The two fire signs share Varna, sit in adjacent Vashya groups, and have mutually friendly lords (Graha Maitri 5), but Sagittarius is the 5th sign from Leo, so Bhakoot is 0 and the sign kootas give 8 of 15.
Leo and Sagittarius are both fire signs and, in BPHS, both "royal". Their lords, the Sun and Jupiter, are mutual friends. By older practice in this app the pair would have scored very well. Since October 2026 the engine counts the 5/9 distance between them as a zero for Bhakoot, the heaviest sign koota in Guna Milan, and that one rule changes the picture. Here are the engine's numbers.

Simh and Dhanu in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 gives the two signs a good deal in common. Both are Sattvic, both reside in the east, both rise with the head, and both are called royal: Simh "a royal Rasi" (Sl. 12), Dhanu "A royal Rasi" (Sl. 17-18.5). Sl. 5-5.5 groups them with Mesh as bilious. The differences are smaller: Simh is four-footed and strong by day, ruled by Surya; Dhanu is biped then quadruped, strong at night, tawny, "splendourous" and lorded by Guru. Their shared royal description is why the engine puts both in the same Varna class.
A Leo Moon is in Magha, Purva Phalguni or the first quarter of Uttara Phalguni. A Sagittarius Moon is in Mula, Purva Ashadha or the first quarter of Uttara Ashadha. The two signs' stars sit in parallel: each opens with a four-quarter star, continues with a "Purva", and ends with one quarter of an "Uttara".

Graha Maitri (the koota) is full: in the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 relationships stored in the engine, the Sun and Jupiter each list the other as a friend. Varna (the koota) is full in either order, since both signs share a class; this pair is spared the one-point order effect that many others show. Varna is used here only as a koota name.
Bhakoot and the 5/9 change
Bhakoot (the koota) costs 7 points in every pairing. Counted inclusively, Sagittarius is the 5th sign from Leo and Leo the 9th from Sagittarius. The engine scored 5/9 as 7 until October 2026. It now scores 0, following two web references ([A], [B] in its header) that agree. The header and docs/numerology-rules.md say plainly that no book in this app's library contains the rule and that other descriptions handle the trine differently. Software using the older reading would show every Leo-Sagittarius total here 7 points higher. The zero is usually called Bhakoot dosha.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
- Gana is 6 in 41 pairings and 3 in 40, never 0. Neither sign has a Deva star: Magha and Mula are Rakshasa; the Phalgunis and Ashadhas are Manushya.
- Nadi is 8 in 57 and 0 in 24. The parallel structure pairs the nadis neatly: Magha with Uttara Ashadha (Antya), Purva Phalguni with Purva Ashadha (Madhya), Uttara Phalguni with Mula (Aadi).
- Tara is 3 in 73 of 81 pairings and 1.5 in 8.
- Yoni is 2 in all 81: Rat and Cow against Dog, Monkey and Mongoose, with no shared animal and no enemy pair.
A scratch run of every star combination shows how this plays out. Magha with Mula (16 pairings) is the best case: both Rakshasa, so Gana is 6; Antya against Aadi, so Nadi is 8; full Tara. That gives 26, the maximum, which a handful of Uttara-star combinations also reach. Purva Phalguni with Purva Ashadha (16 pairings) keeps full Gana but shares the Madhya nadi, falling to 18. The minimum, 13.5, comes from the two small cross-combinations where the single "Uttara" quarters share a Nadi with the opposite sign's first star: Magha with Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Phalguni with Mula, four pairings each.
Since Gana never falls below 3 and Yoni never moves, this pair's spread is almost entirely a matter of Nadi: 8 points that are either there or not. With most pairings keeping Nadi, the median sits only 3 points below the maximum.
The parallel layout of the two signs makes the Nadi pattern easy to remember. Each sign's first star shares a Nadi with the other sign's last quarter, and the two middle stars share one with each other. A Moon at the very start of one sign and a Moon at the very end of the other is therefore the combination to watch, along with two Moons both in the middle of their signs. Everything else keeps the full 8 points.
The October 2026 change matters more for this pair than for most, because nothing else in the sign kootas is weak. Before the change, the four sign kootas gave 15 of 15 minus a point for Vashya; after it, they give 8. A family comparing a printout from early 2026 with the app today would see the whole range shift down by exactly 7, with no other koota different. That is the rule, not a change in the charts.
The range of totals
Across all 81 pairings the total runs from 13.5 to 26 out of 36, median 23, identical in either order. The sign kootas supply 8; the nakshatras supply between 5.5 and 18.
The other fire trine with Leo shows the same pattern. Aries with Leo, also a 5/9 pair with mutually friendly lords, runs 13.5 to 26 in this engine with a median of 23 - the same figures as here, reached through different stars. Leo with Scorpio, whose lords are also friends but which sits at a safe 4/10, runs 20 to 32.5. The 7-point Bhakoot rule accounts for most of the difference. None of this describes Leo or Sagittarius people.

Worked example: Leo 1 degree with Sagittarius 1 degree

Every koota except Bhakoot and the half-lost Vashya and Yoni is at its maximum. The 26 is as high as this sign pair goes in the current engine; under the pre-2026 Bhakoot rule the same two Moons would have scored 7 more. The two Rakshasa labels are technical classifications of the stars, which the engine scores as a match; they say nothing about the people.
What the classical texts say
BPHS supplies the shared royal class (Ch. 4) and the Sun-Jupiter friendship (Ch. 3 Sl. 55) that make three of the four sign kootas favourable. The Bhakoot rule that removes the fourth is not in BPHS, nor in Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha or Advanced Predictive Astrology. No book in the library comments on a Leo Moon matched with a Sagittarius Moon.
What a score does not tell you
A 13.5 or a 26 is how two Moons meet a convention whose treatment of this very distance changed this year. It does not describe two people, and this app does not say whether anyone should marry.
