In short
An Aries Moon with a Taurus Moon scores between 11.5 and 22.5 out of 36 across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings when Aries is entered first (median 19.5), and one point more in every case when Taurus is entered first. Bhakoot is 0 because the signs are 2 and 12 apart, and Varna depends on the order of entry.
Aries and Taurus sit side by side in the zodiac, and in Guna Milan that adjacency is the most important fact about them. It costs the pair the whole Bhakoot koota. It is also the only cross-sign pair in the Aries series where the two signs share a Nakshatra: Krittika begins in Aries and finishes in Taurus. Both facts shape the numbers below, and a third, the order in which the two people are entered, shifts them by a point.
The signs are described on Aries, Mesha rashi and Taurus, Vrishabha rashi. The nakshatra matching hub explains the eight kootas once for all 78 sign pairs, and the Kundli matching calculator gives the real score for two charts.
Mesh and Vrishabh in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 treats the two signs as a contrast more than a match. Mesh (Sl. 6-7) is movable, fiery, bilious, ruled by Mangal (Mars) and "related to kings". Vrishabh (Sl. 8) is fixed, earthy, windy, ruled by Shukr (Venus), and "represents villages and businessmen". They do share one trait the engine cares about: the text calls both quadruped signs, and the engine's Vashya table puts them in the same group. Ch. 3 adds that the Moon is exalted in Vrishabh, a reminder that a Taurus Moon is, in classical terms, a well-placed one, though that dignity plays no part in the koota arithmetic.
An Aries Moon falls in Ashwini (4 padas), Bharani (4) or Krittika pada 1. A Taurus Moon falls in Krittika padas 2-4, Rohini (4) or Mrigashira padas 1-2. Nine quarters against nine gives 81 pairings.
The four kootas the sign pair fixes, and their score
The engine reads Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot from the Moon sign. With Aries entered first, all 81 pairings give:
| Koota | Out of | Reads | Aries first, Taurus second | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Sign | 0 (1 if Taurus is first) | The engine compares the first person's class value with the second's |
| Vashya | 2 | Sign | 2 | Both signs are in the same Vashya group |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Sign | 3 | Mars and Venus are neutral to each other |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Sign | 0 | Distance 2 one way, 12 the other |
| Tara | 3 | Nakshatra | 1.5 or 3 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Yoni | 4 | Nakshatra | 2 or 4 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Gana | 6 | Nakshatra | 0, 3 or 6 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Nadi | 8 | Nakshatra | 0 or 8 | Depends on the two birth stars |
So the signs lock in 5 of 15 points with Aries first, or 6 with Taurus first. Across the 81 pairings the total runs from 11.5 to 22.5 out of 36 (median 19.5) in the first order and from 12.5 to 23.5 (median 20.5) in the second. The best pairing of these two signs still sits well below the floor of a same-sign Aries match. Because Varna is the only koota that reacts to the order, the shift is exactly one point in every one of the 81 pairings, never more.
Bhakoot: why 2/12 scores nothing
Counting inclusively, Taurus is the 2nd sign from Aries and Aries is the 12th from Taurus. The engine's Bhakoot rule gives 0 for any 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 pair and 7 for everything else, so every Aries-Taurus pairing loses the full 7. The rule is taken from two web references named in the engine's header, because no book in this library states it. The 2/12 case was already 0 before the October 2026 change (which only added 5/9). Bhakoot dosha explains how the tradition talks about a 0 here.
Graha Maitri: two neutral lords
In the natural relationships of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, as the engine lists them, Mars's friends are the Sun, Moon and Jupiter and its only enemy is Mercury; Venus's friends are Mercury and Saturn and its enemies the Sun and Moon. Neither planet appears on the other's list, so each is neutral toward the other. The Graha Maitri table gives a neutral-neutral pair 3 of 5, a value the references agree on.
