In short
Ashtama Sani is the period when transiting Saturn is in the 8th sign from the natal Moon; Ardha Ashtama Sani is Saturn in the 4th. Both are named in Advanced Predictive Astrology, not in BPHS or Saravali. This app flags each by whole signs and describes it in practical terms, leaving out the source's bleaker examples.
What the term means
Ashtama Sani is the name for Saturn (Sani) transiting the 8th sign counted from the natal Moon sign. Its companion, Ardha Ashtama Sani, is Saturn in the 4th from the Moon. Both are Saturn transits, counted from the same point as Sade Sati but at different distances from it, and each lasts as long as Saturn stays in that one sign.
Where the term comes from
Neither name occurs in BPHS, Saravali or the Bhrigu Sutras in this site's corpus. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, in its chapter on transits) describes both directly after Sade Sati. It defines Ardha Ashtama Sani as Saturn in the 4th from the Moon and ties it to the 4th house, which "rules happiness of mind". It defines Ashtama Sani as Saturn's passage through the 8th from the natal Moon and quotes a harsh reading it attributes to Varahamihira, with a named person's death as an example. This app does not carry those examples over.
How this app computes it
- The engine counts the transiting Saturn sign from the natal Moon sign: a count of 4 is Ardha Ashtama Sani, a count of 8 is Ashtama Sani, anything else is inactive.
- The general transit reading agrees: Saturn in the 4th or the 8th from the Moon is marked testing, and the 4th row says it is also Ardha Ashtama Sani.
- The wording is practical and non-fatalistic by design; the engine's comment says it is reframed in the same tone as Sade Sati.
A small illustration
For a natal Moon in Sagittarius (the chart of 19 January 1985, New Delhi), Pisces is the 4th sign and Cancer the 8th. On 13 October 2026 the engine places Saturn in Pisces and returns Ardha Ashtama Sani as active, read as testing domestic peace and family matters and calling for patience at home "rather than signalling anything fixed or fated". Ashtama Sani proper would come when Saturn reaches Cancer.
