In short
An Aries Moon with a Gemini Moon scores between 15.5 and 26.5 out of 36 across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app, median 20.5, with Aries entered first; entering Gemini first adds one Varna point throughout. Bhakoot is a full 7 at the 3/11 distance, but Graha Maitri is only 1 because Mars counts Mercury as an enemy.
Aries and Gemini are two signs apart, with Taurus between them, and that small gap is enough to rescue the koota Aries loses to its immediate neighbour. In Ashtakoot matching this pair keeps the full Bhakoot, then gives most of it back through a weak planetary friendship and a Varna point that depends on who is entered first. The total, as always, is finished by the two nakshatras.
The sign pages are Aries, Mesha rashi and Gemini, Mithuna rashi. All eight kootas are explained on the nakshatra matching hub, and the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Fire meets air: Mesh and Mithun in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 gives the two signs very different pictures. Mesh (Sl. 6-7) is a fiery, movable quadruped of hills, associated with courage and ruled by Mangal. Mithun (Sl. 9-9.5) "represents a male and a female, holding a mace and lute"; it is an airy, dual, biped sign of villages, windy in temperament, ruled by Budh (Mercury). Sl. 5-5.5 puts Mesh among the bilious signs and Mithun among the mixed. One detail matters for the engine: BPHS names a social class for nine of the twelve signs, and Mithun is not one of them. The engine's header says Mithun simply takes the value of its element, air.
The Aries Moon's nine quarters are Ashwini, Bharani and Krittika pada 1. The Gemini Moon's are Mrigashira padas 3-4, all four padas of Ardra and Punarvasu padas 1-3.
Sign kootas and the score they fix
| Koota | Out of | Reads | Aries first, Gemini second | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Sign | 0 (1 if Gemini is first) | Kshatriya and Shudra values compared in entry order |
| Vashya | 2 | Sign | 1 | Adjacent Vashya groups |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Sign | 1 | Mars counts Mercury an enemy; Mercury is neutral to Mars |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Sign | 7 | Distance 3 and 11 is not a penalised pair |
| Tara | 3 | Nakshatra | 1.5 | The same in all 81 pairings |
| Yoni | 4 | Nakshatra | 2 | The same in all 81 pairings |
| Gana | 6 | Nakshatra | 0, 3 or 6 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Nadi | 8 | Nakshatra | 0 or 8 | Depends on the two birth stars |
The signs fix 9 of 15 points with Aries first and 10 with Gemini first. Over the 81 pairings the total runs 15.5 to 26.5 (median 20.5) in the first order and 16.5 to 27.5 (median 21.5) in the second. Most of the sign points come from one koota, Bhakoot.
Bhakoot: a 3/11 pair keeps all seven
Gemini is the 3rd sign counted from Aries; Aries is the 11th counted from Gemini. Neither number is on the engine's list of 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, so Bhakoot gives the full 7 in every pairing. The list comes from two web references named in the engine's header; this library's books do not contain it.
Graha Maitri: an enemy on one side
The engine's friendship lists follow BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55. Mars has one natural enemy there, and it is Mercury. Mercury's lists contain neither Mars as friend nor as enemy, so it is neutral. A neutral-enemy pair is where the published references the engine consulted disagree, one giving 0.5 and another 1; the engine keeps its earlier value of 1. The Graha Maitri result is therefore 1 of 5, the lowest value this koota takes for any Aries Moon pair; Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius Moons get the same 1 with Aries.
Varna and the order of entry
Mesh is Kshatriya in the engine's Varna table; Mithun, as an air sign, takes the Shudra value. The engine gives the point when the first entry's value is at least the second's, so Aries first scores 0 and Gemini first scores 1. The header records this asymmetry as an unresolved question. The term is the koota's name only; it is not a statement about either person.