Varna: the order of entry changes the total
The engine's Varna table, built from BPHS Ch. 4, puts Mesh in the Kshatriya class and Vrishabh in the Vaishya class. It awards the point only when the first person's class value is greater than or equal to the second's, and that comparison is not symmetric. Aries first scores 0; Taurus first scores 1. The engine's own header lists this order dependence as unresolved. In practice it means the same couple can see a one-point difference depending on whose details went in first. The word Varna here names a koota and the classification BPHS gives the signs; it ranks no one.
The nakshatra kootas, and the shared star
Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi carry 21 points and account for the 11-point spread. The shared nakshatra is where this pair is unusual. A Moon in Krittika pada 1 (Aries) and one in Krittika pada 2, 3 or 4 (Taurus) are in the same star, so Yoni is 4 (Sheep with Sheep) and Gana is 6, but Nadi is 0. That is the source of the 4 in the Yoni column. Other Aries pairs reach Yoni 4 through different stars of the same animal (Aries-Aries, Aries-Cancer, Aries-Aquarius and Aries-Pisces), but this is the only cross-sign Aries pair where it comes from one shared star.
Elsewhere the Ganas pull in different directions. Ashwini is Deva, Bharani Manushya and Krittika Rakshasa on the Aries side; Rohini is Manushya and Mrigashira Deva on the Taurus side. An Ashwini Moon against a Krittika Moon therefore gives Gana 0, while Ashwini against Mrigashira gives 6. The labels are the system's technical terms, not character verdicts. Finding which star you were actually born under is the job of the nakshatra calculator.
Worked example: Aries 1 degree with Taurus 1 degree
The first Moon at 1 degree of Aries is in Ashwini. The second at 1 degree of Taurus is in Krittika, but in its second pada, so the two are in different stars. Entered Aries first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 0 | 1 | Sign: Kshatriya first, Vaishya second |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | Sign: same Vashya group |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: favourable one way only |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Horse and Sheep |
| Graha Maitri | 3 | 5 | Sign: Mars and Venus, neutral both ways |
| Gana | 0 | 6 | Nakshatra: Ashwini Deva, Krittika Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 2/12 distance |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Aadi and Antya |
| Total | 16.5 | 36 |
Of the 16.5, Nadi alone supplies 8, nearly half. Gana and Bhakoot both give 0, which is why the example sits three points under the 19.5 median. Move the Taurus Moon two degrees back to late Aries-side Krittika and it would no longer be a Taurus Moon at all, which is a small illustration of how much a birth time can matter near a sign boundary.
A score of 16.5 or 22.5 is a description of two Moon positions under one rule set, not a judgement on a relationship. Mars placement is a separate matter covered in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains why the star matters as much as the sign.
What the classical books in this library say
They describe the two signs and the two lords, and the engine uses those descriptions. They do not describe Ashtakoot. BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology contain no koota rule and no comment on Aries with Taurus as a match. Where this page gives a rule, it is the engine's, and the engine names its web sources.
Compare Aries and Aries, Taurus and Taurus and Aries and Gemini, which is one sign further on and keeps its Bhakoot.
- What do an Aries Moon and a Taurus Moon score in Guna Milan?
- From 11.5 to 22.5 out of 36 with Aries entered first (median 19.5), or 12.5 to 23.5 with Taurus first (median 20.5), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings.
- Why does the order matter for this pair?
- The engine scores Varna by comparing the first person's class value with the second's. Aries (Kshatriya) first against Taurus (Vaishya) scores 0; the other way scores 1. The engine flags this as an open question.
- Is Bhakoot always 0 for Aries and Taurus?
- Yes, in all 81 pairings. Adjacent signs are a 2/12 pair, which the engine scores 0 whatever the nakshatras.
- Can we both be in Krittika?
- Yes: Krittika pada 1 is in Aries and padas 2-4 are in Taurus. Then Yoni and Gana are full but Nadi is 0. The match tool shows your exact result from birth details.
- Does a low score rule out the match?
- This app gives no such verdict. The score applies one traditional rule set to two Moon positions, and the classical books in this library do not contain that rule set.
