In short
Two Aries Moons score between 26.5 and 31 out of 36 in this app's Ashtakoot engine, with a median of 28, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings. Every sign koota is full, so the 15 points from Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot are fixed; what varies is mainly Nadi, which is 0 whenever both Moons share a Nadi group.
When both people have the Moon in Aries, the sign half of Guna Milan has nothing left to decide. All four kootas that read the Moon sign come out at their maximum. That sounds like a strong start, and in this app's engine it is, but it also means every point of difference between two Aries-Moon couples sits in the nakshatras. This page sets out what is fixed, what is not, and why sharing a sign makes one particular koota more likely to come up empty.
For the sign itself, read Aries, Mesha rashi. The nakshatra matching hub explains all eight kootas and links the other 77 sign pairs, and the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts rather than a sign pair.
Mesh with Mesh: one sign, one lord
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 6-7 describes Mesh as a blood-red, quadruped sign that "denotes courage", fiery, strong at night, and ruled by Mangal (Mars). Sl. 5-5.5 places it first among the movable signs and among the bilious ones. Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 adds that the first 12 degrees of Mesh are Mars's moolatrikona. None of this is a matching rule, but it is the material the engine's tables are built from: the Varna class, the Vashya group and the sign lord all come out of this description.
An Aries Moon sits in one of nine nakshatra quarters: the four padas of Ashwini, the four of Bharani, and the first pada of Krittika. With both Moons in Aries, the 81 pairings are every one of those nine quarters set against every one of the same nine, including each quarter paired with itself.
The kootas this sign pair fixes: a full 15 of 15
KOOTA_DRIVER in the engine lists Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot as sign kootas. For two Aries Moons each one is at its ceiling in all 81 pairings:
| Koota | Out of | Reads | Aries with Aries | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Sign | 1 | Same sign, same class; the comparison is equal, so it scores |
| Vashya | 2 | Sign | 2 | Same Vashya group |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Sign | 5 | Both Moon signs ruled by Mars |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Sign | 7 | Distance 1 from each side: not a 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 pair |
| Tara | 3 | Nakshatra | 1.5 or 3 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Yoni | 4 | Nakshatra | 2 or 4 | Same animal gives 4 |
| Gana | 6 | Nakshatra | 0, 3 or 6 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Nadi | 8 | Nakshatra | 0 or 8 | Same Nadi group gives 0 |
Fifteen fixed points is the most any sign pair can lock in, and every same-sign pair gets them. The remaining 21 come from the nakshatras, and here they range far less than for most pairs: the total runs from 26.5 to 31 out of 36, with a median of 28. No pairing of two Aries Moons falls below 26.5 in this engine.
Graha Maitri when the lords are the same planet
The Graha Maitri koota normally asks how the two sign lords regard each other under the natural friendships of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55. When both lords are Mars there is no relationship to grade, and grahaMaitriPoints() returns the full 5 before it consults any friend list.
Bhakoot at distance one
The Bhakoot koota counts from one Moon sign to the other, inclusive. From Aries to Aries the count is 1 in both directions, which is not on the engine's 0-point list (2/12, 5/9, 6/8). That list itself comes from two published web references named in the engine's header, not from a book in this library; for this pair the references and older practice all agree, so the 7 is not contested.
Varna in either order
The engine scores Varna as 1 when the first person's class value is at least the second's. Two identical signs are always equal, so the order in which the two people are entered cannot change anything here, and the reverse-order run returns the same 26.5 / 28 / 31. Varna is used only as the koota's technical name; BPHS links Mesh to kings, and the engine reads that as a class value, nothing more.
What the nakshatras add, and why Nadi matters most here
With the sign kootas saturated, the 4.5-point spread between 26.5 and 31 is entirely Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi. The single largest lever is the Nadi koota: 8 points if the two birth stars fall in different Nadi groups and 0 if they share one. Two people born under the same nakshatra always share a Nadi, and with both Moons in a narrow 30-degree band that is far more likely than for a cross-sign pair. The engine's note on that result is mild: "traditionally flagged; worth discussing openly". The Nadi dosha page covers what the tradition says and what this app does with it.
The same closeness helps the other nakshatra kootas. Yoni scores 4 whenever both stars carry the same animal, and Gana scores 6 when they carry the same Gana. Ashwini is Deva in the engine's Gana table, Bharani Manushya and Krittika Rakshasa, so an Ashwini Moon with a Krittika Moon is where the Gana 0 in the table comes from. Gana names are technical labels in this system, not descriptions of anyone's character.
Because the Moon covers a nakshatra in roughly a day, birth time matters even inside one sign. Two people who both "have an Aries Moon" may sit in Ashwini and Bharani or both in Ashwini, and that difference alone can move Nadi between 0 and 8. The nakshatra calculator finds the exact star; Moon sign and nakshatra explains how the two layers relate.
Worked example: two Moons at Aries 1 degree
The engine-facts example puts both Moons at 1 degree of Aries, so both are in Ashwini. This is the extreme case of a same-sign match: same sign, same nakshatra, same quarter.
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: same class |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | Sign: same Vashya group |
| Tara | 3 | 3 | Nakshatra: a count of 1 is favourable both ways |
| Yoni | 4 | 4 | Nakshatra: Horse and Horse |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | Sign: Mars and Mars |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: both Deva |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | Sign: distance 1 |
| Nadi | 0 | 8 | Nakshatra: both Aadi Nadi |
| Total | 28 | 36 |
Seven of the eight kootas are full. The one that is not is Nadi, and it costs 8 points, which is exactly the gap between this example's 28 and a perfect 36. The example lands on the median for the pair. It also shows something worth knowing about same-nakshatra matches generally: the more alike the two Moons are, the more the score rewards it, until Nadi, which penalises it.
A number like 28 describes how two Moon positions meet a rule set. It is not a reading of either person, and this page does not say whether anyone should marry. Many families also check Mars placement separately; Mangal dosha: what it is and is not explains that check, which has nothing to do with the Moon sign being ruled by Mars.
What the texts say, and what they do not
BPHS supplies the sign descriptions and the planetary friendships the engine uses. It does not contain Ashtakoot. Neither does Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology in this app's library; a search for koota, kuta, bhakoot, nadi, gana and yoni finds no matching rule in any of them. So the classical record has nothing to say about two Aries Moons as a couple, and this page does not invent anything for it to say.
Nearby pairs show how quickly things change once the signs differ: Aries and Taurus loses Bhakoot entirely, while Aries and Leo keeps Graha Maitri but also loses Bhakoot. For a quick, non-Ashtakoot comparison there is also the love compatibility calculator.
- What is the Guna Milan score for two Aries Moons?
- Between 26.5 and 31 out of 36 in this app, with a median of 28, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings. The four sign kootas always contribute the full 15.
- Why is a same-sign match not a perfect 36?
- Because Nadi gives 0 when both birth stars share a Nadi group, and two Moons in the same sign often do. Tara, Yoni and Gana can also fall short depending on the stars.
- Does it matter who is entered first?
- Not for this pair. Varna can depend on order for some sign pairs, but two Aries Moons have the same class value, and the reverse-order run gives the same range.
- If we both have an Aries Moon, do we have Nadi dosha?
- Only if your two nakshatras fall in the same Nadi group, which a Moon sign alone cannot tell you. Enter both birth details in the match tool to see the actual result.
- Does a high score mean we should marry?
- This app does not give that verdict. The score is one traditional rule set applied to two Moon positions; the classical books in this library do not contain the system at all.