Vashya: one group apart
The Vashya koota places each Moon sign in a numbered group and scores 2 for the same group, 1 for neighbouring groups and 0.5 for anything further apart. The engine puts Aries in the group it shares with Taurus and Sagittarius, and Gemini in the next group, alongside Virgo, Libra and Aquarius. So the pair takes the middle value, 1 of 2. It is worth noticing that the grouping does not follow BPHS's quadruped-biped labels exactly; the engine table is the rule here, and it does not cite a book for it.
What the nakshatras decide for this pair
Two of the four nakshatra kootas do not move at all for Aries with Gemini. Tara is 1.5 in all 81 pairings: counting from one star to the other, one direction always lands on an unfavourable count and the other never does. Yoni is 2 throughout, because no Aries star shares an animal with a Gemini star and none of their animals are listed as enemies. That leaves Gana and Nadi to produce the whole 11-point spread.
The engine's Gana table makes Mrigashira and Punarvasu Deva and Ardra Manushya on the Gemini side, against Ashwini (Deva), Bharani (Manushya) and Krittika (Rakshasa) on the Aries side. A Krittika Moon with a Mrigashira or Punarvasu Moon is a Deva-Rakshasa pair and scores 0; Ashwini with either scores 6. The Nadi koota then adds 8 or nothing depending on whether the two stars share a Nadi group. These are technical labels; neither a Gana nor a Nadi describes a person.
Because those two kootas carry everything, the exact star matters more than usual. The nakshatra calculator finds it from a birth time; Moon sign and nakshatra explains why the two are separate.
Worked example: Aries 1 degree with Gemini 1 degree
At 1 degree of Aries the Moon is in Ashwini; at 1 degree of Gemini it is in Mrigashira, third pada. With Aries entered first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 0 | 1 | Sign: Kshatriya first, Shudra second |
| Vashya | 1 | 2 | Sign: adjacent groups |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: favourable one way |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Horse and Serpent |
| Graha Maitri | 1 | 5 | Sign: Mars-Mercury, enemy and neutral |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: Ashwini and Mrigashira both Deva |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | Sign: 3/11 distance |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Aadi and Madhya |
| Total | 26.5 | 36 |
This example happens to be the best case for the pair in the Aries-first order: Gana and Nadi both full, and nothing else able to move. It shows the structure plainly. The sign half gives 9; the two fixed nakshatra kootas give 3.5; Gana and Nadi give the other 14. A different star on either side could take those 14 down to 0 and the total to 12.5, though the engine's floor of 15.5 shows that no actual pairing loses both together.
Even at its best this is a description of two Moons, not of two people, and it is not a recommendation. Mars placement is examined separately in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not; the love compatibility calculator gives a lighter comparison that does not use kootas.
What the texts say about this pairing
The library's books supply the sign natures and the Mars-Mercury enmity; they do not supply Ashtakoot. BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology have no koota rules and no remark about Mesh with Mithun as partners. The scoring above is the engine's, with the web references for Bhakoot and Graha Maitri named in its code. Where those references disagreed, as they do on the neutral-enemy value that sets this pair's Graha Maitri, the engine kept its older number rather than choose.
Neighbouring pages: Aries and Taurus (2/12, Bhakoot 0), Aries and Cancer, and Gemini and Gemini.
- What is the Guna Milan range for Aries and Gemini Moons?
- From 15.5 to 26.5 out of 36 with Aries entered first, median 20.5; from 16.5 to 27.5, median 21.5, with Gemini first. These cover all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings.
- Why is Graha Maitri only 1?
- Mars lists Mercury as its natural enemy in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, while Mercury is neutral toward Mars. The engine scores a neutral-enemy pair 1 because its references disagree on the value.
- Why do Tara and Yoni never change for this pair?
- Across all 81 combinations of an Aries star with a Gemini star, Tara is favourable in exactly one direction (1.5) and the animals are neither the same nor enemies (2).
- How do I get our actual score?
- Gana and Nadi depend on the exact nakshatras, so you need birth details. The match tool computes all eight kootas.
- Is this score a verdict on the relationship?
- No. It is one traditional rule set applied to two Moon positions. This app offers no verdict on whether two people should marry.
