In short
A Leo Moon and a Scorpio Moon score 20 to 32.5 out of 36 in this app, median 26, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings with Leo entered first; Scorpio first lowers each by 1. The Sun and Mars are mutual friends (Graha Maitri 5) and the 4/10 distance keeps Bhakoot at 7, so the sign kootas give 13.5 of 15.
Leo and Scorpio are both fixed signs, square to one another, ruled by the Sun and Mars. Those two lords are friends in the classical tables, and the square is not a distance Ashtakoot matching penalises. The result is one of the strongest sign-level scores among Leo's pairs, and a floor that never drops below 20. The engine's detail follows.
Sign pages: Leo, Simha rashi and Scorpio, Vrishchika rashi. The nakshatra matching hub explains the eight kootas; the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Simh and Vrischik in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 5-5.5 makes both signs fixed, and the chapter describes both as strong in daytime. Simh (Sl. 12) is the Sun's Sattvic, four-footed "royal Rasi", resorting to forests and residing in the east. Vrischik (the passage after Sl. 16.5) is slender, many-footed and hairy, living in holes and facing north, resorting to water and land, "very sharp (or passionate)", and ruled by Mangal. Each receives a Varna in the text - Simh royal, Vrischik "denotes Brahmins" - and the engine's class table follows it.
A Leo Moon is in Magha, Purva Phalguni or the first quarter of Uttara Phalguni. A Scorpio Moon is in the last quarter of Vishakha, in Anuradha or in Jyeshtha.
The kootas this sign pair fixes: 13.5 of 15
| Koota | Out of | Leo first | Scorpio first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | 0 | Different classes; the engine compares A with B |
| Vashya | 2 | 0.5 | 0.5 | Groups more than one step apart |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | 5 | The Sun and Mars list each other as friends |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | 7 | Scorpio is 4th from Leo; Leo 10th from Scorpio |
| Sign total | 15 | 13.5 | 12.5 |
Graha Maitri (the koota) is full. In the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 relationships stored in the engine, the Sun names Mars a friend and Mars names the Sun a friend. Mutual friendship scores 5. The same relationship gives Aries and Leo their full Graha Maitri.
Bhakoot (the koota) is also full: Scorpio is the 4th sign from Leo and Leo the 10th from Scorpio. The engine zeroes only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, a rule from two web references since the library's classical books do not set it out.
Varna (the koota) depends on order. The engine gives 1 when the first Moon's class sits at the same place in its list as the second's or later; Leo's class comes after Scorpio's, so Leo first scores 1 and Scorpio first 0. The header records this as unresolved. Vashya (the koota) gives 0.5. Varna is a classification of signs in a text; it says nothing about people.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
- Nadi is 8 in 57 pairings and 0 in 24. Magha shares the Antya nadi with Vishakha, Purva Phalguni the Madhya with Anuradha, and Uttara Phalguni the Aadi with Jyeshtha.
- Gana is 6 in 20, 3 in 45, 0 in 16. Magha is Rakshasa, like Vishakha and Jyeshtha, so it scores full against them and 0 against Deva Anuradha. The Phalgunis are Manushya and score 3 against everything.
- Tara is 3 in 16 pairings - all of them Magha with Jyeshtha - and 1.5 in 65.
- Yoni is 0 in a single pairing and 2 in 80: Uttara Phalguni's Cow meeting Vishakha's Tiger, an enemy pair in the engine's table.
One star combination dominates the top of the range. Magha against Jyeshtha (16 pairings) collects full Tara, full Gana and a different Nadi, and with the sign points that makes 32.5, the maximum. Magha against Anuradha drops to 25 because Gana falls to 0. At the bottom, Purva Phalguni against Anuradha (16 pairings) and Uttara Phalguni against Jyeshtha (4 pairings) share a Nadi and have only 3 for Gana, giving the minimum of 20.
Seen from the Scorpio side, Jyeshtha is the star with the widest swing: it produces the pair's best result with Magha and its worst with Uttara Phalguni. Anuradha is generally weaker here, since it is Deva (clashing with Magha) and Madhya (sharing Purva Phalguni's nadi). The single Vishakha quarter tends to land in the middle.
