for Graha Maitri rather than 0, so every Leo-Libra total was one point higher than it is now.
The range of totals
Leo first, the 81 totals run from 11 to 25 out of 36, median 20. Libra first, 12 to 26, median 21. A scratch run of every star combination shows the minimum is Magha against Swati (16 pairings) and the maximum Magha against Chitra (8 pairings); everything else sits between 14 and 22.
For context in the same engine: Leo with Aquarius, another pair where the lords are mutual enemies (the Sun and Saturn), runs 14 to 25 with a full Bhakoot; Leo with Capricorn, Saturn's other sign but at 6/8, runs only 4 to 19.5. Graha Maitri at 0 costs this pair 5 points, but it is not the main source of its spread; the stars are. None of this describes people born under these signs.

Worked example: Leo 1 degree with Libra 1 degree
A Moon at 1 degree of Leo is in Magha; a Moon at 1 degree of Libra is in the third quarter of Chitra. Leo entered first:

This example happens to be the pair's maximum. Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi are all full and account for 21 of the 25 points; Graha Maitri contributes nothing. It also shows that two Rakshasa stars score full Gana in this engine - the gana labels are technical classifications of stars, not judgements on people. A Libra Moon a few degrees on, in Swati, would turn this into the pair's minimum.
What the classical texts say
BPHS supplies the sign classes (Ch. 4) and the friendships and enmities (Ch. 3 Sl. 55) behind Varna and Graha Maitri; the Sun-Venus enmity comes from there. The Ashtakoot points are not in BPHS or in the other books of the library - Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha, Advanced Predictive Astrology - and none of these comments on a Leo Moon with a Libra Moon.
What a score does not tell you
A Graha Maitri of 0 is a table lookup between two grahas, not a finding about two people, and a total of 11 or 25 is the arithmetic of one tradition.