Tara behaves unusually here. It reaches its full 3 only in the 16 Magha-Jyeshtha pairings and sits at 1.5 everywhere else. The koota counts from one birth star to the other and back, and treats counts that leave 3, 5 or 7 after division by 9 as unfavourable; for almost every combination of these two signs' stars one of the two directions lands on such a count. It is a small koota, worth at most 3 points, but because it lines up with full Gana and full Nadi in exactly one combination, it is what separates the maximum from the next-best results.
Vashya is the one sign koota that holds the pair back, at 0.5 of 2. The engine's Vashya table puts Leo and Scorpio in groups that are neither the same nor adjacent. It is a small loss, and like every sign koota it is identical in all 81 pairings, so it shifts the whole range without changing its shape.
The range of totals
Leo first, the 81 totals run from 20 to 32.5 out of 36, median 26. Scorpio first, 19 to 31.5, median 25. With 13.5 sign points in hand, the floor is high, and even the weakest star combination lands at 20.
Of the Leo pairs from Cancer through Pisces in this engine, only Leo with Leo (28 to 34) sits higher. Leo with Sagittarius, whose lords are also mutual friends, runs 13.5 to 26 because the 5/9 distance zeroes Bhakoot; Leo with Pisces, the same friendship with Jupiter, runs 11.5 to 26 for the 6/8 reason. The difference between those pages and this one is almost entirely the distance rule. None of this describes people.
To place a particular couple, find both birth stars with the nakshatra calculator. Moon sign and nakshatra explains why a birth time is needed.
Worked example: Leo 1 degree with Scorpio 1 degree
A Moon at 1 degree of Leo is in Magha; a Moon at 1 degree of Scorpio is in the last quarter of Vishakha. Leo entered first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: Leo entered first |
| Vashya | 0.5 | 2 | Sign: groups not adjacent |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: count 7 unfavourable, 22 favourable |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Rat and Tiger |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | Sign: Sun and Mars, mutual friends |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: Rakshasa with Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | Sign: 4/10 |
| Nadi | 0 | 8 | Nakshatra: Antya with Antya |
| Total | 23 | 36 |
The example sits three points below the median because Magha and Vishakha share the Antya nadi. Everything else is strong: Graha Maitri, Bhakoot and Gana are full. A Scorpio Moon a few degrees later, in Anuradha, would recover Nadi but lose Gana (Rakshasa against Deva), giving 25; one further on, in Jyeshtha, would keep both and add a full Tara, giving the 32.5 maximum. The gana labels here are technical classifications of stars, not judgements on anyone.
What the classical texts say
BPHS provides the sign classes (Ch. 4) and the friendship of the Sun and Mars (Ch. 3 Sl. 55) that the engine uses for Varna and Graha Maitri. The Ashtakoot points are not in BPHS or in the other books in this app's library - Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha, Advanced Predictive Astrology - and none of them discusses a Leo Moon matched with a Scorpio Moon.
What a score does not tell you
A high total is a description of how two Moon positions meet a rule set, not a recommendation; this app gives no verdict on marriage. Mars placement is assessed separately - see Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. Nadi dosha covers the shared-Nadi result in the worked example. The love compatibility calculator gives a lighter comparison. Related pairs: Leo and Libra, Leo and Sagittarius and Cancer and Scorpio.
- What is the Guna Milan score for a Leo Moon and a Scorpio Moon?
- 20 to 32.5 out of 36 in this app with Leo entered first (median 26); 19 to 31.5 with Scorpio first.
- Why are the sign kootas so high?
- The Sun and Mars are mutual friends, giving Graha Maitri 5, and the 4/10 distance keeps the full 7 for Bhakoot. Only Vashya and, depending on order, Varna lose anything.
- Which star combination scores highest?
- A Leo Moon in Magha with a Scorpio Moon in Jyeshtha: full Tara, full Gana and different Nadis, for 32.5 with Leo entered first.
- Why does the total drop by one when Scorpio is entered first?
- Varna compares the first Moon with the second. Leo first passes; Scorpio first does not.
- How do we find our own score?
- Enter both births in the match tool, which reads both nakshatras.
